Lots of Pics and a Good (not great) Reference
I have been collecting hostas for about 3 years and have about 260 different varieties and over 300 hostas total. I'm a relatively new collector, but I do love my hosta books!I looked thru this book over the weekend.... I'll admit, it was more pic viewing than reading, but here are my opinions:Since this is a updated release of her old book, I will compare it to the previous book. The pics of newer cultivars are indeed nice. Yes, there are lots of repeats from the old Grenfell encyclopedia, but I didn't seem to mind. One thing that did bother me is that if she was referencing a sport of a plant, she'd put the pic with the parent's listing, even if it didn't fall into the heading of the chapter. I found this to be distracting. She and Shadrack (the co-author/photographer, who will be speaking at the 2010 National Convention) have clearly done a lot of their research in the states this round.... I think that's great! There was even a pic...

The New Encyclopedia of Hostas
A great book to all who feel overwhelmed by the vast selection of hostas on the market today. The book has individual, detailed descriptions and high quality color photos of many many hostas. The hostas are grouped by leaf color: green hostas, blue hostas, gold hostas,variegated-margin hostas and medio-variegated hostas. Each color-group makes a chapter in the book, and is of great help in organizing ones hosta-dreams.The text is superb, covering specific information for each cultivar: color and shape of its leaves and flowers, its growth-rate: slow or fast. The plant shape: open habit or a dense mound, its natural disease resistance, the hosta's origin and more.

Detailed, easy-to-read descriptions include growing tips, recommendations for landscape use, and suggestions for companion plants. Great book
This book is most helpful for the beginner and the "hostaholic". All the important cultivars are listed, plus many more expensive ones that the avid collector can strive to find. Lots of helpful tips and ideas on growing, displaying and collecting. It is a great field guide and great book to have on hand in your garden. AAAA rated by Cheryl's Gardens.

Excellent book for the purpose it serves
This is a wonderful little book. Excellent photos, and qutie comprehensive. However, it is not intended to be a treatise or all-inclusive book, so of course it doesn't have every last detail about every hosta every registered. It's portability is espcially appreciated, as it can easily be taken along on hosta hunting expeditions. Highly recommended.

Product Description

Boasting diverse leaf shape, size, color, and texture, it is no wonder that hostas continue to reign as the most popular perennial plants in North America. Not only are they the supreme plant for shade, but they also can be used in the landscape either as striking specimen plantings or as accommodating companion plants. Few pests bother them, and little maintenance is required, making hostas even more attractive to busy gardeners.

Each year a staggering number of new hostas are introduced. To assist gardeners and landscapers in selecting the right hosta for a particular situation, veteran plantswoman Diana Grenfell has teamed up with distinguished photographer Mike Shadrack in selecting 280 of the best hostas. Ranging from tried and true favorites to cutting edge newcomers bursting with potential, each plant has been handpicked for its superb performance in the landscape. An additional 545 hostas are briefly mentioned.

The Bookof Little Hostas
Nice small book that is easy to handle. The title says it all. The author covers pretty well everything a gardener needs to know: which cultivars to choose, how to use them effectively, how to group them, and care for them regarding diseases and pests. There are many color plates of individual hostas and groupings. Companion plantings are addressed as well.

Product Description

Hostas are irresistible. Their sculptural leaves and appealing textures make it difficult to stop at one, and it is easy to fill a garden with them. Help is at hand with this attractive guide to the popular new small hostas that take up less space and are ideally suited to container cultivation. They can be used on their own or with companion plants to make charming displays on the patio, porch, or even windowsill.

Many small hostas are simply scaled-down versions of classic hostas, while others offer distinctly new attributes in terms of color, leaf shape, and patterning. Like full-size hostas, small hostas can be upright, flat, or cascading; there are varieties that are full of substance, and others that are fine and delicate; there are green ones, gold ones, blue ones, variegated ones, and splashed ones. Some are better garden plants than others, and a valuable function of this book is to showcase the very best of the new introductions. Photographs of the hostas in garden settings show how admirably they respond to imaginative display in a wide range of situations including waterside, woodland, and rock gardens.

