It's Good!
Eddie Murphy stars as Jim Evers, one half of Evers and Evers Real Estate. At Evers and Evers, they want to keep you happy for evers and evers. But Jim's addiction to his work is starting to affect his relationships at home. Even his wife and business partner, Sara Evers, is losing patience with him. When a couple of new customers cause Jim to miss an anniversary date with his wife, that's the last straw. He has to promise a full, family weekend at the lake to make up for it. So Jim, Sara, and their preteen kids, Megan and Michael, are all set for a fun little vacation when the phone rings at the last minute. It's just a quick little stop off at the Gracey Manor in New Orleans, what's the worst that could happen? The owners want to sell. Too many...bad memories. But in no time, the family finds they must stay the night as a sudden rainstorm has flooded the road. The wife and kids aren't thrilled, the creepy butler Ramsley and the suspicious staff were enough to put them...

Pirates of the Carribean this is not
While not in league with Pirates of the Carribean (POTC), this movie was still entertaining in its own right.Scary? Well, not really. They are a big fan of having things jump out and try to get you jumping yourself... but all these parts were rather predictable. But, my son enjoyed the thrill factor of this movie. I've always shied from him watching scary movies, but I felt okay about bringing him to this one.Funny? Well, Eddie Murphy is always funny. He is just a funny guy and a fun guy to watch on the screen. He did seem to be coasting through most of this movie, but he becomes to this movie what Johnny Depp was to POTC.Story line? Pretty simple, but this is more a movie for kids so simple was in what was called or. My son really enjoyed it. But how they beat the bad guy... just not too dramatic or outstanding of an ending to this movie.Special Effects? Fantastic!! Flawless! The ghosts were well done as well as the magic crystal ball.Recommended? For the...

This Will Be a Favorite of Cat Lovers and Ghost Story Aficionados
A really good, clever mystery, written for the young adult audience, but as a very senior adult I enjoyed this book tremendously. It caught me up in the story right from the first page and I kept right on reading right to the very satisfactory conclusion.

Product Description

Are Shadow, the grinning black cat, and Annabelle Coffinfinder, guardian of the crystal chandelier, the only lingering spirits in Mansion House, or are there more? When Kati Danson discovers her power of clairaudience, she decides to find out.

****

Kati Danson’s family spends every summer at Piney Lake, Michigan, but her parents have divorced, and her father is staying in their cabin with his new family. The only place available is a three-story house that belonged to Mr. Coffinfinder, a recluse who recently died. Due to a belief it’s haunted, the house is for sale, cheap, and Kati’s mom wants to turn it into a bed and breakfast. Fifteen-year-old Kati doesn’t want to live at Piney Lake year around, and she’s sure she’ll be a social outcast living in “weird Coffy’s house.”

Kati doesn’t believe in ghosts but strange things happen, and for some reason, they’re stranger for her than other people. When a crystal falls from the chandelier, others hear a ping and Kati hears a crash, and when a black cat and an old-fashioned doll talk to her and she can converse with them, she thinks she’s going crazy. However, when Zack, a super-cute boy who’s interested in the occult, moves into the B&B with his dad, he tells her she must be clairaudient—able to hear sounds others can’t, and he thinks she might be able to contact his mother who died under mysterious circumstances.

a good read, a true haunting
I purchased this book about 20 years ago, and have reread it a few times over the years, each time thinking it just as good. The events are told matter of factly and sound very plausible. But it also reads like a novel, meaning that the writing is good. Most "true haunting" stories today are very poorly written and edited, and/or they go into demonistic extremes. This is just a classic haunted house, fascinating, a bit spooky, something you'd like to read about on a windy night but not necessarily live with. I didn't even know this was back in print and came across it on Amazon looking up another ghost story, and thought I'd give it the "Recommended" that is its due. Well written, well edited, and a good haunting story. Wish there were more like it around to buy.

Fantastic. A 'must read'
This is one of my all time favourite books. It's one of those books that you can't put down until the end. I find most 'true' ghost stories seem to be almost over written, to the point that they become cheesey and unbelievable. This one is done matter of factly and is about day to day life in a historic and very haunted old house. I am looking forward to the movie!

