Excellent USA Road Atlas
I believe this atlas is simply the best one ever produced! Hema has done away with the old and tired state by state format in favor of using the same scale from coast to coast, tiled like the format in many city street atlases, and the cartography is crisp and clear, making this the most usable atlas I have found. We used it on a six week tour of the western USA and with its unique national parks section and suggested places to see and visit, it really enhanced the flavor of our vacation.

HEMA United States Road Atlas
We are planning to take this on an upcoming trip. I have received and perused the maps in this atlas and they appear to be excellent. It is a large format atlas, but the map quality and resolution benefit from this large size. If you like the way Delorme formats their Gazetteer maps (i.e., same scale for each page/map section, flip pages to see adjoining map sections, page numbers for maps adjoining on the top, bottom, left and right sides) you will love this format.I have not actually used the atlas yet, but I am planning to take it on an upcoming trip.

Product Description

This road atlas was created to be different from other road atlases on the US market in that it contains seamless, coast to coast mapping, rather than one or two pages per state. It is a bit like using a city or state atlas. You can cross the whole United States from east to west, just turning one page at a time.

The maps are consistently at a great driving scale of 1:1M, while the maps for the major cities and the busy Northeastern Corridor insets, are drawn at 1:250K. The Ultimate United States Road Atlas contains 50% more map pages than conventional products and is clear and easy to read.

Yachtsman's Planning Map
Everyone that has been to the Pacific, or everyone that would like to go, should have this map. It gives a better scale than the world maps, and makes a wonderful planning tool.On my boat I kept a copy of this map, laminated in plastic film for durability, on the dinette table. Every visitor to the boat remarked on the usefulness of the map, and immediately started telling me of favorite places on it that they had enjoyed.More than once, I used the detailed island maps on the back side for approaches to places where I did not have detail charts, as it gave me a good sense od where the villages were.

My guess is if he obtained some 50K maps for the same purpose he uses the Hema maps for he would be disappointed as while they may have more "detail" they don’t have the same information e. g. annotations of town services, phone numbers etc.

We consistently get 80,000Kms from our mud tyres, but we have them balanced and rotated every 8,000Kms, so with fantastic wear like this, it doesnt make sense to limit our 4WD capability by fitting all-terrain. There are all sorts of track conditions that you will encounter, so you need a tyre that is capable of handling all conditions.

My daughter has an iPad with WiFi and 3G and last night demonstrated an app called Avenza to me. It can be downloaded free and can use Goggle maps when it has access to 3G, but it can also use downloaded maps, such as Hema Maps. I had looked at the Hema and VMS GPS units with the maps, but for the 0 or so I can buy an iPad and use it for other things as well. These are fine for city and highway driving, but for touring, both on and off road they leave a lot to be desired, you get no sense of location and other features of the area you are travelling in. Have been looking at either a generic 7: GPS from... Having an extended diff breather is not a 100% guarantee of waterproofness and any crossing above your axles without extended diff breathers should mean a mandatory inspection. Any crossing at axle depth or deeper necessitates a checking of the diff oil for water contamination. So once you have successfully crossed to the other side and are on your way home, you dont need to give the water crossing a second thought, right.
