This is a remarkable book!
I borrowed this book from our local library, thinking it was just any other book. When I read the book, I enjoyed reading the adventures. Later on, I was surprised to discover that all the adventures were true. People could learn a lot from this book, not only about where the author lives but lessons in life, as well. After I returned the book, I decided to read it again, and this time, I borrowed both of the author's books. I've really enjoyed these books and think that children would benefit from reading these books, too. I hope that the author writes some more books about his memories.

Excellent book which will grab your heart and teach you.
As an elementary school teacher who loves children's literature, I try to read all the Bluebonnet books every year. This was one of the best. I really learned about life in a Vietnamese village from the perspective of a young boy. Even without learning this background, the book is a great story for all children and adults who love animals.

A pastoral memoir makes a powerful anti war statement
Before I read this book with my son I told him what I learned about Vietnam from growing up with the war on TV. The Vietnam of this story is not the same place. The author and his water buffalo, Tank, face many dangers together. Tank protects the herd and the village and his young master from dangers such as otters, crocodiles, wild boars and tigers. Only the last chapter mentions the human dangers we've come to associate with Vietnam, and it leaves the reader wishing that those dangers had never visited that country. I recommend this book to any of the now well over 30 generation who'd like to discuss the history they lived through with their children or grand children.

Product Description

As a young boy growing up in the hills of central Vietnam, Nhuong’s companion was Tank, the family water buffalo. When bullies harassed Nhuong, Tank sent them packing. When a wild tiger threatened the entire village, Tank defeated it. He led the herd and adopted a lonely puppy. Tank was Nhuong’s best friend.

Nhuong gives readers a glimpse of himself when he was their age, and tells a thrilling story of how he and Tank together faced the dangers of life in the Vietnamese jungle which was their home.

local yet global
Christianity in this country won't always be (well, it isn't now!) First Church on the corner of Main and Elm, housed in an iconic white colonial or colonial reproduction building, pews lined up facing the chancel that features a communion table topped with brass candlesticks donated by Annie and Henry's grandparents, Tiffany-type stained glass, Strawberry Shortcake Socials and picnics on a grassy lawn...Water Buffalo Theology is liberation theology, ecological theology, theology of the cross and an offering in the Christian-Buddhist dialogue. By definition Christianity is incarnational, so cautioning every one of us in our attempts to reach others author Kosuke Koyama asks, "How can anyone be a teacher of religion unless he is at home with the language of the people?" and in the course of the book contrasts and compares many aspects of Buddhism and Christianity. Koyama challenges us to tough anthropological cross-cultural work of living with and living as the other in...

A GREAT BOOK !!
Ken Babbs is a fascinating guy, one of the true Pioneers of the Psychedelic Sixties, who has written a surprisingly wonderful book based on his experiences flying big Marine helicopters early in the Vietnam War. Ken brings it all to life in this joyous, frightening, hilarious, hideous, rollicking account. Start reading it and you won't put it down until it's shocking conclusion! Well recommended.

A "Rookie Author" At 75 - It Was Worth The Wait
Since its first public mention in the pages of Tom Wolfe's "The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test" (a type-written manuscript in a cardboard box "lying there amid all the general debris and madness" in the garage where the Merry Pranksters and Ken Kesey were working on the Furthur bus), the world has been waiting for Ken Babbs' debut novel.Set in the early days of the Vietnam War - when the United States was there simply to, uh, "provide support" - "Who Shot The Water Buffalo?" combines humor, drama, and the sort of wordplay you'd expect from the Intrepid Traveler himself. Babbs knows of what he writes - he piloted choppers in Vietnam before he got on the bus - and it shows. The narration morphs and shifts as the weirdness of the situation increases for Majors Mike Huckelbee and Tom Cochran; Babbs navigates sweat-soaked stream-of-consciousness raps as easily as he does passages of gonzo slapstick. It's been close to 50 years since Babbs starting typing "Who Shot The...

