Fun, Educational Read
I read this book from the context of a long-term buy and hold, value-oriented investor. Although I take what options/LEAPS experts say with a grain of salt because their perspective is so often technically (read: chart, volatility) oriented, at the end of the day I must concede that Harrison Roth's claim that there is an options/LEAPS strategy for every cloth is accurate. Roth's book is much funner to read than the average investment strategy book. Rereading "LEAPS" is hardly a chore --and readers will likely find themselves rereading, with pleasure, as new investment opportunities arise.

If You Trade Options, This is a Must-Read Book
I read everything I can get my hands on. No matter how you choose to trade options (buying, selling, spreading, stradling) you will find insight in these easy-to-read pages. Although written with the LEAPs investor in mind, ALL of this book is applicable to shorter term option trades. The author's clarity is superb, and includes excellent examples. I have used the LEAPS Money Generator and covered straddles (chapter 13) with 1 and 2 month options with great success. Don't pass up this book on options because of the L (for long-term)in its title. You can apply every technique to any time frame! The bonus is that if you never considered LEAPS option trades, I think you will find a new respect and use for them in your trading plan.

Excellent Analysis on China
The two case studies at the end of the book are excellent. Schwarz spends the first half discussing general investment principles and the second half discusses how to implement them in today's market. My favorite part was his analysis on China. What happens in China will have a huge impact on what happens in the U.S. The Chinese obsession with the year 2020 is paving the way for a peaceful ascent of Communistic rule that will increase its anti competitive reach. Unless the rest of the world wakes up and confronts these guys, China will be a winning investment play but a terrible political play at the same time. Definitely worth the read!

This Author is #1 on Wall Street
I've followed Jason for quite some time and there is no other Wall Street commentator who 'gets it' like he does. He's a young guy who seems to comprehend the new conditions on Wall Street much better than the old guard. The main point of the book is that since the year 2000 the frequency of volatility in the stock market has increased deeming the buy and hold strategy null and void. Basically buy and hold sucks, technical analysis sucks, but Schwarz's system of economic timing is a strategy fit for the times. He made great calls on Bank of America, Apple, oil, Imax, General Electric...many of which are documented in the book. i've got a lot of confidence in what comes from his pen.

Bravo! Finally A Great Book for Individual Investors!
This book is about so much more than just option LEAPS. In my opinion, it should be read by all people, whether you consider yourself an investor or not. The author uses a common sense tone to detail the importance of economic cycles, bubbles, crisis situations, China, technology, and how each variable has altered the status quo. Many of the analogies used throughout the book are brilliant! I expect The Alpha Hunter will end up as one of the top financial books of 2010. An EXCELLENT book!
Only one word adequately describes this book:- "EXCELLENT!" The author not only describes, in detail, and, with numerous examples for clarity, all the advantages of using LEAPS in your investment program, but he also goes into details of the negative aspects, or the downside, of each of these strategies. Unlike many other books on the subject of options, Mr. Thomsett discusses their use from the perspective of the small investor (using 100 share lots) and not, as in various other publications, institutionally sized lots of 40-50 options (which is 4-5000 shares each time). In order to obtain the full benefit from this book though, you need to be already conversant with trading options. A good entry point for this would be a previous book of his:- "Getting Started in Options", or, even better, my personal favorite:- "Using Options to Buy Stocks" by Dennis Eisen. Worth owning, but not for beginners.
While this book provides a lot of strategies, a lot of the strategies are just very close variations of other strategies. The strategies overlap significantly. The book seems to repeat itself a lot. I believe it contains a few errors and makes some major oversimplifications. For those reasons, this book is not for the novice investor.It's worth the price, because you will find something in this book that will make money for you.

This book is one of the best options texts I've ever read. The material is presented in a clear, easy to understand manner and is less technical than the McMillan books, but is still useful to the experienced options investor.One thing I like about the book is that it defines the difference between trading and investing and presents strategies for both options traders and investors (though I disagree with the manner in which he differentiates the two groups).As the title indicates, the book concentrates on LEAPS strategies and presents a number of conservative uses for these instruments. Included in these strategies are stock replacements, covered call writing, spreads and using deep-in-the-money LEAPS as an alternative to margining stocks.I've been an options investor for nearly 30 years and employ the more conservative strategies mentioned above to enhance the returns on my equity portfolio.
