Product Description

Oud, Egyptian Deluxe with Nylon Gig Bag. This oud has the classic tear-drop shape. The bowl and neck stave construction is accented with alternating dark and light hard woods. The three round sound holes have decorative rosette inserts (rosette and pick guard designs vary) and are trimmed with faux mother of pearl inlay. The soundboard has a light finish. There are twelve strings in six courses of two each. The bridge is fixed. The nut to bridge measures approximately 23.25 inches. This is a beautiful instrument. Over all dimensions are approximately 32 x 14 x 8 inches. Includes nylon gig bag with pick. SPECIAL NOTE: No Warranty on Strings: Whether you purchase an instrument on-line or in a neighborhood store, manufacturers recommend that you change the strings on your instrument as soon as you receive it. Your instrument has completed a long journey to your home. During this time the strings WILL oxidize and this may shorten their life expectancy and may reduce their sound quality. On occasion instruments may arrive with a broken string, therefore, it is recommended that you purchase a replacement set of strings and consider changing your strings as soon as it arrives. Learning to change strings should be the first lesson learned when embarking on the journey of playing a new instrument. Top to learn more

Good book
I found this book to be very helpful. It is for the beginner only, it has good descriptions and pictures, and a cd which allows you to hear what the tunes should sound like -- very important if you are trying to learn to play an oud by yourself from a book. Hal Leonard Oud Method is much better than the typical 'teach yourself to play...' book for an instrument. I would highly recommend this book.

Product Description

The purpose of this book and its accompanying CD is to give the student not only a method from which to learn the oud, but also an overview of the history, folklore and origins of this beloved ancient stringed instrument. This book teaches the fundamentals of standard Western music notation in the context of oud playing, and serves as an introduction for absolute beginners as well as those experienced on other instruments. The book covers: types of ouds, tuning the oud, playing position, how to string the oud, music notation, scales, chords, arpeggios, tremolo technique, studies and exercises, songs and rhythms from Armenia and the Middle East, and a CD with 25 tracks for demonstration and play along. Hit and Miss for self study - okay for teaching from
Not a bad book, but not very comprehensive either. For example the section on picking takes up less than a 1/4 of 1 page, and isn't very descriptive.I guess what confuses me is the market for this book... it's completly geared towards music novices and gets into reading odd time signatures within a couple of pages. It also defines makam as "the traditional system of quarter tones" which is misleading at best, and closer in truth as outright wrong. Quarter tones are avoided entirely, which is understandable given that its trying to get people to play the pieces in tune.If you know some musical basics or if you already play guitar, you should be able to get by. I would just like to see a little more practical information. Having said that and having taught guitar for a number of years, if I were an oud teacher, I would probably recommend the book to students, as I think a teacher could help fill in some of the omissions.

Beautiful music. Highly recommended.
The music here is incredible, and if you have not listened to much music played on the oud, you owe it to yourself to check this out. My only complaint is the record company gives next to no information on the artists (the album is listed under "Various Artists"), nor does it list the country of origin of individual tracks, with a few exceptions. I was not even able to find anything on the web (a rarity for me). I downloaded this album, so perhaps a cd copy has some annotation.
