Awesome!
Imagine the bell song being sung by the only dramatic coloratura soprano on record. AWESOME! Listen to Lily Pons' version of the bell song, great as it was, then listen to Sutherland's, you won't believe your ears! And on top of all that wonderful coloratura, Sutherland had at the time of this recording, one of the most gorgeous, sensuous voices around. Without question the best recording of this opera! I never realize how wonderful Lakme's music is until I bought this recording!

Exotic!
This is a very beautiful interpretation of such a great but terribly underrated opera. Delibes creates a very exotic and enchanting work in Lakme. Listen to the strange overture and the opening chorus. The cast is excellent. Gabriel Bacquier seems to, in every one of his recordings, put in a performance of a lifetime. His Nikalantha is incomparable. He sings great and the characterization is a perfect match to his commanding presence. Alain Vainzo's Gerard is also beautifully and distinctively lyrical, and he's not a loser like Pinkerton. Monica Sinclair is another perfectly cast Miss Benson, she is so convincing and sings with such dignity. Sutherland is obviously the star of the set. Her technique is amazing. In the bell song she sounds like a bell and she sings beautifully throughout. The Flower duet is also beautifully rendered here. I am kind of sick of the opera politics too as a previous reviewer stated. For the great service Joan Sutherland has given to the world...

Bravissima
Sutherland's famed diction is much better in French than Italian. She is breath-taking as Lakme. What a vocal wonder! The bell song is "Inhuman", it's so awesome. Spectacular high E's shot out the diva's mouth like cannonballs, ravishing trills on high B. No one can trill like Sutherland, and she's the only soprano in history who could trill on a high D-flat. Too bad Decca chose not to re-release another of Sutherland'sincredible role "Esclamonde". Sutherland is the only Dramatic Coloratura Soprano of our time who can sing Esclamonde. A role written for a Brunhilde size voice with the agility of a Lakme. Decca, if you're listening, you must re-release Esclamonde!!!

Delibes's opera Lakmé is full of gorgeous melodies, even if you don't count the coloratura sensation, the famous "Bell Song." That aria virtually demands a soprano of Sutherland's agility and ease, and it gets it here. Even the few singers who can match her in the upper altitudes can't do it with a voice so rich and full. Sutherland's is a Lakmé beyond comparison with twittering, thin-voiced, coloratura specialists. She did make this recording at a time when her diction was mushy and her vocal lines sometimes drooped, so she's not beyond criticism. But revel in the voice; after all, Lakmé is a cardboard character, and the opera, for all its considerable charms, isn't another Ring cycle. Sutherland's colleagues are excellent, too. Vanzo was one of the finest lyric tenors of his generation and is by far the best Gérald on disc. Jane Berbié and Gabriel Bacquier are also unmatched, and Bonynge's conducting is idiomatic and flowing. Add engineering from Decca/London's golden age of recording, and here's a Lakmé to treasure. --Dan Davis Top to learn more

The Greatest Lakme ever!
With her ability to color every phrase delicately, Natalie Dessay is undoubtedly this century's greatest coloratura soprano. Highly underrated, she could easily bring truth to her interpretation of this Lakme through her very good reading of the score and her ability to enunciate her French very well. Gregory Kunde is one of the greatest rising French tenors. Michel Plasson showcases Delibes' mystical and erotic music through a very passionate, delicate, and at the same time flowing reading of the music. A must for any fan of this great opera. I would recommend it highly over the Mady Mesple and definitely over the Sutherland version. Own it today, you won't be disappointed.

The Sensuality of French Opera, Delibes, Lakme
Finally some of these French opera treausures are coming to life once again! It seems that for so long, the gentle beauty and simplicity of French opera had taken the back seat to the more well known Italian works of Verdi or the high profile works of Mozart. Only the Italian masters Giacomo Puccini and Pietro Mascagni seemed to incorporate some of the French finesse into their dramatic and powerful music. This newest recording of Leo Delibes "Lakme" is to be commended for once more bringing the sensual and beautiful music to the forefront in the enchanting love story set in British occupied Colonial India. The Indian priestess, Lakme, sung by Natalie Dessay delivers the gentility and innocence in her vocal interpretation of the fragile character. Dessay delivers with ease the stirring moments in the "Air des clochettes" of Act II and manages the higher register with the greatest of ease. Likewise, Michel Plasson conducts the score as I am certain Delibes...

Perfect!
Here we have a recording of effortless beauty. Lakmé is an opera of many nuances, in the plot itself as well as in the music. The sentiments though are never very strong and since the story isn't strong either, the opera relies very much on it's sweet music. This means that if this delicate score is put in the wrong hands it can turn out banal, pathetic and boring. Fortunately, the hands of Micheal Plasson turns out to be perfect for this opera. He's cautious but very thoughtfull, leaving no details unnoticed. And with 'his' Toulouse opera-company behind him, the orchestral playing reaches nothing but first class - sounding both like flowers and bells, when so called for. The detailed recorded sound also brings forth especially the strings in a lovely way. The singers? Well, they're all in class with their conductor. Dessay sings Lakmé with a very pure voice, really making you believe that she is as innocent as here role demands. When the sensualism begins,...

