Major knife in a slim package
I'm a multitool person and generally consider a folding knife as a waste of space, until I see this one.The good:1) Very light. At 2.3 Oz this is probably the lightest folder with 3 1/8" blade. It's the single most important feature for me who wear slacks instead of jeans at work.2) Slim profile. Without the clip it's only 3/8", and with clip it's a little over 1/2". It doesn't create a visible bulge.3) G10 scales. G10 is a modern fiberglass that's both very light and tough it's practically indestructible. The particular scales here have non-slip surface that feels like coarse fabric, good to keep the knife in your hand when wet.4) Flipper. With little practice you can very quickly deploy the blade with just your index finger. The flipper also serves as finger guard preventing the blade from accidentally closing on you.5) Liner lock. It obviously keeps the blade in open position (very solid), but a bump on the lock also mates with a hole on...

Excellent pocket knife
I was looking for a small, secure assisted knife for pocket carry, and almost bought the Kershaw Leek -- a very popular knife -- for that purpose (I may still buy the Leek.)I am partial to Kershaw; they seem to try hard to give you extra value and workmanship for your money and their designs are solid. The Kershaw Blur, which I own and love, is a larger assisted folder that opens lightning fast and is an excellent value, but is more knife than I want to carry everyday, it's more for fending off ravaging grizzly bears and bill collectors.I generally prefer assisted opening knives, I don't care for flippers. And at first I thought I had made a mistake here. It would open and lock some of the time, but I couldn't get a consistent lock. However, when I got a torx wrench and slightly loosened the pivot screw (don't overdo this, just a little was needed on my knife), it suddenly transformed into a solid performer. The blade shape is perfect, like a leaf, not the...

A sleeper. Great quality for the price for right-handed use.
Wow. There are a lot of knife enthusiasts on Amazon. Some excellent, in-depth reviews here.I'll try to keep mine short, and to the point. If you're used to a quality blade, you'll be happy with this one.If you're used to $10 knives, you'll be amazed at the difference.I needed this for a "work-horse" of an EDC, which will get some actual use, and abuse. As such, I wanted to keep the price down, but the quality reasonably good.Bingo. Found it.EXCELLENT steel. Trim and light carry. Lawful but FAST one-handed deployment."Fit and Finish" is just outstanding for such a humble little utility tool.Rub your hand along the back of the blade. The edges are totally smoothed and rounded.Go around the whole exterior of the knife. Same thing. Every exposed edge is FINISHED in some way.Rounded, smoothed, the edges of the scales are beveled, even the edges of the protruding "Flipper"...

Should you upgrade from iPad 2? (updated with Verizon snafu)
This review is for iPad 2 owners trying to decide whether to upgrade. It also might be helpful for people deciding between buying a "new iPad" and an iPad 2 (which is now just 399, 100 bucks cheaper than the cheapest "new iPad").I was perfectly happy with my iPad 2, a wifi-only model with 32gb. When Apple announced the new iPad, I typed up a long list of reasons why I shouldn't buy it. And then I bought one anyway. (I'll be giving my iPad 2 to my parents.)You've probably already read up on the new iPad and know the list of new features it has, and how the specs compare to the iPad 2's specs. But comparing specs on paper is different than comparing the actual experience of using the two products, and the experience matters more than the specs. I can tell you which of those features, at least to me, really makes the experience of using the new iPad better. And there's only one: the display.I do a lot of reading on the iPad, and this is where...

Predictably Remarkable. The best tablet in its 10" class, but still no 7" version!
I was able to secure the new iPad at our local Apple store this morning, as ours wasn't too busy, but I also got to spend a little time with a review model beforehand. In any case, I'll take you hands-on with the new model, plus I'll share my experience from my past two years of iPad ownership altogether, especially for those who haven't yet had an iPad to call their own. I'll also reveal a treasure trove of info on how you can legitimately download tons of quality apps and games for free, in hopes of making this the most helpful iPad review on Amazon! My review tends to run long, so I've organized information by section, with headings, to make it more helpful for those just looking for specific info. For example, see the heading "Downloading Apps and Games" for the info on obtaining free apps and games!First, let's quickly cover what's new, and what each means for you:+ Retina Display - twice the resolution of the iPad 2, at 2048 x 1536 pixels...

Good, but ...
I've been a big iPad fan and was waiting anxiously for the third generation to come out. I bought the original iPad, and when the 2 came out, I happily sold the 1 and upgraded. I was thrilled with the thinner, lighter and improved iPad 2. So naturally, when word came out that the third one was about to be released in March 2012, I was right on board to buy one. Sold my 2 and preordered the 3 from Apple the day it was released.I was hoping the third gen wouldn't be noticibly thicker and heavier than the 2, but unfortunately it was. I could definitely tell the difference when reading ebooks, which I do a lot. I couldn't really tell any difference between the speed and clarity of the 3, but to be fair, I didn't compare the two models side by side. I've no doubt the 3 is superior in this regard. I don't use the cameras, so don't care about this since I have a very nice digital camera for that. The one thing about the third generation iPad that really...

