Fascinating And Troubling
Hitler's Holy Relics is the story of the search for the crown jewels of the Holy Roman Empire, ancient symbols of German nationhood which were used by Hitler, Himmler, and other Nazis as a way of claiming legitimacy for their regime. During World War II the jewels were hidden in a bunker in the city of Nurnberg. After Nurnberg was captured by the US Army in 1945 the search for the jewels began, led by Walter Horn, German born and American educated, who carefully tracked down the treasure. This is a fascinating story on several levels. The descriptions of the last few months of World War II and the immediate post war period in Germany are vivid and give a good picture of what the ordinary civilians in Nurnberg and elsewhere suffered through. Horn's painstaking search for the jewels is as intriguing as any detective story. Most of all, I appreciated the vast amount of information provided on the Nazis' use of mythological and religious imagery and their distortions of...

FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!
If you really enjoy history, you will love this incredible true never-before-told story. If you have a fascination with WWII, then you will love it even more. What's amazing is that you really don't have to enjoy history or have a fascination with WWII to be dazzled by the story. You don't have to be interested in art-history. You don't have to be interested in mysteries. You do have to know how to read and you have to be good at turning pages because this is a real page-turner. Take it to the beach. It is great beach reading. It feels light even though it is really heavy. It feels easy even though it is filled with history lessons. I think I'm going to end up reading it twice!!

Product Description

From Paris to Stalingrad, the Nazis systematically plundered all manner of art and antiquities. But the first and most valuable treasures they looted were the Crown Jewels of the Holy Roman Empire. In Hitler’s Holy Relics, bestselling author Sidney Kirkpatrick tells the riveting and never-before-told true story of how an American college professor turned Army sleuth recovered these cherished symbols of Hitler’s Thousand-Year Reich before they could become a rallying point in the creation of a Fourth and equally unholy Reich.

Anticipating the Allied invasion of Nazi Germany, Reichsführer Heinrich Himmler had ordered a top-secret bunker carved deep into the bedrock beneath Nürnberg castle. Inside the well-guarded chamber was a specially constructed vault that held the plundered treasures Hitler valued the most: the Spear of Destiny (reputed to have been used to pierce Christ’s side while he was on the cross) and the Crown Jewels of the Holy Roman Empire, ancient artifacts steeped in medieval mysticism and coveted by world rulers from Charlemagne to Napoleon. But as Allied bombers rained devastation upon Nürnberg and the U.S. Seventh Army prepared to invade the city Hitler called “the soul of the Nazi Party,” five of the most precious relics, all central to the coronation ceremony of a would-be Holy Roman Emperor, vanished from the vault. Who took them? And why? The mystery remained unsolved for months after the war’s end, until the Supreme Allied Commander, General Dwight D. Eisenhower, ordered Lieutenant Walter Horn, a German-born art historian on leave from U.C. Berkeley, to hunt down the missing treasures. To accomplish his mission, Horn must revisit the now-rubble-strewn landscape of his youth and delve into the ancient legends and arcane mysticism surrounding the antiquities that Hitler had looted in his quest for world domination. Horn searches for clues in the burnt remains of Himmler’s private castle and follows the trail of neo-Nazi “Teutonic  Knights” charged with protecting a vast hidden  fortune in plundered gold and other treasure. Along  the way, Horn has to confront his own demons:  how members of his family and former academic  colleagues subverted scholarly research to help  legitimize Hitler’s theories of Aryan supremacy  and the Master Race. What Horn discovers on his  investigative odyssey is so explosive that his final  report will remain secret for decades.

Drawing on unpublished interrogation and  intelligence reports, as well as on diaries, letters,  journals, and interviews in the United States and Germany, Kirkpatrick tells this riveting and disturbing story with cinematic detail and reveals— for the first time—how a failed Vienna art student, obsessed with the occult and dreams of his own grandeur, nearly succeeded in creating a Holy Reich rooted in a twisted reinvention of medieval and Church history. Great Treasure Stories is right on!
This was just a great book. These really are great treasure stories of World War II. What a fascinating history of the plunder, and, often, the return of artifacts from Nazi Germany. This is a great piece of history and it's just a really good book!