    A Good Read for Halloween
At Halloween, I like to venture from my normal reading and choose something a little more in season. I am no aficionado of the "horror" genre, but allegedly-true tales of the paranormal are more my style. I chose "Night Stalks the Mansion" by Constance Westbie and Harold Cameron for this year's Halloween Book because it was a well-known classic and because the story took place in the western suburbs of Philadelphia -- the neighborhood that I call home. I bought it yesterday morning, started reading it after lunch, and I didn't put it down until it was finished. Of course, it is not a particularly hefty volume, but y'all will just have to take my word for it that my focusing on a single endeavor for a whole afternoon is a rare event. What was particularly compelling to me about the house on Plum Lane was how completely believable the story was. These ghosts (or whatever) turn out to be annoying to the Cameron family more than malevolent, although their very presence freaks...

    Magic Mansion
This book is a huge pleasure to read for so many reasons. First, it's long. We're talking days of escapism. With this book, you can draw it out as a reward for doing your day-to-day life while looking forward to reading the next chapter at night before bed.Second, it doesn't drag anywhere and a LOT happens. So you look down at your Kindle, fearing you might be more than halfway through and realize to your delight that you're only 23% done.Third, the supporting characters are an absolute delight. No one lavishes such care and complexity on supporting characters quite like Jordan does. My personal faves here are probably the Math Wizard (modest, yet dazzlingly competent), and Jia (flinty no-nonsense integrity). But I'm fascinated by Kevin for his gangsta-speak, loathsomeness, and ability to generate huge, nail-biting tension. And who could forget Francis (aka "Foxy") who was so memorable in his small scene?Fourth, the reality show concept is...

    Magic Mansion Wins! :-D
I love this from first chapter to the last. I read it first in the serial format on JCP's newsletter. The magic, is as always with her writing, in the characters! They are fearless, daring, courageous, cunning! I think you'll like it too! This book can be defined as Character Driven or be the definition.

Now this is the reality TV I would happily watch :)
I think the mandatory preamble I feel compelled to make lately to all my reviews about the books by this writer would still hold here. This writer has fantastic imagination. In this book she puts her own twist upon reality TV shows. I got tired of multiple reality shows very fast especially when it was clear and very fast that there is very little "reality" in those shows. I confess to still watching some cooking shows though ;). But JCP again does something amazing here. She picks amazingly fun topic to play out in the show. I dont know about you, but I love magic tricks, although if you think that all that those magicians do are "tricks", boy are you in for a surprise. I had to reread it couple of times when she introduced that surprise first and it made everything so much more interesting to me. She put in truly diverse cast of characters, she showed just enough recognisable "stagedness" and "fakedness", but also showed some very fun challenges, which made interactions between the...

    Product Description

It’s back to Corduroy Mansions—the slightly dilapidated but well-lived-in mansion block in London’s hip Pimlico neighborhood—for the third installment in Alexander McCall Smith’s latest beloved series.

It seems the universe itself is conspiring against the residents of Corduroy Mansions, as they all find themselves struggling with their nearest and dearest. Oedipus Snark’s mother, Berthea, is still at work on her scathing biography of her son—the only loathsome Liberal Democrat Member of Parliament; literary agents Rupert Porter and Barbara Ragg are still battling each other for first crack at the manuscript of Autobiography of a Yeti; fine arts graduate Caroline Jarvis is busy exploring the blurry line between friendship and romance; and William French is still worrying that his son, Eddie, may never leave home, even though Eddie’s got a new wealthy girlfriend. But uppermost in everyone’s mind is William’s faithful terrier, Freddie de la Hay—without a doubt the only dog clever enough to have been recruited by MI6—who has disappeared while on a mystery tour around the Suffolk countryside. Will Freddie find his way back to Pimlico? Is Corduroy Mansions starting to crumble?

Readers will be captivated once again by McCall Smith’s genius for storytelling, his insight into his beautifully crafted characters and his eye for the quirky details of modern life.

