Great designed saw
The DeWalt saw is designed and manufactured by Sommervile Design in Canada. They make the Excaliber Scroll saw. The Dewalt Saw is very much like the excaliber in that it has very low vibration and having a very smooth operation. I had a dewalt but had to move up to the excaliber because of the work i produced, unless you use a scroll saw for 6 - 12 hours per day, buy this saw. The only problem I had was the motor could not take the beating i gave it, i cut 3/4 to 1 1/2 thickness wood all the time, althought the saw handled that thickness with ease, it could not keep my pace. If your a hobbiest cutting moderately its a GREAT saw. It has a quick release for the blade and you can change blades in seconds, the blade tension is right there in front, the top arm lifts for getting work on and off the table. Fairly quiet operation. Don't waste your money on the light, its not bright at all and does not help. Assembly is a snap upon getting the saw, just put the table on and your...

Great Saw, Great Price
I scroll saw wooden trivets from 3/4" red oak. In 2000 I made almost 1,000. I spend a lot of time at my saw. All of the cuts I make are inside cuts so ease of blade changing is very important. I have owned a Hegner and two Excaliburs before buying the DeWalt in December 1999. The DeWalt costs 1/3 what the Hegner and Excalibur cost. Hegner is by far the hardest of the three brands to change blades and customer support is poor. DeWalt worked with Somerville Designs (the maker of the Excalibur) to design the DeWalt saw. The Excaliburs I have, one 20" and one 30" saw were good but required routine oiling replacement of the many sleeve bearings. Customer support through Seyco was excellant. When the Excaliburs were getting to the point that repairs were going to cost what a new DeWalt cost I decided to try the DeWalt. I have found the saw to be every bit as good as the Excalibur. All of the sleeve bearings in the Excalibur have been replaced with roller bearings which do...

Unique Arm Design for Accurate Cuts
A scroll saw needs to perform both reliably and accurately, whether you're crafting custom jigsaw puzzles or designing unique trim pieces. This DEWALT scroll saw's double parallel-link arm design helps it deliver on both fronts by reducing vibration. The specially designed arm pivots from the back of the saw to the front, shortening the distance that the arm needs to move and allowing for smoother, quieter saw operation. With less vibration, you can produce accurate cuts with ease.

This unique arm design also works to keep the saw's blade perpendicular to whatever you're working on, reducing the chance of over cutting or under cutting.

Easy to Handle with Variable-Speed Control
Adding to the saw's intuitive, design are convenient controls engineered by DEWALT to keep your workflow smooth. The saw's on-off switch, speed control, and blade-tensioning lever are all located within easy reach on the front, upper arm. The saw's flexible dust blower is also located on this portion of the arm so it can easily be directed where you need it, keeping your work surface clear of unwanted debris.

The scroll saw's electronic variable-speed control allows you to make quick, accurate adjustments and utilize speeds ranging from 400 to 1,750 strokes per minute. The saw relies on a dependable 1.3 Amp motor for the power you need and delivers a variable stroke length between 3/4 inch and up to 2 inches deep. This application-specific performance translates to improved control and cleaner results.

Save Time with Tool-Free Blade Changes and Adjustable Table
Whether you're working with a variety of specialty materials or you're simply ready for a more aggressive cut, the DEWALT exclusive, tool-free blade clamps allow you to complete blade changes in just seconds. And the arm is easy to lift, making it easy to thread the blade through materials when making inside cuts.

Weighing 56 pounds, this scroll saw has a heavy-duty feel yet is small enough to move around the shop easily. The saw's oversized, cast-iron table provides excellent support no matter what you're working on, and the table bevels 45 degrees to the left and 45 degrees to the right for added versatility.

This 20-inch variable-speed scroll saw comes with a DEWALT warranty package that includes a three-year limited warranty, a one-year free service contract, and a 90-day money-back guarantee.

