keep'em reading
An excellent collection of books from the "Horrible Histories" series, this set covers events from the Stone Age thru WW2. Often graphic in detail but presented in a sophomoric, humorous manner, these slim volumes offer a wealth of historical detail that teaches history while at the same time entertains. The reading level makes this series accessible to nearly all middle school students from low to high readers and the topic format should keep even the most disinterested history students motivated and on task. Not to be confused with text books, this series can certainly be supportive of classroom lessons helping to keep lower performing students on task and keeping their interest level elevated. It's common in my classroom to have students w/a "HH" in one hand and Wikipedia on their computer screens.Title of series clearly states that this series is NOT balanced nor is it meant to be. These are not text books, nor are they edited, censured, generic, white...

My kid loves these
My daughter loves Horrible Histories, the You Wouldn't Want to Be... series, the genre of history book that discusses atrocious events frankly, but in a light way. These are all good books, but they can cost a fortune to buy one at a time. The box contains a generous quantity of good reading at a reasonable price, at least it was reasonable when I bought it.This is good stuff for reluctant reader boys.

This work features all the foul favourites from the "Horrible Histories" series presented in a blood-curdling box with flip-top lid. It contains twenty books and includes the "Rotten Romans", "Terrible Tudors" and "Awesome Egyptians". Top to learn more

Engaging
My 10 year old daughter loves these and seems unmoved by what might seem to an adult an unnecessary emphasis on the violent, macabre and depressing. It's been a great way to get her to read about history. The 20 book set is very good value. She and my 7 year old also enjoyed the audio book versions but they are much more expensive.

Amazing, amusing, tragic and poignant all at the same time
As a 13 year old I can remember having to learn about Franz Ferdinand, The Black Hand Gang, allies and enemies, dates and times and other mundane facts that actually didn't mean much to me.In contrast, this book would enthuse any Year 7 pupil (and in my case 40+) to do a GCSE in History or just be grateful for our freedom and the fact that we can read a book like this!

Very interesting book for the teen age boys in our life. They are fascinated with the details of history and oh by the way they actually learn history from this book. There are many books in this series all of them are very helpful to encouraging reading by teenage men.

Horrible History Rocks!!
This book rocks! I would often find my middle schooler reading it before school starts in the morning. That says something!! Usually, all he will read is comic books.I love the cartoon feel to the book and the picture and captions are hysterical.

Fun
This whole series of books is just fun. There are recipes, cartoons, simple line drawings, vocabulary words and more. The books claim to be the "horrible histories" but they are still interesting and fun. My 9 year old has read these books and has asked for more.Enjoy.

Not exactly what I expected . . .but probably okay for some uses
I bought this for homeschooling my early elementary child. It is definitely for an older kid. It's funny and I'm sure he will enjoy it when he is older, but it's not really a stand alone history book. Definitely for use AFTER your kid understand the basics of the era, then it could add to the enjoyment of learning history.

Shrieks of laughter followed by "Hey listen to this..."
The "Horrible Histories" books deliver up historical facts regarding American, European and World history in such an entertaining way for 7-12 year-olds, that the children may never notice how much they're learning. During a family vacation to the U.K. we first stumbled upon these books in the bookstore of one of the castles we toured and bought a couple volumes at our then 9 & 12 year-olds' requests in order to keep them occupied in the back seat as we drove several hours to the next stop on our itinerary. Shrieks of laughter ensued from both children not long after we got underway, interspersed with, "Hey, listen to this..." The dreaded long drive passed without complaint from the denizens of the back seat, which was a welcome change, but by the time we arrived at our destination they'd each finished one book, were trading copies, and begging for more. We looked for more "Horrible Histories" as we continued our vacation, returning home to the U.S. with perhaps 8-10, which they...
