great for emergencies
With deep winter upon us, these are great alternative heaters for people on electric heat. They provide 23,000 BTU - more than enough to heat 2-3 easily. VERY hot. Foutchie loves to roast her fur next to it. Runs for about 12 hours, a little longer if you cut it back. Easy refill, good protective guard. I have paid $50 more for ones not as high quality.I have had this brand before and they are long lasting.

Finally warm!
Our large, drafty, almost uninsulated rental home has a heat pump for "heat", and after one winter of freezing to death we bought this heater... Boy, is it nice to be warm again with REAL heat! We had blocked off rooms and used electric heaters before, and at times supplemented it with the central system which had to use resistance heat at the tune of $2.00 and HOUR to run. Seemed the second the central unit went out, the house was freezing again. This Kerosene heater is very easy to use, requires minimal maintenance, and puts out a LOT of heat fast. Only real smell is at start-up and especially at shutdown, but if you take the heater outside to start and stop, actual in use smell is almost zero if you use it properly. By properly for my particular unit means flame height as high as possible w/o curling (sooting), and adjusting the burner. Quality of the fuel obviously is a factor, and I have had pretty good luck with the un-dyed K-1 from several stations. With good...

good burner
REally a reliable heater. Mine burns all night without a problem. Starts eazy and love the new no break started plug instead of the little wire that brakes on most ignighters. Burn wick time is cut in 1/2.You can't fill tank without putting it out first-real saftey feature. No kero smell during, after burning. or shutting off. Miles knows his stuff, we all know who miles is by now.

A superb little radiant heater
Bought this heater through Northern tool. It functions well and really puts out the heat. It's a small unit and really easy to move around the house where heating is needed. I like the removable fuel tank and the ignition system.Smells just a little bit upon start up and shutdown, but other that that, it really burns clean and almost odor free. Use only fresh K1 kerosene in this heater, dry burn the wick once every 5 tanks of fuel and the wick should last you 3-4 heating seasons. Just make sure your kerosene does not have water in it. A trick I learned a long time ago is to add 1/2 tsb of ISO-HEET fuel line deicer and water remover to each gallon of kerosene. The Iso-HEET alcohol will absorb any water and burn it off without messing up the wicks ability to wick up the kerosene.

Senkogu radiant kerosene heater
Got it for $89 bucks + shipping from Amazon. Arrived, very timely. Does everything it says it does, but gives off a fair amount of fumes. Would work great for a garage, workshop, or emergency use, but can't see how you can use it "semi-regularly" in your house. A carbon monoxide detector is a must. It's "fair". Update: After the initial break-in period, there's no smell at all. My CO detector says "zero". Heats my entire 1 bedroom apartment great. I recommend this heater. Next time, I'll be more patient when reviewing something!

Some Flaws, but it does what it's meant to do. HEAT!
The Pros -- This thing delivers the heat! I live in a 980 sq. ft. mobile home with an open living room and kitchen. Even during the coldest months this unit kept me warm during power failures. The heat even traveled to the farthest bedroom, not heating it to the fullest, but keeping away the chill. It runs silently. The Cons -It does not run for the 12 hours, as stated on the outer carton. I suppose if you heated a very small bathroom it would regulate itself to the full 12 hours. I have to refill the tank every four hours. Since the unit is rather heavy and bulky it's difficult to carry it outside for refueling. It's even heavier on the return trip because of the full tank of kerosene. The carrying handle doesn't feel secure enough to haul that weight.Unless you run the tank completely dry, this unit flares up and sends a cloud of black smoke into the room during shutdown. A kerosene-stink will linger for half an hour. It has to be taken apart and cleaned every...

Did everything right!
I'm a young kerosene lamp collector but never encountered an unboxed Kerosene heater before. Decided to give it a try this winter since many gas stations here in Philly dispense undyed and untaxed 1-K cheaply ($2.80 in October 2009) and heating bills last few years are $200/month on average for our well insulated house. After reading reviews around, I was pretty settled on this omni-radiant design, but had reservations with the actual burning time due to short wick per this site and Mile Stair's site (highly recommended). Then I had a chance to pick one up several weeks ago. Only $10 as the seller was moving so I figured there's little to loose. It's a 2005 run in like new condition. While it's the first time I got my hands on a kero heater, mechanically there is really no difference between it and any center draft lamps, save everything is in bigger size! Lighted it up easily and enjoy the cheap heat every since. Two things I'd like to elaborate on this...

