Great book from an author who knows her stuff!

Wonderful book to keep my orchids alive!
A few months back I signed up for Berdak's "Orchid Insider Club" and when she sent out a newsletter letting everyone know about this book, I definitely wanted to check it out. Like everything else I've read from her, this is top notch. I'm fairly new to orchid growing (only 12 plants in my collection) so this gave me few tips that were new to me. The best part is the cheat sheet at the end with all her orchid advice in one spot. Thanks for keeping my orchids alive and beautiful Mary Ann!

Momet Plus moisture meter - works
I purchased this gadget about a year ago. For an "all in one" unit it works well and simple to use. Reads moisture levels of my orchid mediums well. As a beginner I was using it all the time and it helped me to understand when to water and how much. I don't use the moisture meter as much anymore. I still use the MOMETplus for light, temperature and humidity though. I like that it remembers min/max temperature and humidity levels.If there was one thing to improve, it would be the light meter. I believe each light bar is about 250-350 foot candles with 10 bars total, maximum at around 3500 foot candles (I don't remember exactly). For some, the visual presentation is enough, but I would prefer more precise, numerical display.

It is not uncommon that a new batch of flowers grow out from the stalk or if you are lucky you might end up with a Keiki, a new baby orchid that you will be able to plant in a separate pot once it has grown a little bit. It is in other words not natural for the orchid to have the leaf rosette facing upwards like they do when we keep them as potted plants. Once you have discovered that Phalaenopsis orchids are easy to care for there are plenty of other easy orchids for you to try such as Mokara and Paphiopedilum orchids. These orchids will do well without any extra nutrient but will grow faster and flower more if they are given orchid fertilizer or well diluted regular flower fertilizer about once a month during the growth period. If you want your plant to flower year around you will need to leave them in a bright spot year round. This is a mistake, not only because the orchid can be flowering again in a few months but also because the orchids will grow more and more flowers as they get older. Phalaenopsis orchids are among the easiest of all orchids to care for and it is not hard to make them flower again and again. Put a little water on the tray and let the planting medium soak it up. It is good if the medium is moist but not wet. A final tip to get your Phalaenopsis orchids to re-flower is to not remove the entire flower stalk once they have finished flowering. A well cared for Phalaenopsis orchid will flower almost nonstop and can have tens of flowers at the same time. Despite this there is a lot of people who think they are unable to get the orchids to flower again and therefore throw them away once they are done flowering.

Most orchid beginners think orchids need a lot of water, subscribing to the premise that since orchids are jungle plants, they must love to be soaked in water. We repotted our whole collection of Phalaenopsis orchids into clay pots that have hand-drilled holes that provide better aeration for the plant. For every 10 Phalaenopsis plants you buy today, nine of them will be potted up in Sphagnum moss. And maybe you are well aware of your bad history of killing every Phalaenopsis you buy from Trader Joe’s, but you are determined this time to keep your precious plant alive. Bark retains less water, which means you have to water it more frequently, but it will give your plant plenty of air and a better chance of surviving. Sphagnum moss is great for orchids, but it doesn’t give beginners the leeway they need to get a feel for managing the wetness levels of their new plants. If you do decide to convert your Phalaenopsis to bark, water the plant itself before leaves start losing some stiffness. The moss simply retains too much water for the plant to survive. Terra cotta pots also dry out a bit quicker than the typical plastic that orchids comes in. So just because it is an orchid, doesn’t mean it loves to soak in water.