Beautifully illustrated and highly informative, this handpicked selection of diminutive hostas will inspire hobbyists and gardeners alike and provide inspiration for new planting schemes.

Just OK
I'm a self described hosta addict and I have decided to create a garden with a collection of mini hostas so I thought this book would be a good buy. It covers the basics and not too much else. The pictures are nice but not very inspiring which is what I was hoping for. My biggest complaint is that the descriptions of the hostas don't actually identify whether they are classified as small, very small or mini - you just know it has to be one of the three or it wouldn't be listed in the book.

Looks nice but ...
Personally I do not like reviews that are shallow and say nothing. I agree this book is well published, colorful, with a lot of good photographs. This is almost all. When I got this book a few weeks ago I was also delighted seeing such a nice book. When I started reading it I found that it is messy and descriptions of hostas are everywhere. I do not see a reason to divide hostas as those that are suitable for raised beds, separate for woodland, separate for container, separate for window boxes, etc, etc. And everything is hidden in a chapter entitled "Creating a place for little hostas". There are no special hostas for containers that cannot be planted in raised beds or woodland. Majority of hostas are from woodland edges and majority of hostas require similar planting conditions. Where we plant them is completely irrelevant.I expected to get a well organized book, where plants will be organized by specific criteria - for example size (width or height), or color, or...

Hostas inspires
'Hostas' by Rosemary Barrett is well written, thoroughly researched and a pleasure to read. The photographs are first-rate and will inspire anyone who is landscaping in the shade. The reference sections of the book seems very thorough - although I am no expert! This is a book that can truly be judged by its cover: well designed, well-produced and beautifully presented.

Pleasurable reading
It was a pleasure to read this book and worthwhile. However I am a person looking for more of a book that doesn't put it all on the line. She states in the book on pg. 27 that she does not like to write about pest and diseases however she does imparts some useful information for the novice hosta grower, but not nearly enough for an enthusiast. This is a good little book for the half hearted gardener. This is certainly not a book to hold as any type of real reference material.

Buy Hostas

Growing up I spent a lot of time in the summer swimming in Elkhart Lake (I'm sure this hosta is not named after this lake).  So when I saw the name on this hosta, I just had to have it no matter what it looked like.

‘Blue Mouse Ears’ is a descendant of ‘Blue Cadet’, which is a beautiful small blue hosta with very clean leaves and an elegant habit.   I fell for the very blue, very round, very rubbery leaves and the perfectly symmetrical habit.     As is the nature of hostas, ‘Blue Mouse Ears’ has given rise to a whole family of little mice. The miniature hosta that really took me over the edge was ‘Blue Mouse Ears’.

When I found out there was a hosta called 'Metallica' I just had to have it.  It could have been the ugliest hosta on this earth, and I still would have "needed" it in my collection. I've already admitted in an earlier post this winter that I have been known to buy a hosta just because of it's name.

Plant Sales- One of my favorite ways to save money on plants is to go to gardening club sales. Arrive early, with cash and some sort of box or container to put your plants in. If you see a plant you may be interested in grab it because things go fast at these sales. I buy two flats in different colors and plant them in intervals. I have been able to buy some unique plants for a fraction of the price I would pay elsewhere. See if a friend or neighbor will buy a different color and make some trades. This is the cheapest way to buy annuals. I have also dug up peonies, hostas, Solomon Seal, and more. I can usually pick up a flat of locally grown inpatients (48 plants) for $10 at Al's Garden Center (  http://www. The other great thing about these sales is  people are knowledgeable about plants. Craigslist- I have picked up some great plants from the free section of Craigslist. I have saved thousands by digging plants out of other people's yards. The only issue with this is they are 48 of the exact same plant in one color. I have these planted with annuals year round. For this reason I choose a few pots to plant the high end annuals in. I have two Babylon bowls on the pillars in front of my house.
