Excellent book,but inadequate without a photocopier..
This book is very good.There are plenty of Kumon books for numbers ( 1-30, 1-70,1-120, 1-150 etc). While it is a legitimate wishful thinking of every parent that their kids be good at numbers of over 100, my suggestion is that the kids have to first get past this book on numbers before stepping into others.My kid is in prek at a Montessory school, So my purpose of buying the book was to reinforce what is taught at school.The book is very good in a way it takes the kid through the complexity of numbers in a clean fashion.First a generic drawing connecting the numbers etc.. However the biggest drawback I found in the book is the number of pages.There is virtually no repetition possible if the kid is not getting past a set of numbers.I will use number 2 as an example from a kid's perspectiveExercise goes like this :Chapter 11 :1,2,3 (the kid writes 4 times)2,3,4 (the kid writes 4 times)Chapter 12:...

Great Investment to Get Started
My 4.5 year old knew his numbers, but when I saw the inside of this book on amazon, I realized that I have not used any technique to build his basics in counting etc., and bought this bookNumbers 1-30 starts with simple curve excercises that allow the child to1. learn drawing curves2. reading and writing numbers3. introduces children [ and parents ] to focus on the stroke and the right way to write the numbers.4. Counting as groups and allows build up pattern recognition skillsMy son who was used to counting with his finger, now can count in groups by looking at a group of dots. Thanks Kumon.. Definitely worth the investment, but ...
I would highly recommend any of the kumon books, because they are very well done. The first 20 pages of this book were number tracings. Then it went to writing numbers by copying the numbers from very small text to writing them from memorization. This was too big of a jump for my son who had just turned 5. So we took a break and did the Uppercase book. Then we did the "review" part of the Simple addition book. Then we went back to this book and my son was able to continue just fine. I loved the book, but there should really be a whole book dedicated to tracing numbers, before requiring the child to write numbers from memory.

Wonderful quality - builds a great foundation
I looked at many workbooks in the book store before settling on this one, and I'm glad I did! It starts out with basics - connecting pictures and drawing straight lines horizontally and vertically - using very cute, clear graphics. It then progresses to diagonal lines, curved lines, zig zags, more complex curves, lines that cross over each other, etc. In this way, it gradually builds writing skills in a way that is fun for children. I also love that the paper is thick and high quality, the colors are vibrant, and the accompanying pictures are detailed and well-done.My 3 year old son loves this workbook and asks to do it almost every day. I have a hard time keeping him to 2-3 pages each day - he'd sit and do the entire book if I let him! If I try to have him draw lines on paper, he loses interest quickly, but he loves drawing lines in this book to make a train get to the end of it's route or to show an ant how to get to his friend around several pieces of fruit. Great Skill Builder
I recommend this book for anyone who would like to help their child develop pencil skills. Do not worry if your child does not immediately excel with this book, just remember all children develop differently and reach the point where they can follow instructions and do workbook skills at different times. Hold off for a while if needed and re-introduce once in a while until the child is ready. Once the child is ready - you will be surprised how interested in the book they become and how quickly their skills improve. I advise following the workbook instructions that you not let the child do more than 2 pages per session because if they are left wanted to do more they will eagerly come back to it the next time.I bought this book for my daughter when she was almost 3 but discovered she was not quite ready for it. She would follow the instructions sometimes, struggling to follow the paths, but many other times she was not interested in trying to follow the lines and would...

My 26 month old loves this book!!!!!!!
Every day my 2 year old says, "Book, book." We sit down and I show him how to hold the pencil, I steady his hand and he pulls the pencil in the proper direction (90% of the time). It's exciting for both of us. The pictures are beautiful and he loves looking at them. Also the pages are very thick, which keeps them from being easily destroyed.

Have scissors, will cut
Most children are fascinated with scissors and love to use them, yet they really have very little in their lives they can meaninfully cut. So what happens? Mom's magazine gets snipped to ribbons, baby sister or the dog get an amateur barber job, maybe they become a fashion designer: "I think my pants would be better as shorts!" Thankfully Kumon has come to the rescue and has come up with a book for children that they CAN cut, have fun with, and mom won't be upset!I reviewed Kumon's First Steps Series LET'S CUT PAPER, and that is the good FIRST book for cutting. Once your child has done that one, then there is this book with 40 wonderful, colorful pages to cut! Great intro to using scissors!
We like the Kumon books very much. We have several including My First Book of Cutting. My 3 year old was evaluated at preschool and did great on everything except cutting, so I immediately ordered this book since he had enjoyed the Tracing and Uppercase Letters workbooks. He loves it! We do 2-3 pages per sitting and he is already getting much better at his cutting skills and we're only about 15 pages into the book.My only complaint is that it is designed for right-handed cutters since the little arrows & scissors start from the right side of the page. My son is left-handed so I have him flip the paper over so he follows the arrows from left to right instead of vice versa.

