Good Beginner book
I found the book very useful and easy to read. There was just enough technical information in the text to be informative without being overwhelming. I did order the Kindle edition of the book and unfortunately many of the example photos were missing (some were included, but not all). So several of the examples in the book would refer to a picture that was missing. These missing picture are what lead me to rate the book a 4 star instead of 5.

I have enjoyed photography as a hobby for 50+years. I own a Canon 20D and am a Scott Kelby fan. He is a great photoshop expert, yet emphasizes the importance of getting the best possible shot when taking the picture, to make your time in photoshop more enjoyable. You don't have to work as hard if you make the correct exposure to begin with.Scott approaches each chapter with some humor, and really understands what you really need is a clear bottom line on how to approach the person or subject you want to photograph.I received my book Sept 4th, read it and used some of his tips shooting 500+ volleyball pictures Sept 5th. This is the most practical and useful book on digital photography that you will find on the shelves. A Good Book That Begins Beyond the Basics
Since I'm offering an opinion (and review) on the book, The Digital Photography Book, I think a brief look at my background may give what follows a bit more veracity. I am an enthusiastic advanced amateur photographer with roughly 40 years of experience that includes a goodly number of awards and published photos. I like taking pictures, but take mostly pictures of the family. However, I can well imagine expanding the horizons a bit. I think this book in a very very simple way explains how to take better pictures. And the best part is that the author shows how, without having to buy much equipment. Very good guide for budget photography
Steve Johnson knows his stuff, and he shares it well in this collection of columns on low-budget photography. He is so right about the basic concept: Photography does not need to be a costly hobby. The modern point-and-shoot digital camera does an incredible job in the hands of a creative shooter. Steve shows how to expand those capabilities with low or no cost tools.

A book that will connect the photographer to his/her photograph
For someone who had no previous formal education in art of any sort including photography, this is the best book I came across. I was looking for a book that is not too advanced to understand about artistic compositions, but not too shallow that it simply tell you to apply "higher contrast is better", "the rule of the third", "the golden ratio" etc. without enough explanation. I actually came across some books like that which left me even more confused about compositions. Most of the time, I just blindly apply whatever I learned of composition.But this book is totally different. It starts talking about the philosophy of how photography is connected personally to the photographer. Then it gives a detail analysis of all the elements of composition with great examples and with a language that even an amateur can understand. An Unneeded Update
Here's a case where Amazon's star rating sytem doesn't work very well. As described below, for a very small number of photographers this book will prove useful. For the vast majority of photographers it will not.I've long been an admirer of the work of Bruce Barnbaum. An original Barnbaum print hangs on my wall. A copy of his book of photographs, "Visual Symphony" graces my coffee table. Several years ago I purchased a used copy of the original, but then out of print, "The Art of Photography" at an outrageous price. I have to confess that much of the book was unread because it dealt with film photography, and I had long since made the switch to digital.Now "The Art of Photography" has been reissued in a revised form, supposedly updated for the digital age. Expansive theory, dated craft
Books about photography can be placed across a very wide spectrum. Some focus almost entirely on the mechanics of capturing and producing images in a pleasing but essentially documentary fashion. Excellent photography book for beginners
BetterPhoto Basics by Jim Miotke is an excellent resource for those just delving into digital photography. Unlike many other "beginner" books, Miotke doesn't spend page after page on techniques or explanations, instead keeping his descriptions short and to the point. My students find this book to be a great beginner's book, helping them go on to the more advanced books by Kelby, Evening, and others.Full-color throughout, Miotke's book will take you from "Don't Get Too Close" to what lens compression is and how it affects your images. He explains why you should or would need a tripod, when to turn on the flash, what focal length is, composition, framing, and more. For a beginner, this is the book I would recommend to get you started. If you have a good grasp of the basics, this is NOT the book for you.

Helpful, easy to use book for any photographer who wants to improve their skills.
I really appreciate this book! I have been taking photos for several years but desire to improve my photography skills. Jim Miotke does a wonderful job of introducing his readers to the many features of today's digital cameras. The 40 tips for better photos and 20 assignments are very helpful for beginning and experienced photographers. I am working through the assignments with friends which provides an even better learning experience as we discuss our photos. I recommend this book highly!
