Great read, great advice
If you are new to motorcycling, back to motorcycling, or new to traveling by motorcycle, I highly recommend this book. As a guy that has covered many miles and camped off my bike many times, this was a great read. A reminder for me to GO SMALL, which is a chronic problem I have.Yes, my name is CLAY, and I'm an over-packer. This book reminded me how to do it right, and how to do it cheap. Yes, you can do both. Thank you Mr. Pain!

Great book, to the point without any fluff. Buy it if considering bike travel
In an age where economy has become so important in our lives and many people cant afford the adventurous life they desire, Andrew pain has laid out a well thought out introduction to affordable motorcycle adventure and travelI would like to see a little more about the maintenance and repair aspect of travel but people probably need to learn that for them selves anyways. This is otherwise the perfect booklet for anybody considering motorcycle travel for the first time or considering stretching out a little further than they have experienced. It is well written with no fluff and give the reader a good outline of what is needed, what is not, and what they can do with it.This book should serve as an essential first step for anybody considering motorcycle travel, cost efficient adventure or just stepping out further than they have before on their existing bikes. It also serves as an excellent review for those who have traveled by bike already as it offer well...

The Master Speaks
Don't know Fred? What rock have you been living under? He's the excellent MCN columnist and the last word on motorcycle touring. This fine, beautifully produced book proves his skills. If you don't read, study and absorb this book and Rau's condensed wisdom of decades and hundreds of thousands of touring miles, and have problems on your next ride, don't come whining to me. He has seen it all, from sublime to obscene.Rau defines touring, establishes priorities, helps you avoid problems and plan your tour, suggests packing, picking the right gear and accessorizing your machine, identifies the pitfalls that await you, and pinpoints miscellaneous essentials. He uses many photos to illustrate the multi-faceted aspects of touring and to identify specific bikes to choose, across the full spectrum of available machines. One point he emphasizes, neglected by too many manufacturers: range. He nails Harley-Davidson to the wall on this issue.Rau's writing style...

Product Description

Touring on a motorcycle has never been more popular than it is today, but with more and more people hitting the open road, a growing number are doing so without the proper skills and information they need to survive the ordeal. Far too often the trip of a lifetime turns into an unmitigated disaster, leading to expensive breakdowns, arrests, lost wages, broken limbs, death, and even, on more than one occasion, divorce. Most people who travel aboard motorcycles have learned these lessons the hard way, if they’ve survived long enough, but now readers of the Motorcycle Touring Bible can learn an easier way; they can learn from author Fred Rau’s mistakes rather than through the school of hard knocks.

Motorcycle road trip NOT just for motorcycles...
Billed as a "motorcycle touring" book, this is much more. It is a good book about road trips in the Northwest - mostly off-freeway. Good for any-one on any-number of wheels.I was on a two-week motorcycle ride up the north side of the Columbia River to the Canadian border. In Kennewick Washington I accidentally left the taillight of my Triumph cruiser on overnight, and the battery was dead the next morning. A young woman offered to jump-start my bike, and introduced herself as "a travel writer." She and a co-author had just published a book about bike tours in the NW.OK,. I'll check it out. After all she did me a favor. For fifty years I've ridden all over the US and elsewhere and once only carried a tour book, "Road Trip USA" pressed upon me by a friend I visited. Good book except big! Perhaps four times bigger than the book I'm describing. (For a serious motorcyclist, big ain't better, especially regarding those two-wheel cars sometimes even...

perfect gift for your motorcycle riding Dad
Bought this as a gift for my Dad, ended up reading it myself. Always love exploring the Northwest Coast and this book just added to my excitement of it. Great side notes about restaurants, beach stops, and a details about each location. Directions to waterfall stops along the Columbia River and what to see along the Cascades. It even hits on the San Juan Islands! SO much to see in the Northwest and this book touches on it all. I feel like planning a little get a way and I don't even ride....but I'm thinking that may be a fun way to check out this area.

Product Description

The popularity of motorcycle tour riding is increasing steadily, but riders taking off on extended trips must realize there are unique hazards they can face when riding without support far from home. This book is a comprehensive "how-to-tour" guide that includes information on how to plan, what to pack, how to make emergency roadside motorcycle repairs, how to develop a "personal safety net" for when things go wrong, and how best to avoid having things go wrong.

Author Dr. Gregory W. Frazier is the world’s best-known touring rider and is the rider best qualified to cover topics such as: where to go and why, whether to go alone or with someone, equipment preparation, where to sleep, physical hazards, motorcycle gadgets, stretching your dollars, and more. He also offers first-hand tips on "survival on the road." Top to learn more

Certainly not Everything You Need to Know
I agree with A. Brannon "MLC Rider" to a lot of fluff and not enought subtance. The book is mostly Doc Frazier's travelog. I was looking for information on how to travel, with what and how to do it safely. This book is certainly not Everything You Need to Know.I think the better book is:by Dale Coyner

Light but interesting
I enjoyed reading the first half of this book but then found it very repititous. There were some good common sense tips that you would apply to travelling the world by any mode not just motorcycling. His stories and anecdotes were interesting at first but it soon became obvious that the book was well padded with fluff and photos.