For all its exotically tinged, trademark Orientalism, so fashionable in late-19th-century France, Delibe's opera Lakmé is at heart a simple story of tragically misplaced love. This marvelous and sensitively wrought interpretation renders the intensity of that love story with a surprising emotional credibility. Conductor Michel Plasson allows the music's arching melodies to breathe and unfold leisurely, like a lovingly cultivated floral display; he even discovers hidden nuances within the formulaic fluff that pads Delibe's score. And his vision is shared by the outstanding principals here. As the titular Hindu princess, Natalie Dessay gives a jewel-like performance, full of stunningly shaped phrases and tapered notes that sound like spun silk (and one that can favorably compare with Joan Sutherland's account on London). Yet she also offers substance where others are satisfied with mere vocal beauty, conveying both the fatal innocence of her character and an intense capacity to suffer. Gregory Kunde portrays the English interloper Gerald with moving tenderness, while he manages the high tessitura of the part with elegance and flexibility. There's a sense of shared vulnerability that the pair bring to their first duet, one of several unforgettable touches on this recording. The cast is filled out with rich characterizations, most notably José Van Dam's imposingly authoritarian Nilakantha. The subtle intimacy of detail Plasson inspires throughout as well as the fine engineering makes this recording a winner. --Thomas May Top to learn more

Bravissima!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
At the time of this recording, Dame Joan had one of the most beautiful and sensuous voice before the public. And she was a true DRAMATIC coloratura soprano, the rarest of all voices only hinted by the legendary sopranos of Donizetti and Bellini's time. But of course, Dame Joan was the REAL thing, and luckily we have the recordings to prove it. This lakme outshines all others. Sutherland's notes...all the way up to high E were all effortless, with all staccati, trills and fioritura done to perfection. For even more incredible singing however, go buy Dame Joan's " The Art of the Prima Donna"( The greatest achievement by any human voice in memory ). You will not be disappointed. Prima Donna Assoluta...

Delibes, Sutherland...that's all you need to know
While this production of Lakme is far from perfect, the opportunity to see a rarely performed work of extreme lyrical beauty featuring the great Joan Sutherland in one of her signature roles is more than enough justification for purchasing the DVD.Lakme is an unfairly neglected opera, more known for its showpieces than for the work as a whole, and it is difficult to understand why. Personally, I think audiences would take to this score, which is chockful of memorable melodies and is obviously influenced by Bizet, because of its post-Carmen sound(especially apparent in the orchestration) mixed with the exoticism that was so popular in French opera at that time. Granted, Lakme lacks the depth of Carmen, the uniqueness, the sheer untethered ingenuity, not to mention the standout characters, and the romantic connection here seems forced and unconvincing. Basically, it's all about the music, but what music. Lakme might be fluff, but fluff has seldom sounded better...

Excellent all round production
The singing is the strongest plus of this production. All of the singers do a splendid job with their respective roles. The acting is undistinguished and the stage settings although adequate to create an appropriately lavish, indian setting smacked of plastic. For a 30 year old production the transfer to DVD is acceptable. Non removable English sub-titles are included as is a brief description of the plot during the orchestral prelude to each act. This is one of my favourite operas and this production has earned itself a top shelf location among my opera DVDs. I wholeheartedly recommend this DVD to anyone who has an interest in either Lakme and/or Joan Sutherland.

Fantastic Selection at a Great Price
When it comes to opera artists, my motto is "The more Gedda, the bettah." You get a substantial amount of him at his best on this CD, which has a lot of great duets from a variety of operas. You have one of the most beautiful duets ever in my opinion as the first track on the CD(Bizet's aria about two friends in love with the same woman, "Au Fond du Temple Saint" from Les Pecheurs des Perles); this recording with Nicolai Gedda singing the tenor part of Nadir is the best one could ask for. The rest of the best include "Bei Mannern, welche Liebe" from Mozart's Die Zauberflote(a beautiful ode to the connection between men and women), and (not surprisingly), "O mimi, tu piu non torni" with Gedda and Sereni from La Boheme.Other notable arias include a nice recording of the famous "Sull'aria," from Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro, and an above par recording with Victoria de los Angeles and Carlo de Monte of "Un di, felici, eterea" from Verdi's La Traviata. This would be a great...

You can't go wrong with this CD
I got this very reasonably priced cd just to have my favorite duets such as "Au Fond du Temple Saint" and "The Flower Duet. If you have friends who are just starting to like classical opera, this is a terrific little gift. Almost everyone melts at the sound of these duets. And it's convenient to have so many on one CD. A real winner.

A wonderful introduction
I bought this CD because wanted the "Lakme" duet that I heard in a movie. Little did I know the rest of the music would blow me away. This is an excellent intro to opera for people like myself that have never really been "into" opera. The selections are short, just a taste, and the price is unbelievable. I highly recommend this selection to anyone who wants to get their feet wet.