Smith Administers his Special Brand of Gentle Humor
Breaking news, Alexander McCall Smith fans: The master of the novella has broken his own mold --- he's written a spy novel! We were first introduced to our four-legged hero, Freddie de la Hay, in last year's CORDUROY MANSIONS. Adventure seems to go looking for Freddie, a former drug-sniffing Pimlico terrier for the Crown, who has found peaceful retirement with William French, a modestly successful wine merchant in London. William is a widower lamenting his current bachelorhood and contemplating a future that is, at the moment, devoid of female companionship. The few women who have ventured into his life have found him somewhat stuffy or too fussy and have drifted away. When an attractive and vaguely familiar middle-aged woman rings his doorbell, he is delighted and invites her in for tea. She once owned a bookstore near his wine shop when he was still married, and as they renew their acquaintance, she lets it drop that she is now single, out of the book business...

a tender sequel to Corduroy Mansions
The Dog Who Came In from the Cold continues the tale Alexander McCall Smith began in Corduroy Mansions, examining the intertwined lives of several residents of a Pimlico apartment block. William is still looking for love, Caroline is still looking for love (and not quite finding it with James), Dee is looking to make money, Rupert and Gloria are looking to appropriate Barbara's flat, and the yeti has arrived in London, hoping to publish his life's story while avoiding being cornered in Fortnum and Mason's. The most surprising twist is Freddie de la Hay's recruitment by MI6, for the purpose of eavesdropping on a Russian spy ring. The stories are gentle and sweet but profoundly moving in their very ordinariness--when Martin stakes his tiny life savings on a speculative business venture, when Caroline learns something unexpected about her mother, when Freddie is at last reunited with William. A theme of resilience, of the importance of rising to unexpected circumstances, runs through...

    Product Description

The second installment in Alexander McCall Smith’s newest beloved series follows the further adventures of Freddie de la Hay, Pimlico terrier, and the wonderfully motley crew of his fellow residents in the elegantly crumbling London mansion block, Corduroy Mansions.

A pair of New Age operators has determined that Terence Moongrove’s estate is the ideal location for their Centre for Cosmological Studies. Literary agent Barbara Ragg has decided to represent a man who is writing a book about his time “hanging out” with the abominable snowman. And our small, furry, endlessly surprising canine hero, Freddie de la Hay, has been recruited by MI6 to infiltrate a Russian spy ring. Needless to say, the other denizens of Corduroy Mansions have issues of their own. But all of them will be addressed with the wit, charm, and insight into the foibles of the human condition that have become the hallmark of this truly peerless storyteller.

    lighthearted satirical romp
In Pimlico, London wine merchant William French is shocked when an old acquaintance Angelica Brockelbank, whom he has not seen in years, arrives at his home Corduroy Mansions. She shocks him further when she explains she no longer manages a bookstore, but instead works for MI6. Her colleague needs a recruit to spy on the Russian spy ring. However, they just want French to escort his terrier, Freddie de la Hay to and from the job.Other residents of Corduroy Mansions are dealing with issues too. New Age gurus believe that the estate of Terence Moongrove is the cosmological center. Literary agent Barbara Ragg is pushing publication of her book Autobiography of a Yeti that she insists was told to her by the title character. The latest Corduroy Mansions satire is a lighthearted romp that lampoons the memoir/biography book publishing, skewers the homeland security espionage agents, and mocks the New Age crowd who has been around long enough to become the Old New...

I think there was drama with them at first, but I think MTV also counted on the family drama, which WAS entertaining… I mean Butch is a jailbird who is not only Tyler’s Dad, but is also Cate’s step dad… Plus Cate’s Mom is a bit of a loose cannon…... Just like you’d expect, they didn’t get a tiny house, but it also wasn’t some super huge mini-mansion. I always love seeing updates on Cate and Ty. They’re wise kids and I only want the best for them, since they gave Carly such a wonderful life and sacrificed so much for that to happen. keep up the good work talking to the young people, about being a teen Mom and Dad. This isn’t a knock on them at all, they’re far and away the best role models for young teens, but they don’t seem to fit on MTV’s drama-first programming.   The young couple remained as close as ever, and any long-time Teen Mom viewer you talk to couldn’t be happier for them.   It’s a modest sized house that looks absolutely beautiful inside, and the pair look happy as ever to be proud new homeowners.   Then you have Catelynn and Tyler, the most mature and responsible teens I’ve probably ever seen, let alone on TV with 6 figure checks thrown at them. So happy to see one of the girls(couples) on the original Teen Mom doing smart things with the MILLION DOLLARS they accrued in four seasons of the show.   Just kidding, this is Cate and Tyler we’re talking about. I wish Cate and Tyler every good thing.