Step by step, direct and to the point.
I love the Kumon series books, but what is more important is that my son loves the Kumon series books. The book goes step by step in buiding the confidence of the child in a given skill. The pages are visually appealing, and much better quality than most workbooks. My son is 4 1/2 and we are currently working on the "My First Cutting Book" and "Number Games 1 - 70". We have brought others in the series, but I am waiting to start them. They require writing numbers or letters and we are working the foundation of these skills through "Handwriting without tears" series.The "Big Workbooks" contain all of the skills in one workbook, but they don't go step by step or as in depth as the Kumon series does. When all of the individual books are added together they are going to cost more than the big workbooks, but it is worth the money.

One of the Few New Kumon Grade 1-6 Books That Are Actually Fun
This book is colorful and broken down into short sections with plenty of cute drawings. The first part of the book has a lot of tracing words to build self-confidence. Words are grouped by spelling patterns and activities are varied. My child really enjoys it!

Excellent for homeschooling
I have quite a few other workbooks which I have tried with homesccooling my first child. I discovered the Kumon books and really love them. My daughter does too - they are not as simple (and annoying to her) as the other books (school speciality, Learn at home... Those are OK, and i use them as a supplement to Kumon) Her reading and writing skills have jumped ahead since using the Kumon books, and only after about a month! This was after several months using other workbooks. I am very impressed, and have bought other books in the series. The math books and maze books are great too.Great content, Excellent quality paper too.

Builds Confidence
Excellent book to help young children learning basic addition skills. We started this book when my son was 4 years, 8 months. The going was slow for a while, but now we are more than halfway through the book, and I no longer have to guide him on every step. Prior to this book, he had not spent a lot of time learning to write his numbers (this was his first numbers workbook), and now he can write his number 1-29 without help.For the reviewer who mentioned the pages were full of too many math problems for one sitting, I agree. We improvise, and I divide each page in half with a marker. He gets a sticker for each half-page he completes.Most importantly, my son's confidence has dramatically improved. When we began the book, he was unsure of himself and easily confused by the many numbers, but time and patience has won out--and he races to get his book now.

Wonderful for beginers
I just love the Kumon workbooks because they are so well organized, with pages that are simply laid out and they introduce the information incrementally. It appeals to the learning style of my five year old. I was a tiny bit disappointed by how extremely simple this workbook is. It only covers adding 1 and 2 to the numbers 1 through 29. It says it right there on the cover but somehow I missed it. I would say it's definitely pre-school level and not kindergarten as I'd hoped. I'll probably just do a few of the pages with my five year old and order the next book to do this year with her and let my four year old use this when I need her to have busy-work. The information builds very slowly in this workbook and so it might not be ideal of the child who likes variety in their workbook pages or who struggles with being under-challenged or gets bored really quickly. However for my daughter this will be perfect.

Not as good as other Kumon workbooks
I have brought all of the Kumon workbooks. Most of the other workbooks are full of bright colorful pictures with lessons containing just the right amount of sit down work. That is not true with this book. It is just pages full of problems -- too many of them for one sitting. They call it simple, because you are only adding 1 to numbers 1 to 29, but it is a bit much for a child trying to learn this for the first time. The book is fine for speed improvements, but find a different book for first time learners.

This book is for kids who understand the idea of multiplication, but need some help with memorizing all the facts. Do one lesson a day and by the end of the 40th lesson the whole memorization will be done. Each lesson takes about 5 minutes.

We're so glad KUMON is now publishing books for upper level math! Using these books has helped my children master these concepts. They are taught step by step, to the child. Great practice!
My son is in the third grade. He was having a little difficulty with his multiplication. He got it but it took him a while. I think it has to do with how his school teaches. Anyway, now that he's started this book, he's a walking, human, multiplication calculator!
