Great resource!
I really enjoyed this book!We have a new Russian Tortoise and needed a beginner's guide of how to house, feed and care for our tortoise. The pictures are wonderful in the book and the author took the time to point out different thoughts, controversial ways and the "why's" of caring for your tortoise when it's not in its natural habitat. I would recommend this book to those wanting to know more about their new pet. My children enjoyed the pictures and the chapters are thorough, yet not exhaustive. For the family needing more than what the pet store gives you, this book is the perfect solution.

Poignant and wise, recommended
Experienced and acclaimed poet Gardner McFall brings readers another collection of poetry with "Russian Tortoise", a collection of poems expressing her emotions and opinions on the world around her and everything about it. "Russian Tortoise" is a collection that is poignant and wise, recommended. "Lesson": Everyone's enrolled in the school of loss,/the instruments of study, heart, and mind,/applied to life experience. Me? I've been/a student a long time; I'm taking too long/ to graduate. How cross my accomplished principal/has grown, weary of making me write/"Nothing gold can stay" as many times as it takes./Pages accrue on my desk in the waning sun./When she dismisses me, my cramped hand aches./I almost believe repetition has driven/the lesson home, till outside under the stars/and the moon's two profiled faces locked/in a white, new kiss, a reasonable mind is/helpless to tamp the heart's rich howl.

Product Description

The poems in Gardner McFall's second volume address questions of death, faith, and love. As in her first book, The Pilot's Daughter, McFall investigates and responds to the natural world with her finely tuned senses. Her deepened sense of time and mortality is reflected in the poems about her mother s death, her journey to Vietnam forty years after her father's service there, and her exploration of love and family. Russian Tortoise celebrates beauty and mystery, whether in an Audubon plate, a tortoise her daughter brings home from school, or a man shouting "Alleluia" on the street. Top to learn more

On second thought
I thought this book would be more detailed in scope than it was. In fact, I think the website http://www.russiantortoise.org/ is in some ways more informative than this book. I would still recommend purchasing it if you want to absorb as many viewpoints as you can. I feel the author was writing a primer, and not an extensive book on the subject of tortoises. This would be an excellent book for the newbie to tortoises, but for one who has cruised the internet on the tortoises, it may be a disappointment, but it is still worth owning.

If you want to do multiple pics in a single post, resize the pics so that they are less than or equal to 128 KB in total. I bought a russian tortoise at my local mom and pop petstore.   The russian didnt have his eyes open and looked very lethargic. On the left side of the page, under "Modify Profile", click "Forum Profile Information".   I asked the employee what was wrong with it, she didnt seem to know, and said she would keep an eye on it.   He retracted into his shell when she picked him up, but didnt open his eyes. You should now always see your pic in the upper left corner of whatever page youre on while in the forum (and itll show up under your name in threads and posts).   Does anyone have experience with a Russian that wont open his eyes.   There were five tortoises in the forty gallon tank with almost no substrate, a small water dish, and a food dish filled with some kind of greenish slaw.   Im considering going back to buy this tort and save him from these poor conditions on Saturday 2/25.

I had her in the tub because I wasn't sure how my cat would react to her. The cat's actually scared of her.
