Teacher and Parent
I bought this for my son's third birthday. He's already an avid entomologist. The larvae arrived just as expected already shedding its skin, which each one did multiple times. It was fascinating for my husband and me as well. The three of us found ourselves glued together watching these amazing creatures as the larvae shed it's final skin and entered the pupa stage. Several days after the fully-formed ladybugs emerged (they were yellow at first), we set them free into our back yard. They have a distinct appearance which is slightly different than the ladybugs we're accustomed to seeing around here. Therefore we have been able to easily identify them when we come across them in our yard. We received about 14 or 15 ladybug larvae and all survived to become ladybugs except for one, which I consider to be pretty impressive. The container was especially effective because my son was not able (or tempted) to manhandle to ladybugs, yet it was easy to keep the water filled with the...

A neat learning experience...
My 4 year old daughter is a ladybug nut. We got this for Christmas and sent away for our larvae which come in a tube in the mail with all the food they need. Even the adults were fascinated watching the larvae turn to pupa and then to ladybugs. The customer service was very helpful when we called because our bugs stopped doing anything. They told us the bugs were "dormant" because it was too cold in my daughters room. We moved them to a warmer spot and within 30 minutes had ladybugs!! Definitely worth the cost. It is clean and sturdy thank goodness! Although the inside does get slightly messy (of course). We loved it.

A ladybug lover's dream
My 3-year old absolutely LOVES ladybugs, and this item was a big hit with her. We kept it on the kitchen counter, near where we eat, and the ladybugs and their activities were always a popular dinner conversation topic! When the weather turned warm enough, we released the ladybugs in our yard and watched each and every one of them spread their wings and fly away. I am sure we will order additional larvae and do it all over again. The product is sturdy (we just had to remind our daughter not to jostle or try to lift the dome) and makes it easy to achieve successful results. A very fun and experience for the entire family!!

Once you receive your larvae, put them in the Ladybug Land domed habitat and watch them crawl over the plastic paths and "mountains," eat their special food, and grow.

Observe the Metamorphosis Up Close
Eventually, the crawly little larvae will enter the pupae stage, in which they attach themselves to the habitat dome and begin their metamorphoses into adult ladybugs. Insect Lore guarantees at least 10 larvae will grow into adult ladybugs.

Your Very Own Ladybugs
Once the spotted ladybugs emerge, children can have lots of fun feeding them, watching them crawl around, and even carefully removing them and holding them. You can feed your ladybugs raisins that have been plumped in water, or you can feed them aphids from your backyard. The kit comes with a pipette and a watering pad for giving the ladybugs water.

If you receive your ladybug larvae during warmer weather, when temperatures are above 55 degrees, you can experience the excitement of releasing mature ladybugs into the wild. Larvae are available for delivery year-round, so if yours arrive in a colder month, you can keep your fully-grown ladybugs in the habitat for their lifespan. Ladybugs can live for up to a year in the wild, but if you keep them in their habitat, they'll live for about two to three weeks.

Additional mail-in certificates are available for order, so you can reuse Ladybug Land and experience the magic of metamorphosis again and again.

Ladybugs to the rescue!
This is the first year I've had trouble with aphids on my tomato plants. They were looking pretty sickly, at first I thought they just weren't great quality plants, or perhaps I planted them too early - we had a really wet spring. On closer inspection the leaves were covered with tiny little tomato-life-sucking aphids. I browsed around the web to find a solution and settled on these ladybugs, largely because the reviews for the 4500 qty were so good. I ordered them, it took about a week to get them (we had a holiday weekend and they came USPS) and in spite of the mail carrier sticking the poor guys in our enclosed mailbox on a hot summer day they were all (save 2 or 3) alive. They come in a mesh bag with straw and a cotton ball with presumably water, enclosed in a cardboard protective sheath. When we got them it was after 5pm and the little guys were going nuts in the bag so I decided to go ahead and release them. I could hardly get the bag open before they were streaming out...