Product Description

World War II was the most devastating conflict in human history, but the tragedy did not end on the battlefields. During the war, Germany--and, later, the Allies--plundered Europe's historic treasures. Between 1939 and 1945, German armed forces roamed from Dunkirk to Stalingrad, looting gold, silver, currency, paintings and other works of art, coins, religious artifacts, and millions of books and other documents. The value of these items, many of which were irreplaceable, is estimated in the billions of dollars. The artwork alone, looted under Hitler's direction, exceeded the combined collections of the Metropolitan Museum, the British Museum, and the Louvre. As the war wound to its conclusion in 1945, occupying forces continued the looting. The story of these celebrated works of art and other vanished treasures--and the mystery of where they went--is a remarkable tale of greed, fraud, deceit, and treachery. Kenneth Alford's Nazi Plunder is the latest word on this fascinating subject.

Garden of Thorns
Following in the footsteps of Ashes to Ashes and Dust to Dust, Garden of Thorns takes up the lives of Mark Owen and Hillary Chase after their meeting in Scotland. The story takes place in Mark's home town, Fort Worth, Texas where he is working on an archaeological dig at an historic mansion.Osburn House has a sinister past, over the years two women have died there and the method of their deaths brings back memories of Jack the Ripper. Is there a connection and does the evil live on today in the owners of the house, the wealthy Coburg family? As Mark learns more about the horrifying past of the house; Hillary, in her job at a local museum, finds a connection between the house and the ancient artifacts she is cataloguing for the Coburgs, and that connection leads to danger and death. There is more than one mystery to be solved in this book and all are meticulously plotted - just when you think you understand the characters and their motives another sub-plot raises...

Product Description

Mark Owen and Hilary Chase, who met at the excavation of a medieval Scottish priory in Dust to Dust, get back together in Fort Worth, Texas, his home town.

Hilary is working at a museum, curating a set of medieval artifacts recovered from the Nazis by famous explorer and writer Arthur Coburg. Only when he recently died did the existence of the artifacts come to light. Now his much younger wife, Dolores, wants to sell them to the museum.

Mark is helping British archaeologist Jenny Galliard excavate the Coburgs' eerie Victorian house, Osborne, a place scarred by two unsolved Jack-the-Ripper style murders.

The emotional scars of Hilary's past are still healing, much to Mark's sympathy and frustration combined. Putting together a relationship is hard enough without being drawn unwillingly into the dark secrets of the Coburg family.

No surprise Osborne is haunted. But Mark and Hilary are dismayed to find that Jenny Galliard is also haunted, by a mystery that dates not only back to World War II, but into medieval times.

A killer is still walking the shadows of Osborne House. Will Mark and Hilary survive long enough to find the solution to crimes both recent and distant, let alone long enough to find each other?

“...an onionskin plot, as layer after layer gets stripped away in new revelations...each little
revelation...sends the story in a new direction....Carl creates a fine set of characters with a healthy dose of strengths and weaknesses... she spices up the mixture with a dash of humor and also an interesting piece of realism...

--Timothy Lane, Fosfax

...Carl is very good at having a main mystery and then filling in the gaps of the story with a lot of little sub plots and secondary characters that really make the book enjoyable. Also, Carl gives the reader some good background information on the Fort Worth area and educates the reader on archaeology and artifacts all without the reader even being aware that they are being taught, which is a nice side benefit. If you enjoy romantic mysteries, you will enjoy this one...

A Haunting Novel of Fatal Passion....
Mark Owen was excited that Hilary Chase had chosen to accept a position cataloguing the Coburg collecting in Fort Worth, TX, his hometown. They had met on a previous dig in Scotland (in Dust to Dust) and there was a definite attraction between the two. Mark was trying to take things slowly so that Hilary would not be frightened of physical intimacy and men in general. Hilary was trying to not be frightened of Mark and his need for a more physical relationship, but she still had not recovered from her rape years before. As Mark and Hilary try to sort out boundaries in their relationship, they also become more involved in the history of the Osborne House, where two women had mysteriously died in murders that were never solved. Mark was helping to supervise the dig and Hilary was cataloguing Coburg treasures, both of which had links in the past. But someone did not want them to delve any deeper into the past and would stop at nothing, not even murder, to keep the past...