Customer Review

Excellent for new travelers, and a good review for the experienced folks
I have been riding motorcycles since 1995. During that time I've taken several trips, from 1 day jaunts around the Chesapeake Bay to journeys of 2 weeks. During these trips I made some mistakes, and learned some new ways of doing things to make the next trip better. I've also received a lot of advice (mostly good) from people, either in person, or from various internet groups and e-mail lists. A lot of the information that I learned, to make motorcycle travel easier and more fun is in Dale Coyner's book. He starts with the very basics. Where are you going, and how will you be getting there? How should you plan your route? Then goes into how to prepare your motorcycle (no matter what type of motorcycle you ride), and how to prepare yourself, both mentally and physically. Then, before it's actually time to go, what do you need to do, so that when you go, you'll be able to go with no worries.Reading this book is like sitting down with a group of experienced...

This is the book I wish I'd had when I started touring.
Imagine that you are in your late 30s, you've never owned a motorcycle in your life, and you want to begin motorcycle touring. Where would you begin to find out? That is the dilemma that I had when I first got into the sport, eleven years and 100,000 miles ago. Mostly, I got information from word of mouth, members of our local BMW club, and blind experimentation.Someone starting out today, however, would not have as hard a time getting started because of Dale Conyer's wonderful new book, the Essential Guide to Motorcycle Travel, Tips, Technology, Advanced Techniques. What I found was a veritable encyclopedia of information that is just as valuable to this experienced learner as it would have been to my newbie self a decade ago.The book is organized into sections entitled: Planning your trip Preparing yourselfOutfitting your bikeOn the roadThe section on planning your trip lays out all of the essential questions that must...

A treasure for the motorcycle traveller!
For anyone seeking information about motorcycle travel, this is THE book to have! Dale does a great job of covering many aspects (dare I say All?) for traveling by motorcycle, and then some. Everything from weatherproof riding gear, GPS, suspension, campers, tents, seat cushions to suggestions for wiring new equipment into your bike can be found in this comprehensive guide. The book is loaded with full color photos. I've been riding a number of years now, and thought I'd kept up on the latest gear and travel info... until I read this book. I've learned a few things and found a few new gadgets to look into. Highly recommended for someone just beginning to travel my motorcycle, or the seasoned rider.

Planning to ride in the Southwest? Buy this book!
My wife and I recently purchased and read several books on motorcycle touring in the Southwest. We're planning a 14 day trip in May to Arizona through Utah. Of the three books we bought, "Motorcyle Touring in the Southwest: The Region's Greatest Rides" (MTSW) was the only one we consider worthy of adding weight to our already overloaded "on the road" gear. Since we'll be riding (not trailering) from northern Washington state we're only going to bring the things we absotutely need. THIS IS ONE OF THEM!The text reads like it was written by motorcyclists for motorcyclists. We definitely connected with them via their descriptions of the road and the journey. We pictured ourselves enjoying the rides as much as they did when they wrote the book. Sadly, the other books seemed well written, but by authors who traveled in rental cars and finished the writing from an office somewhere in New York City. They just did not capture the spirit of the open road the way that MTSW...

What this change in management will bring to the Ducati brand will remain to be seen, and we are curious about how Audi’s influence will impact the design and performance of future Ducati motorcycles. Audi will buy Italian motorcycle maker Ducati for €860 million ($1. The deal will aid Germany-based Audi to better compete with the BMW AG, which already has a strong foot-hold in the motorcycle market with both their BMW and Husqvarna line-ups.

To me, the accuracy absolutely does lie in the middle, as any motorcycle can be an ideal touring bike-your ideal touring bike. Plus, two will charge to booty alert as abundant stuff, so add some bigger blazon of motorcycle attache to your ideal touring motorcycle. Some motorcycle riders accept to accept a abounding allowance and a windshield, while others assert aloft a face abounding of authentic air hitting a their helmet at 80 afar per hour, no allowance and covering saddlebags captivation a change of... For me, I've had at atomic three ideal touring bikes-motorcycles that I put a lot of afar on through the years. If you go the distance, bigger accomplish a acceptable benumbed aspect a antecedence for your touring motorcycle. Now, that was a abundant touring bike-as continued as you didnt charge to see how fast you were going, as that accompanying the British agent vibrated so heavily at acceleration. As I discovered, absolutely accessible motorcycles (after those fairings or windshields) can be afflicted in complete air-conditioned or wet weather. I consistently rode alone, but if you ride in tandem, you will charge a motorcycle with some ability. This can be a touring bike as well, but apparently is not one that calmly comes to mind. What do you anticipate abundant makes a touring bike. But, it looked great, was handled with reliable, actual able-bodied and abundant touring was amotorcycle to me. Now, your turn.