Poor quality factory wick
I've had this heater for just less than four weeks now. In the interest of disclosure, I'm certainly not an expert, and this is my second kerosene heater - I also have a dyna-glo 23k BTU that I've been using happily for about a year and a half.I was very excited to get this smaller 10k heater since the worst of the winter is about over in my area, and the Dyna-Glo is too much when the outside temp reaches forty or so. The item came double boxed and intact - great shipping and packing from Amazon as usual.I put it together (it was easy and the instructions were simple) and then went to carry it downstairs and nearly dropped it from the top steps because the handle fell out - this is definitely my fault, and luckily I hadn't filled it yet and had fast enough reflex to grab it before it tumbled down. Since then I've bent the handle inwards so that it fits a bit tighter and hopefully that won't happen again. However, the handle bends considerably when the unit...

Love This Little Heater
This is a great little heater if you don't need to heat huge spaces. At 10K BTU it is powerful enough to heat my 640 sq ft basement to 75 degrees even with a crack in the window and outside tempreture of 30 degrees. If you use a good quality Kerosene such as Crown 1-K or a reputable K-1 Clear suitable for use in unvented Kerosene heaters, you get virtually no odor from this heater. Adjust the flame correctly and it is a sweet burner for sure. I may use this one regularly to knock the chill off on those extra cold nights. I would recommend this heater.

Excellent pick for a smaller unit.
This is a solid little kero heater. It doesn't have the traditional twist -type knob for on/off and wick adjustment. Instead, it has a adjustable lever that slides up and down. Next to the lever is a push-type button to extinguish the heater, which sends the lever up to the off position. To start the heater, you simply push the lever all the way down to the bottom position and hold it there briefly. This engages the battery-operated ignition and lights the wick quickly. Interestingly, the heater has a audible chiming sound that is heard when the unit is ignited. After the unit lights ( in about 1-2 seconds) the lever can be released. This causes the lever to sit in the wick adjustable range on the lever slide.I have not had to adjust the wick once since purchasing this unit about 1 month ago.The fuel tank is of the type that is removed, filled and placed back in the heater from a hinged cover on the top of the unit.I was a little confused about the fuel level meter at first but have...

Nice Clean Kerosene Heater
I'm on my second season with this little heater. At the end of the 2009 winter we threw out the other kerosene heater because this one was so clean burning. Almost no fumes. The glass chimney (catalytic converter) is tall and this means extra-clean burning. Very Fuel efficient providing ~10 +/- hours on it's small 1 gallon tank. It's large enough for us to take the edge off the cold in our house living space. If we loose electricity this is also the back up heat for our house. A review on another web site noted quality Japanese parts, good design and clean operation. I purchased the heater directly on-line from Ace and picked it up at a local store.Another reviewer noted the loud sound the heater makes with the ignition button is pushed. This is not a buzzer but the sound from the pizo electric ignition system. This starter is suppose to be more reliable than the glow type.

30-80K Portable Propane Convection Heater
I use the Mr. Heater 30-80K convection heater in my garage, which is roughly 625 SF with high 14 ft. ceilings, CMU block wall, un-insulated ceiling. During winter months of the teens outside, I can bring the inside temp of my garage up to 70 degrees within a short time. However, you may need to hang a box fan up near the ceiling or install a ceiling fan to circulate the heat back down, it puts out a strong trickle of heat in a 360 degree radius that is easy to regulate to keep from alternating between freezing and roasting. The biggest plus for me with this unit it the lack of objectionable fumes as are produced by forced air kerosene heaters, the propane burns clean and is easy to purchase at my local filling station, no spills or lugging around 5 gallon containers of kerosene. If massive amounts of heat are what you want, you should consider the forced air propane heater made by Mr. Heater. They put out massive quantities of heat in short order.I...

Five Tips for Buying a Heater
Choosing a space heater is a matter of sifting through a bewildering array of types, power ratings, and fuel sources. Let's break it down a little to make the process easier.

What are the different types of space heaters?

  • Radiant heaters emit infrared radiation that directly warms the objects in front of the heaters (rather than the surrounding air). If you only need heat by a desk or in a small section of a room, a radiant heater is quiet and will use very little power.
  • Forced-air heaters use a fan to blow air that has been warmed by metal or ceramic heating elements. A forced-air heater is appropriate for quickly heating up a small- to medium-sized room, but can be noisy.
  • Convection heaters draw cold air from the floor; the air is warmed by heating coils and emitted from the top of the heater. A convection heater is appropriate for quickly heating up a small- to medium-sized room, but also can be noisy.
  • Radiators work by heating oil enclosed in a reservoir, gradually heating the surrounding air. If heating speed isn't an issue, you might want to opt for a radiator. These are extremely quiet and effective--perfect for bedrooms.