Customer Review

Good saw , good service, good price .
As usual Amazon shipping could not have been better. Product was as described only better the product description failed to note that cutting depths longer than 16" can be made by turning the blade perpendicular to the arm. Once I disconnected all of the "OSHA" safety trash* and the non-functioning dust blower and threw it all away it was almost ready to go. I built a wooden base for it and padded it with some rubber shelf liner material and locked it down in my "Workmate 225". Some vibration is apparent at 1500 spm but that is to be expected. Speeds somewhere in the mid range works good for 1/4" to 3/4" pine and 1/2 birch plywood. The speed control helps for tight inside cuts.*Removing the cover on the right side makes blade changes mush easier. Hope this helps.

Great Value!
The Shop Fox scroll saw came double-boxed, so there was no damage in shipping. I bought this saw because of the price and because it has a cast iron table, instead of aluminum. Also, it uses blades with or without pins. I have had absolutely no problems with it. I was surprised that it even came with a light bulb.

lessons for beginning scroll saw artists
The book is a good tool for me - I'm a raw beginner with my scroll saw. The exercises are valuable confidence builders. I actually did some of them several times. Now I can tackle even a sharp corner with some confidence. The book introduces different thicknesses of wood and goes into metal and other materials. Once you have worked your way through, you can produce complex pieces with good results.

Must-Have for Scrollers
This book is like having an experienced scroller in your shop, looking over your shoulder telling you step-by-step how to get great results from your scroll saw. He is patient, he explains everything in very easy English, and the practice lessons are fun to do! You can proceed at your own pace, and learn to do some realy terrific projects. The only (slight) negative I have about this book is that John takes the somewhat elitist view that if you have a pin-end blade-only saw, you need a better saw before you start scrolling. As a financially-challenged scroller, I can assure you that almost all the exercises can be done with some level of success with a pin-end blade inserted in an economy saw. John is, of course, right - that it is all easier and better with a good saw and plain-end blades. Even with that teensy negative, I gave this book 5 stars for the excellence and clarity of the exercises. As for it not lying flat on the workbench, you can photocopy the patterns, and most...

Supportive book for beginners
I am a beginner with a scroll saw and was very pleased to find Mr. Nelson's workbook. Although I have not yet begun the exercises (I intend to start this weekend), I have read all the chapters and am very excited. He starts out with just the basics (following lines and making turns) and works on up including stack cutting and creating a cute fish puzzle. Each lesson teaches you something new and in practicing the lesson you produce a finished project. I definately recommend this book.

This Scroll Saw Works Great!
This Scroll Saw Works Great!I bought this item from CPO Outlets on Ebay instead of Amazon because at the time it was a little cheaper, but not currently. I very nearly did not purchase it after reading A. Szabo's very critical review here on Amazon. The part that scared me was about a "burned out motor"; however, after considering he had put those words near the middle of his review instead of at the beginning or as a concluding ending (it would have certainly topped my list as the main problem, if it was true), I thought, that is weird, almost like it was a passing idea rather than a fact. So looking at the alarming part within the entire context,"Bought this item advertised as new, received a used piece of junk. Filthy full of saw dust and a burned out motor, now its my problem to get it returned,"it seemed to me that his main issue was that he was expecting new but got refurbished and that in his eyes the motor was probably burned out, although not...

Product Description

This is the ideal machine for that delicate project: model building, toy manufacturing and precision work. It cuts soft wood (e.g. bass wood) up to 1 3/16" (30 mm), hard wood up to approx. 25/64" (10 mm), plastic (including circuit boards) up to approx. 5/32" (4 mm) and non-ferrous metals up to 5/64" (2 mm) with standard scroll saw blades. The machine has a very stable ribbed die-cast aluminum saw frame with 11 13/16" (300 mm) throat. The blade guide is equipped with an integrated blower. The patented head-part is height-adjustable in 3 positions and offers numerous advantages: The lifetime of the saw blade is tripled after shortening it twice (teeth in the middle part of the saw blade are finally used, too). With the head in the lowest position, working with a blade shortened to 2 23/64" is even more precise. The machined worktable of die-cast aluminum has a size of 6 19/64" x 6 19/64" (160 x 160 mm) and is equipped with an adjustable longitudinal stop and graduated miter gauge (0-90°). The ABS plastic body provides a very practical sliding door on the right side of the housing for the removal of saw dust. The saw is powered by a 110 - 120V motor (85 W) for prolonged use, low noise performance and even supported by a quiet and wear-resistant toothed belt drive, running in a ball bearing assembly. The machine offers an electronically controllable stroke rate from approx. 150 - 2,500 strokes/min. Top to learn more

