Fun and Educational!
Affordable, fun science experiment that I had a great time doing again as an adult. The process /is/ tedious, and takes a lot of patience, but it's worth it. It's harder than you'd think to be able to put together a whole creature, but the amount and quality of other small bones was good. Many were highly fragile, but still the right size and durability for art projects, accessory decorating, and other activities.I'm bleaching my bones in hydrogen peroxide, but the worn grey look is really neat too!

Neat little kit...
however, it didn't come with the magnifying glass as it was supposed to, but that wasn't why I bought this kit.My daughter did an owl pellet in a science center class I'd enrolled her in years ago. She didn't remember the class well and wanted to dissect another owl pellet.I found this kit - it came with 3 pellets (all sterilized) 2 probes, a small pamphlet/booklet about owls and what they eat and a chart of skeletons of their favored food. The chart was hard to read - tiny and very thin, faint lines. We were grateful to be able to get owl pellets again, but if you're relying on this to be an entire lesson, this wouldn't be for you unless you're willing to dig around on line and supplement this kit with a better bone chart, and whatever information on the animals you wish to add.For us, this served it's purpose because we've covered this already and we did a little extra research on line to add to this kit - It made for a nice refresher.

Who woulda' thought
Great teaching tool. Kids loved it and I'll order more for next years agenda. Really easily identifiable bones and other matter and not near as yucky as I thought it would be.

Educational and fun
My boys had a great time dissecting these owl pellets. We downloaded a paper on the bones so we were able to identify most of the bones we found. It was highly educational and led to further discussion on owls, predators, prey and digestion. EXCELLENT.

Grades 3-5. Here's real-life learning! Students can learn about food chains/webs, owls, and more through the investigation of owl pellets. Set includes five professionally treated owl pellets sealed in aluminum foil and then placed in a heated sealed poly bag. Top to learn more

Educational and fun
This package comes with 5 owl pellets, approximately 1 1/2" long. As the other reviewer mentioned, they are just wrapped in foil and sent in an ordinary manila padded envelope without any directions. I was able to find instructional videos and directions by doing a search online and even a bone identification chart, which helped my kids (ages 9 and 6) identify their findings. Basically, you carefully pull apart the pellets on a piece of white paper and very gently pull out the bones, teeth, etc. with your fingers or tweezers. Our pellets contained many bones and several skulls, much to the kids' delight. Our bone chart led us to believe that our owls consumed shrews. This project is a good lesson in patience; it kept us entertained for about 30 minutes. They got to keep their "findings" in a plastic baggie. Be sure to wash hands thoroughly after handling the pellets.

Fun and educational.
Seven year old boy did these in school and was so excited by it that we gave as present. He and his grandfather spent two hours doing these. Good quality. Of course, needs adult supervision with dissection tools. (not provided with product)

Customer Review

awesome!
Bought this as a stocking stuffer for my husband, who loves all things nature. He LOVED it and had a blast. Lots of little bones and fluffs of fur! Husband says that its best to use great care when excavating through the bones because they're very fragile. He ditched the sticks the kit comes with after fracturing the shrew skull and switched to his own tweezers instead. Despite the gruesome act of digging animal remains out of owl puke, there really was no ick factor. It's all dry and tidily packed in a ball.

Owl pellets
Owl pellet was okay. We did get a skull, so that was good. The sticks they include with the product not very helpful. This product would be better with a good bone chart.

Phenomenally gross! But great hands-on science. Dissect this sanitary owl pellet which contains the skeletal remains of an owl meal. Learn about the owl's habitat, place in the food chain, and predatory skills. Use some archaeological skills to piece together the skeletons using the bone chart. Top to learn more

Great price and lots of specimens
I use these in my 6th grade science class. Each pellet usually contains 3 animals, sometimes you get as many as 5 skulls out of 1 pellet. Always shipped quickly and packaged professionally. These prices are the best deal for this quantity. I continue to buy these each year from the same seller for my classroom.
