A Cruiser's Engine Atlas
This book provides the reader with a broad overview of most of the basic problems that can occur and offers simple solutions. I have recommended/loaned my copy of this book to several Diesel sailboat owners. The all remarked on how simple their repair was according to the book and how it save them $$. I do find the book is a little lacking in coverage of large powerboat diesels, but the concepts seem applicable.

Detailed and well written
I bought this in conjunction with Peter Compton's book. I like booth. Calder is more detailed and more informative, but I find Compton easier to understand and more direct. If I have an engine problem I might start with Compton's book to narrow the possibilites down and Calder's book for detailed explanation. This book is somewhat redundant with Calder's "Boatowner's Mechanical and Electrical Manual" which is definitely a must have. Overall, great book and well worth the money. Would I buy again? Definitely

Seloc Yanmar manual
This is a well written manual that, for non-professionals, I would highly recommend over the "official" Yanmar shop manual (thought it doesn't hurt to have both). The Seloc manual is much easier to follow, the tasks are laid out in a 1-2-3 step by step format, and it is well illustrated, and comprehensive.

A thourough guide but missing an engine!
This was a very complete and thourough guide to the GM series as well as the 4JH and 4JH Turbo models. The book is easy to read yet detailed enough for the serious mechanic/machinist. My only negative comment is that the manual over looked the 3JH series completely. I believe this oversight should be corrected in future versions.

This book rocks!
I already had the expensive Yanmar service manual specifically for the 2QM20 Yanmar diesel that I own - but it wasnt nearly concise enough in MANY areas ...but thank goodness this book by Seloc MORE than surpassed my expectations and it was worth every -penny! If you own a marine Yanmar engine that fits the 75' to 98' slot ...BUY this book....you will be glad you did!

Worth waiting for!
When you are looking for a simple explanation to a complicated set of directions you usually ask a friend, not in this case, just look at the book. I found Peter Compton's book a very helpful and interesting guide to trouble shooting your way out of a frustrating situation. I am teaching marine engineers and running courses for weekend sailors and would have no hesitation in urging them to buy a copy for their book shelf. The diagrams are first class and I use the book as an example to my students. Well done Peter for giving me the tools to make the job easier.

Without the book we would not have found the problem...
Last Friday evening I gave your book to a friend as a gift. The next day we all went out on their boat to enjoy the Fleet Week festivities. About 1 mile offshore the engine just quit, no warning just quit running. The first thing we did was to drop the hook, the second was to get your book out.We went down the trouble shooting tree, checking each item and following the Yes-No flow. Well, 45 minutes later we had the engine running. The beauty of it was that without the book we would have NOT found the problem. (The problem was in the fuel return line) Without the book we would never had thought to check there for the problem.Needless to say my friends just LOVE your book.

Understanding the marine diesel engine cooling system is a necessary part of marine diesel engine maintenance. The primary advantage of a flexible impeller pump is that it is self-priming, which means that when the vanes of the impeller are depressed and rebound, they create their own vacuum, drawing fluid into the pump. The capsule on the lower part of the thermostat has a mixture of wax and copper (to increase the thermal conductivity) sealed in it. As the coolant temperature increases, the wax expands and forces a rod to open the poppet valve at the top of the... Flexible impeller pumps provide an efficient solution to most raw water pumping needs. The pump impeller is made of neoprene rubber and this can be damaged in the case of water deficiency if, for example, the sea-water intake should be blocked. For circulation of the internal, closed, fresh water circuit of the cooling system it is common to use a flexible rubber pump if it is located on the cold side of the system (max. An added feature of a flexible impeller pump is that it can pass fairly large solids without clogging or damaging the pump. To test your thermostat, boil a pot of water and drop in the thermostat. Thus a flexible impeller pump being used for engine cooling does not need to be manually primed or located below the water line. This is true for both raw water as well as fresh water handling systems. If the thermostat doesn't work, do not remove it and run the engine without it, as the engine will run cold and tight. Thermostats are usually placed in the outlet at the top of the cylinder head to prevent the coolant from moving to the header tank until the marine engine has nearly reached operating temperature. The required output of the cooling pump is related to engine type and size, not to the size of the heat exchanger and exhaust system. Yanmar thermostats can and should be regularly serviced.