Nice for hobbyists
I ordered the Proxxon scroll saw for light cutting and hobbyist work and Amazon had the cheapest price I could find. It's extremely light, small, and makes the noise level is extremely low - all three are important for me because I live in a cramped apartment. It includes speed control and accepts common scroll saw blade heights, and adjusts for larger and shorter blades. It's easy to operate, one button for on and off and a knob for speed control - however, I recommend purchasing a foot pedal to control the scroll saw as pressing the power button repeatedly while in the middle of working on a project can become irritating and it offers more control.I should stress that the Proxxon scroll saw is meant for light projects, it cuts soft woods easily, and thin hard woods but don't expect it to slice through 2 inches of plywood. Actually, don't expect it to cut through plywood at all. It slices through balsa like butter, but even extremely thin slices of...

Limited purpose, but useful for model making
If you have a large garage with room for a real table saw, a band saw, a jointer... I envy you. If you have a closet-sized "workshop" where the best you can hope for is to build boats to fit in a bottle, then maybe this scroll saw will help you with your projects. You would think that a tool this small would find its place in jewelry making. It doesn't. It is nearly useless for cutting through metal. It cuts through seashells, ivory, plastic and thin softwood nicely. So the possible applications are fairly limited. It is basically a model maker's tool. Especially useful when you are working in wood, plastic and very thin metals. Not recomended for heavier work.

Proxxon DS 115/E Scroll Saw
The Proxxon scroll saw is a wonderful tool for detailed work on jewelry and other physically small projects. I use it to initially shape wax forms to be cast. It does a great job. With the blade cut to the shortest length, it can be precisely controlled.I agree with a previous reviewer that cited the extremely poor instructions.Blade changing is a bit unorthodox but with practice it's passable. It's very important to install the blade so that it makes contact with roller guide. Also, as recommended in the instructions, cutting the blade to shortest possible length greatly improves accuracy. The blades are easily cut to size with normal medium-duty wire cutters.I was surprised to find that the unit included crosscut and rip guides. These have proven to be very useful assets. The saw is very well made for a relatively inexpensive item. If you are doing model level work, I highly recommend this saw. However, if you are into...

BUY Proxxon 37088 DS 115/E Scroll Saw

Buy Scroll Saw

I don't have any specific recommendations other than to get one with a fence, however I ran across the below review for a Delta BS100 it contains a great deal of usable info that I suspect applies to most if not all of the bench top saws and even... Before you buy any bandsaw, go through either of these two books and learn how to set up a band saw properly, including using the mitre gauge and setting the saw up for perfect mitre cuts and how to rip and resaw. I have a 14 inch Grizzly G0555X which I love but it sounds like you are looking for a decent 9"-10" bench top saw, Hrawd is right their footprint is less than/equal to a scroll saw. 3) Tune the saw when you have a high quality blade and coolblocks for your saw. 1) Throw away the blade that came with the saw, and buy a high quality blade e. g. Timberwolf from Suffolk Machinery. Using the original blade or Delta's own blade or any other "regular" blades found in ordinary hardware stores WILL be a disappointment on this saw. If you decide to buy this saw, buy one or the other of the recommended books mentioned as well. Saw will run smoother, quieter and have more of its power available for sawing after the tuning. This will also help you realize that straight cuts, resawing etc does require certain techniques whether you have a 9" Delta or a 36" RotoMatic industrial band saw with 2" blade.