Nazi's Art Plundering During World War II
As a young man Hilter was an aspiring but mediocre painter. But Hitler's artistic ambitions were thwarted when he was not accepted into the Academy Of Fine Arts in Vienna. Many of those on the admission board were apparently Jewish and some historians blame this rejection as playing an important role in the development of Hitler's rabid anti-Semitism.This doc begins with a discussion of the Nazi's hatred of modern art, which they considered a "degenerate" Jewish form, and their obsession with collecting classical works of art. From there the film proceeds chronologically through the German invasions of Austria, Poland, France and Russia. In each place the Nazis plundered great works of art. Some were taken into private collections, such as the vast number owned by Hermann Goering, the Nazi's second in command. Others were placed in storage, with Hilter's ultimate goal being to create a massive Fuhrer Museum in his hometown of Linz, Austria.Fortunately, massive...

The Rape of Europa
Quite simply, this is the best documentary I have seen in the past thirty years. As an instructor in 20th Century World History I have viewed hundreds of films relating to the Second World War. This is the primary area I focus upon with my students. The Rape of Europa is exceptionable film making and is unlike any other documentary both in its outstanding storyline and engaging cinematic presentation.Well over ninety-percent of the photographic imagery and historical background content was absolutely new to me.This is a film everyone should view and own in DVD format for their personal or family collection.I urge every educator to purchase a copy for their classroom, every librarian for their institutional patrons. My Highest Recommendation *****

A new slant on history
Incredible, amazing, unforgettable. Raises numerous unanswerable questions. To what extent did Hitler's actions stem from his rejection by the Viennese art school. Unsung heroes abound--from museum personnel to monuments men. Deservedly, the film seems to run forever in our small town of Santa Fe, NM. Still no end in sight. DON'T MISS!

He failed as a painter and was commonly regarded to have bad taste in art, but Adolf Hitler had an impact on the art world nevertheless--by attempting to destroy the "decadent" works residing inside the countries he invaded and by plundering those he desired for a museum he'd planned to construct in Austria. This documentary explores the threat posed by the Nazi dictator to the world's artistic treasures. Narrated by Joan Allen. 117 min. Widescreen; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital stereo. I’d not really thought about these issues until the last week when it was drawn to my attention that the Clifton auction house  Dreweatts was promoting a sale of Nazi memorabilia.  Someone has now paid £360 for the items that were presumably stripped from Hugo and Ida before they were murdered by the Nazis.  While visiting the Polish royal capital of Crakow I was determined to see something that, at the time, was most definitely not on the list of recommended places to visit, Oswiecim.  On the Dreweatts web site I can see that all sorts of German army military gear and Nazi badges were also up for sale.  The description is “ A Highly Emotive Third Reich Period ‘J’ Marked Deutsches Reich Reise-Pass for Hugo & Ida Leser No. 330 , containing a Jude armband and Star of David cloth insignia. The sale of Nazi memorabilia is banned or heavily controlled in Germany and many other European states.  An SS steel helmet went for £650 and a collection of various Nazi badges for £140. If people want to see these items then a museum is where you should go, not an auction house in Bristol.  Most recently was last summer while visiting the Holocaust exhibition at London’s Imperial War Museum.  Organised by the excellent Holocaust Education Trust, these visits are important to make sure that the current young generation witness at first hand the scene of the 20th century’s greatest crime against humanity.  I don’t know how much money they made out of trays, helmets, badges and the memory of Hugo and Ida.

Did you realize that Homeland Security is involved in the repatriation of stolen works of art. A Christie's employee realized the last painting was probably stolen. They have helped repatriate nearly 2500 piece of art since 2007 in 23 countries.

If you pass, you proceed to the next and so on. If a Danger is failed, your turn ends and the Danger card is flipped over to its Cliffhanger side, leaving you in an even more dangerous situation for next turn. The artifact cards are the items to be found, and have a Fortune value which is the worth of the artifact. The Adventure cards give the Dangers Value that shows how difficult it is to find by virtue of how many dangers you will need to overcome to collect the artifact. As you overcome dangers, you may take wounds or decide to cash in and get the glory for dangers overcome so far. Once you recover an Artifact, you collect the Glory for any dangers overcome this turn.

Marilyn Manson hit the down low in his music career after the former keyboardist of his band, Marilyn Manson Band, sued him for more than $20 million, claimed he had used the band money to buy Nazi artifacts. Manson, moreover, also use the money to buy "African masks made of human skin, the full skeleton of a 4-year-old Chinese girl, and the full skeleton of a 17th-century male in a wheelchair," not to mention his personal drug treatment, a low-budget... " The keyboardist claimed the shock rocker used the money the band earned from 2004 to 2006 to buy a $2 million home, collect Nazi paraphernalia and to give his fiancee at the time a handbag once owned by Eva Braun.