Product Description

Ladybugs are general predators that feed on a variety of slow-moving insects including Aphids, Moth eggs, Mites, Scales, Thrips, Leaf Hoppers, Mealybugs, Chinch Bugs, Asparagus Beetle larvae, Whitefly and other slow-moving insects. Ladybugs are a must-have for organic gardening or organic farming. A ladybug eats insects during both the adult and larval stages, so you can buy ladybugs as adults and continue to have live ladybugs eating through other parts of their life cycle as they reproduce. Adults are shiny, hemispherical beetles, often reddish-orange or yellow, with black markings. Larvae are black, with conspicuous legs and orange spots on their backs. The larvae are often compared in appearance to tiny alligators, and are similarly aggressive in consuming insects. The larvae move from plant to plant on leaves. Larvae pupate on the upper leaf surfaces, plant stems and twigs. Eggs are yellowish-orange ovals, laid on end in clusters of 10 to 50. Shipped: In mesh bags, or natural, unbleached, reusable cotton bags. Store In a regular household refrigerator for one to two weeks max. Release Tips: Release at dusk, after spraying some plants with water, so they can drink. Release near infestations in small amounts over a two week period. Release Rates: 1,500 ladybugs covers aprox.100 sq. feet. Half pint covers aprox. 3,000 sq. feet. 1 gallon covers aprox. 1 - 5 acres Heavy infestations use 1-2 gallons per acre. Top to learn more

Age range is wrong
I homeschool a 8, 6, 5 and 3 year old. I bought this to do a lesson along with releasing 1500 ladybugs in our garden. I found it a little young for my oldest three kids. There is good information but I wouldn't really put this further than first grade level. There are places where the information is a little more indepth. This might be a nice introduction to ladybugs for young kids or perhaps just a reading book, not school related, but I wouldn't put this in the second grade level.

Great way to get rid of aphids on tomato and rose plants
Used them to get rid of the aphids on my aerogarden plants in the house. If you release them when the room is dark and the door is shut they make their home on the plants. When it gets light out and you open the doors the next morning they've already settled in on the plants so they don't fly around the house. They got rid of tons of aphids within a few days. Something that I tried to do safely for 2 months with no success. Update - I had another aphid infestation this year (Mar 2011) on the tomato, parsley and pepper plants I started in our sun room. I again ordered the lady bugs and they did the trick. They arrived healthy and well-packed. When you are using them indoors, release them at night when they are less likely to fly around. I kept the door to the sunroom shut that night and the next day and it gave them enough time to make their homes in the plants. The doors are open now and I've only had a couple of lady bugs go exploring in the rest of the house...

Wow! That is a lot of ladybugs.
I really only wanted about 100 ladybugs but 1500 was the only amount I could find. Hirt's shipped them very quickly and I had them in less than a week even being shipped to an APO address. My wife about killed me for getting the bugs. I was surprised when I opened the box and saw all the ladybugs moving around. I thought several of them would be dead, but it appeared all or nearly all of the bugs survived. I rinsed the bag and refrigerated the bugs like the instructions said to do. Then I released them right before it got dark. All of the ladybugs seemed to crawl around and find a place to stay. I am very happy with my purchase from Hirt's.

Well worth trying if you have an aphid problem
We had such a bad aphid problem that it made our backyard impossible to use without getting covered in little green bugs in a matter of minutes. I purchased one package of the ladybugs. They arrived alive and wiggling in their container w/almost no (if any) loss on route. They come with easy to follow directions including washing them upon arrival, refrigerate and release at dusk. We released them three days ago. While I don't actively see many of the ladybugs now (most I assume headed for the tree where I think most of them were), there is a huge reduction in the number of aphids in the yard to the point that my husband was able to sit outside and enjoy the yard for a few hours yesterday. I will probably buy one more package in a week or so to get any straggler aphids.

Product Description

A favorite "good bug" and alternative to chemicals, ladybugs have been a popular part of the Orcon line of beneficial insects for over 20 years. When released at sundown (because they don't fly at night), ladybugs eat aphids, mealy bugs, scale, leaf hoppers, various plant eating worms and other destructive soft bodied pests. And they keep on eating until the bad guys are gone, laying their own eggs in the process. When new pests arrive, fresh ladybugs will be waiting. Each container includes approximately 1500 live ladybugs. Restricted State: Hawaii Top to learn more

Product Description

The natural enemy of many species of pests, insects, and mites, the Green Lacewings are shipped as eggs that will soon hatch into larvae. The tiny larvae are known as "Aphid Lions" because of their voracious appetites (devouring as many as 1000 aphids per day). They remain as larvae for up to 21 days, just crawling around looking for food. Aphid Lions also make hearty meals of Mealybugs, spider mites, caterpillars, thrips, leaf hoppers, whitefly larvae, a wide variety of moth eggs, and just about any other soft bodied pest. The adult green lacewing only feeds on pollen, but it will immediately begin laying eggs, and the life cycle will repeat. 1,000 eggs. Restricted state: Hawaii Top to learn more