High Quality, Very Quiet. Wireless receiver is TINY!
I am very impressed with this product. I have used many, many keyboards and wireless mice over the years and this keyboard / mouse combo really are excellent. They both look and feel high quality with a soft rubberized coating on the mouse and the keyboard wrist wrest.I have been using a Microsoft Natural keyboard 4000 for the ergonomics and convenience buttons. This Logitech keyboard is MUCH, MUCH quieter and the spacebar is much easier to press. In addition, I think that the convenience buttons (like the volume control, media center launcher, etc) are much easier to see and use on this Logitech Keyboard than the Microsoft Natural keyboard. I will say that I occasionally thought that I noticed a bit of a delay with the keys I typed not showing up on the screen instantly. I'm not sure if I can blame that on the keyboard or not, but whatever the case it wasn't something that caused me enough of a problem to knock a star off the rating. Since I'm now using this keyboard...

Comfortable with just the right spring to the keys
This keyboard and mouse were drop dead easy to setup and use. Pull the sticker off the USB transmitter and plug it in to a USB slot. Pull out the tab keeping the battery from making contact on the bottom of the keyboard and the bottom of the mouse and you are up and running. I didn't even both with unplugging the wired keyboard and mouse. I'm using a Lenovo W500 Thinkpad running Windows XP and everything worked without a hitch. I had expected to have to install a driver or something but nope. How does it work? I have not detected any kind of lag from either the keyboard nor the mouse. The mouse moves smoothly over my desktop and is contoured to fit my somewhat largish hands (large for a woman - about the size of an average to small man's hand). The wheel works fine in scrolling the windows up and down and I like the forward and back buttons on the side of the mouse. The groove where your thumb rests is lined with a nonslip padding. If you are left handed, you can...

Best for office workers and/or those who do a LOT of writing. [Plus a comparison with the half-priced MK320]
This is certainly a well made unit, and its ergonomic "wave" form really is pleasant when doing hours of writing, as is its rubbery, vaguely faux-leather rest for the heel of the hands. Having also just got the new Logitceh MK 320, I'd have to say it delivers very similar quality in most ways to this, and is probably a better wireless value for the average user. If you write all day, however, the MK 550 might have your name on it.Like the 320, this is a breeze to set up: pull out the tabs under the pre-installed batteries, plug in the (super small) usb wireless receiver, and off you go. That's nice. (The included cd is for customizing some of the function keys and won't be used by many is my guess.)The first thing you notice about this keyboard is how large it is, almost 50% bigger than the average wireless kb. Most of that room is used by the palm rest. If I was a perfect touch typist, this might be the ultimate kb; it seems to be designed with the pro typist...

Very Interesting
Perhaps a little to dry for someone not totally engaged in the subject matter, but overall this book is extremely interesting and full of helpfull information to anyone interested in urban design, the cities of New York or Chicago, or architecture.

Product Description

Although fundamental factors of program, technology, and economics make tall buildings everywhere take similar forms, skyscrapers in New York and Chicago developed very differently in the first half of the twentieth century. In contrast to standard histories that counterpose the design philosophies of the Chicago and New York "schools," Willis shows how market formulas produced characteristic forms in each city"vernaculars of capitalism"that resulted from local land-use patterns, municipal codes, and zoning. Refuting some common clichs of skyscraper history such as the equation of big buildings with big business and the idea of a "corporate skyline," Willis emphasizes the importance of speculative development and the impact of real-estate cycles on the forms of buildings and on their spatial distribution.

Form Follows Finance cautions that the city must be understood as a complex commercial environment where buildings are themselves businesses, space is a commodity, and location and image have value. Top to learn more

The central theme of this well researched history of architecture, urban planning, and real estate is that in the design of office buildings, form, space, and money are all intricately bound up with one another. This convincing hypothesis is presented in the form of a comprehensive and comparative look at the skylines of two major turn-of-the-century cities, which are also two of the most illustrious American metropolises: Chicago and New York. What differentiates this book from other histories of the skyscraper is its emphasis on economics as the chief factor in the determination of form, as well as on municipal codes, land-use patterns, and zoning. It is also an urban history and an agile investigation into the forces that shaped the tallest buildings in America. It is fascinating to learn, for instance, how new formal solutions for office buildings emerged, exactly how the height of the Empire State Building was determined, and how economics contributed to the vast majority of these and other design decisions. In Contrast: Chicago and New York
This book is great and well written...This book gives a comprehensive look at the developement of the skyscraper between the two major cities that shaped the world of high-rise architecture. Each chapter provides a detailed look of the different factors and events that led to the design of skyscrapers that gave the amazing profile of Chicago and New York as we see it today. This book is a must for architects, architectural historians, preservationist!