Product Description

Ken Babbs was the last member of the legendary Stanford writing class led by Wallace Stegner to publish a novel, and the wait was worth it. Lieutenants Tom Huckelbee ("leathery as any Texican come crawling out of the sage") and Mike Cochran ("loquacious son of an Ohio gangster") make an unlikely pair of of?cers training to be helicopter pilots in Vietnam. Their only aim is to get through this disorienting war without losing their minds. This is a bullet-straight story, a hallucinatory journey with a fearlessly unconventional voice. Babbs brilliantly portrays the world through the eyes of a young man discovering what it means to be beholden to another.

This novel, acclaimed as "a cross between Joseph Heller and Hunter S. Thompson" (Booklist), is a riveting and very funny exploration of war and friendship, and a book not to be missed.

An enlightening read for Vietnam-era enthusiasts
Nearly 50 years after the infamous Vietnam War, Ken Babbs has written WHO SHOT THE WATER BUFFALO?, his novel about helicopter pilots in that conflict. A writing class contemporary of Ken Kesey, Larry McMurtry and Robert Stone, Babbs is the last of that group to have his book published. According to author Tom Wolfe, Babbs stored the pages in a cardboard box on his garage floor. Himself a USMC helicopter pilot who served in Vietnam, Babbs writes his main character, Major Tom Hucklebee, as "leathery as any Texican come crawling out of the sage." His counterpart, Major Mike Cochran, is a "Loquacious, Ohio gangster." Together they train to become Marine chopper pilots.Hucklebee narrates the story, beginning each chapter with psychedelic ramblings in conversation to a doctor. In pain, he recalls details from the beginning of flight school as a junior Marine officer, where he trains with Cochran. Hucklebee stems from a long line of Army veterans, while Cochran gets himself...

An intriguing and fascinating read that should not be missed
Some wounds never heal. "Cry for the Water Buffalo" tells the story of how some Vietnamese are still torn apart by that war three or four decades ago, which split a people against itself. James N. Zitzelberger tells a story of one of these families who struggle to cope with their pasts. "Cry for the Water Buffalo" is an intriguing and fascinating read that should not be missed.

Product Description

A Vietnamese family is decimated by the war around them and a sniper caught up in the military machine. Children, parents, politicians and soldiers are shaped by the war, driven by it, and, worst of all, never freed from it. CRY FOR THE WATER BUFFALO is reminiscent of the U.S. Civil War when families were divided by ideology, allegiance and necessity. This is a work of contemporary historical fiction that moves from the fighting of the Vietnam War into the lives of todays still struggling immigrants and soldiers who share the persistent and often unrecognized residuals of PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). Haunting! Jim Zitzelsberger served two tours of duty in Vietnam with Naval Mobil Construction Battalion (MCB) 128 stationed at Da Nang and Quang Tri during the pivotal years of 1967, 68, and 69. At that time there were at least a dozen strong, burly men present, but their hearts were softened by the buffalo’s crying, and those who were responsible for killing water buffaloes were even more touched by this, tears welling out of their eyes. When this decision was made, an amazing thing happened again: “When there was an assurance that the buffalo would not be killed, it finally agreed to move, got up, and it’s here with us. ” How could a water buffalo understand human word. At the point when a buffalo is crying and people are crying as well, we can all be sure that none of them will kill the buffalo now. Finally, they decided to buy the water buffalo with cash, and then they sent it to a Buddhist temple, for the monastic to take good care of it, so that it could be assured of living out its life peacefully. We pushed and pulled the water buffalo, but it would not move. ” Billy Fong, the boss of the Hong Kong packaging plant said, “ Mankind has always thought that animals are not like people who can cry, but this buffalo is really sobbing like a baby. When workers from other slaughterhouses heard the news, they also ran to the crying and kneeling buffalo, and the site was soon crowded with people who were astonished at what they saw.  Three of them were so shocked that they said that from now on, even when they slaughter other kinds of animals, they will never forget that buffalo’s tears. How could the buffalo have already been aware that it was going to be slaughtered, before entering the slaughterhouse.
