Product Description

Kumquats are the only citrus that can be eaten whole. To enjoy at its best, roll the fruit lightly between your hands to release the aromatic oils, and chew the entire fruit all at once to combine the sweetness of the rind and the acidity of the pulp and produce a unique experience. Kumquats are used for cooking and baking and can be candied or preserved. The word Kumquat comes from the Cantonese kin kü, meaning 'golden orange'. Kumquats are traditional gift items during the Chinese New Year. Top to learn more

Meiwa Kumquat
I purchased a 1-2 Year Old Meiwa Kumquat Tree in a Grower's Pot from Lemon Citrus Tree.I ordered it early Monday and had it by the end of the day Tuesday. The tree was packaged well and only had a few small minor branches broken that I pruned off. I think a few broken branches should be expected when receiving a tree in the mail. The tree came to me with about 20 Kumquats already on it and it looks very healthy.

Product Description

Meiwa Kumquats are a delicious balance of sour and sweet flavors. The Meiwa Kumquat Is referred to as the sweet kumquat. Meiwa Kumquats Trees are very hardy. They have been know to with stand cold temperatures of 20F. These trees can grow in any place all country wide. The Meiwa Kumquat tree often produces several crops each year, and the Christmas crop is usually the largest. Works great as a patio plant. If you live in a cold climate, just bring it inside during the winter. It produces abundantly indoors or out. Just place it in front of a sunny window and pick fresh fruit throughout the winter. About Fruit Production: Due to the blossoming cycles of Citrus & Fruit Trees we cannot guarantee that any of our trees will arrive with developed fruit on them. Since our trees are grown from grafts of mature trees, they do produce fruit years sooner than a seeded tree would. Usually our trees will begin to blossom and produce fruit around two to three years old. The older a tree is, the more likely it is to produce fruit. Fruit production is seriously effected by the care that the tree receives and also the climate that the tree resides in. With proper care, any of our trees will thrive and produce fruit for many years. That's why we back our trees with a 3 year warranty! Top to learn more

ABC's of Selection to Enjoying
One of the things I really appreciate about the book is each of the 100 Fruits and Vegetables is presented with a breakdown for you to follow. Initially, you learn the value it offers to your body in the way of nutrients. At which point, the author tells you specifics step by step: Looks Like/Tastes Like; Select it; Store it right; Prep it Right; Tips (different means of preparation); Culinary destinations (how to serve it with other parts of the food pyramid - example what meats it compliments); To Your Health (safety warnings and USDA recommendations). Each section is pretty concise so you don't have to read 10 pages to get to the point. It contains photos so you really don't have to guess when you are in the store.I think this book offers more insight on how to expand your use of fruits and vegetables. I live in the subtropics and though I have tasted things from the Islands and Central and South America, I have had no idea how to prepare them or even exactly...

Couldn't beat the price
Was happy to find this out of date book (replacing a friend's who spilled soup all over it - one of her favourite books). It was exactly as ordered and was received quickly.

Tons of great info and pics!
How would you like to have a house filled with mini tropical trees and plants? I love that idea, it offers so many benefits, from home grown produce to beautiful plants to accent your decor and freshen your air. Understanding what the book offers is not so difficult, since in large, colorful text, the cover of the book gives it's full title: Growing Tasty Tropical Plants* (like lemons, limes, citrons, grapefruit, kumquats, sunquats, tahitian oranges, barbados ... tea, black pepper, cinnamon, vanilla, and more...) *in any home, anywhere. Inside the book are dozens of exotic plants, flowers, fruits, and other delectable, beautiful and wonderfully exotic plants that normally grow in exotic climes. As it turns out, any sunny window in your home probably qualifies as an "exotic clime," and the idea of coming home to discover the lovely aroma of some exotic tropical flowering fruit seems a little like heaven on earth.Growing Tasty Tropical Plants includes lovely drawings of each...

Great read!
This book is great. It is well-designed, has great photos of the plants, and easy to understand cultivation info. It has advice on how to raise the plants indoors or outdoors and tells what temperatures indoors or what zone the plants can tolerate outdoors. Being a tropical book, expect most plants need zone 8-10. The book gives details on which plants produce most fruit, which ones need hand-pollination, what sun conditions they can tolerate, etc. If you're a rare plants junkie, get it!

Lots of inspiration but only basic information
To complement the Kumquat tree that I bought my husband for his birthday, I also bought the book Growing Tasty Tropical Plants in Any Home, Anywhere by Laurelynn G. Martin and Byron E. Martin. True to form, however, I ended up reading the book and just giving him the highlights. The book itself is by Storey Publishing - a name I tend to trust - and is 160 pgs. It is a quick read that I finished cover-to-cover in just a few hours and is broken down into five parts plus an introduction, glossary and resource guide.Introduction: Enjoying an Indoor Edible OasisPart 1: Citrus FruitsAustralian Finger LimeCalamondin OrangeCitronCitrumeloGrapefruitKumquatLemonLimeMyrtle-Leaf OrangeOrangeSunquatSweet LemonTahitian OrangeTangerineTemple OrangePart 2: The Rest of the Tropical Fruit BasketAcerolaAustralian Beach CherryAvocado...

Buy Kumquats

I don’t like it but I can’t change it. Comment by  Donald — May 7th, 2012 @ 9:34 am. Nice story, but you might have visited some of the longstanding chain grocery stores that are less than a mile away (Big Y, and Stop & Shop) to get the full... As someone who spends a little time each year in “Wegman’s Country”, my personal POV is that Wegman’s is most of what Whole Foods is without the premium pricing, and it’s therefore the local addition I long for the most. Even if I don’t plan to buy any of the seven coconut oils carried by Whole Foods, I like knowing they’re available. As the story says,”O’Brien is a married suburban father of two teens who wouldn’t know a candlenut from a kumquat and whose primary concern when grocery shopping is price. It’s not my job to save the world buying free trade kumquats or coffee. , on Friday to visit a Whole Foods Market and a Trader Joe’s, which sit three-tenths of mile apart, the same distance as they will in Colonie once both stores are open. Ditto for grind-your-own peanut butter (plain, honey roasted or with chocolate) and almond butter, fill-your-own-container de-ionized or reverse-osmosis water, young coconuts with a handy straw for tapping and sipping while in the store, bulk... I only buy off the sale flyers and of course most of the “specials” were the item that other shoppers wanted and the aisles near them were jammed. I believe that Trader Joe’s will be quite successful here in the Capital Region but Whole Foods … I’m not so sure.

Not to be confused with open box items which are items that have been returned for various different reasons, refurbished items are items that have been restored to working condition by the manufacturer. However, if you're thrifty like I am, buying refurbished items like digital cameras is completely worth it. Especially when you find that you can't tell the difference between it and the same model costing hundreds of dollars more. If you're in the market for a new digital camera, it makes sense to save a few dollars and buy a refurbished one from a reputable dealer. There are a few caveats to buying refurbished items.

I try to buy things with minimal ingredients (see my post about body products), and to get the "truest" foods, make sure what you think you're consuming is actually the main ingredient. You are less likely to buy something if you do not see it. I try to walk as quickly past cheese as I can, because although I love  every variety of cheese, it's not great for you and I try to avoid walking out of the store with swiss, provolone,... Example: I will never buy grape juice if the first ingredient is not grapes. Well, I will tell you all that grocery shopping is one of my very favorite activities of the month (That's correct, I only go once a month because I'm poor and good food costs good money. Our bodies deal very well with (healthy) food change, and mixing up color and food itself can help our system function longer.   A good rule of thumb to have is to always buy something you've never had.