Should I buy an electric or a combustion model?
If you want a heater that will be available in emergencies, or that can heat areas larger than a single room, choose a "combustion" model--one that is powered by a gas or fuel like propane, kerosene, natural gas, or diesel. Which fuel type you choose depends largely on convenience and local availability. For example, diesel would be appropriate for a heater you take with you on long car trips.

How powerful a heater do I need?
Heaters are rated by BTU, which stands for British Thermal Unit (the amount of heat needed to heat one pound of water by 1 degree F). To find out how many BTU you need:

  • Calculate the volume of the space to be heated by multiplying square footage by height.
  • Multiply that number by 4 if your insulation is poor, 3 if it's average, or 2 if it's good.
The resulting number is a ballpark figure for how many BTU you'll need.

Do space heaters cost a lot to operate?
As a general rule, electric space heaters are more expensive to use than combustion models. To ensure energy efficiency, a thermostat is a must-have feature for any heater. For radiant heaters, models with a 360 degree heating surface can heat larger spaces. If you need a forced-air heater, models with ceramic elements tend to be more efficient.

Are space heaters a fire hazard?
Space heaters are implicated in about 25,000 residential fires every year. To ensure proper safety, always follow the manufacturer's usage instructions and fill out the warranty card to receive informational updates from the manufacturer. Also, look for extra safety features such as an automatic shutoff switch that can shut down the unit if, for example, it gets upended. In addition, choose a model where the heating element is adequately enclosed within the unit.

Lots of heat, and noise
This is a great heat generator, and sounds like a jet when running full blast. I love it, but when I use it on the covered patio of a party people think it is too loud. For working around it is good, but for a party situtation I wish I had found one of the short unbrella style heaters instead, the radiat the heat down better and are not loud.

Excellent Heater
Easy to operate and puts out a lot of heat. Wife and I both enjoy using it. The safety grill makes it safe for our preschool aged children. We initially purchased this for back-up heat. However, our home has 11-foot ceilings and just one 1500 watt wall heater per room. So, we're using this heater regularly to get things initially warmed up in the morning. We run it on cold mornings for about an hour or two and it warms the whole downstairs.Lighting this heater inside is fine, but some people may want to shut it off outside as there is a bit of smell on shutdown. If the batteries are low on the starter, you can also light it with a match.Kerosene fuel is a bit expensive, but the heat value is quite high per gallon. You can cut the cost by buying in larger quantities -- 55 gallon drum drops the cost to about $5 a gallon...which puts heater operation cost at just under $1 an hour for fuel. 1.9 gallon tank burns 10-12 hours Otherwise, buying in...

Great Patio Heater
We live in a 3rd story condo, and are planning a New Years party. We just redesigned our patio built benches, made cushions, and I wanted the patio to be comfortable to sit on while outside. Our patio is open to the east, and also open in the nook to the north. So I needed something that was going to produce enough heat to keep the patio warm. We tried two other heaters (electric) before buying this one. They were horrible!I bought mine at home depot, and they have the fuel there. I think I have a different model (DuraHeat Convection Kerosene Heater Model DH2304), but it is the same amount of BTU's and the the same design, just looks a little different. This heater is amazing...we filled up half the tank, and have used it the last few nights to test it out. It heats up the whole area and keeps the heat coming! I plan on putting a sheet up in the nook using an expandable rod, (don't worry the sheet won't hang near the heater) I just want to try to block some of the cold air...

Does a good job, requires some maintenance
I have had one of these heaters for four years now, and use it in my 1000 square foot workshop (concrete floor and high ceilings make this space a challenge to heat). It does put out a considerable amount of heat, though it tends to be localized as there is no fan. Nearby the unit it gets quite toasty, and will raise the temperature of my shop 15 to 20 degrees after about an hour and a half. The secret to good performance is to use nice clean kerosene, and be sure it is not contaminated with water. It performs best on clear kerosene, but this is the most expensive fuel. I have had decent luck using red dyed kerosene (road tax exempt). I by it at a local bulk petroleum jobber and as of yesterday (April 5, 2010) I paid about 16.50, with tax, for 5 gallons in California. It burns clean, but I find I need to clean the wick a couple of times each season. I get a bit longer than 12 hours per tank, which is great. Make sure you change the batteries at the start of winter,...
