Great Book and Value
I was a classical pianist for most of my life and have recently gotten more acquainted with jazz, blues, rock and now gospel. This book gets you started with gospel patterns that will make you sound like a gospel pianist who has been playing for many years!This book gets you started on different patterns, which shows you how to incorporate them into gospel chord progressions and pieces with melodies such as hymns. They provide examples on how to incorporate what you learn in the book in chord progressions and hymns and provide exercises which you can practice. It also gives you information on pentatonic scales, chords, mixolydian mode, grace notes ect.The book gets you familiar with patterns used for slow gospel in 3/4 time and fast gospel in 4/4 time. This book is really good for those who can already read music and have a basic understanding of keyboard harmony. Great Basics and Practical Techniques
I play quite a bit, so my standards for what a book might be able to teach me are pretty high. I was pleased with this book because it doesn't keep everything so simple that even a seasoned player can't get something out of it. At the same time, it stays basic enough that someone who plays moderately well could play the examples and understand the theory with a little effort.One feature I liked was that Mr. Harrison would provide a very basic example with a chord structure and then proceed to "realize" it a couple of different ways so that you could read the notes that he might recommend you play. Because he gives you a few options of how he might play it, you really have the ability to pick up riffs and patterns that you might not otherwise.This is a well written and concieved book.

Marvelous details of the songs that keep us grounded!!
The book is absolutely marvelous. It is a reminder of the songs that I learned as a child that still are a tradition in the African-American Church. It is wonderful to know that I have an additional resource for preaching and teaching. I have chosen to share this with many members of our congregation. There are so many more songs that could have been used, but Ms. Warren seems to have picked the absolute best. God's richest blessings to you!!!

Makes My Heart Want To Sing!
How interesting it is to read some history on spirituals I've known all my life, but never understood the "spirits" they came from. Ms. Warren has opened a door to me and showed me the true beauty of this music. I am especially grateful to have the scores to each of the songs discussed in this book. I was also pleased to find the contemporary gospel section. This is not a sit down and read cover to cover kind of book, but a page flip to "Oh, yeah, I know this song!" kind of book.

This is a good book for the worshipper who wants devotions or to know the back story behind their favorite hymns. And the author's piano/vocal arrangements are for the most part playable and error-free.That being said, this is a selective not a comprehensive collection of Gospel Music. I found myself wondering "is this song in here?" looking and being disappointed that it was not included. Especially the older Spirituals (out-of-copyright). There should have been more of these, instead of the traditional Hymn section, which is duplicated in many Hymnals. If the Hymns had to be kept, it would have been instructive to see the original and the "gospelfied" versions in print, side-by-side. That and the lack of footnotes and skimpy historical info (definitely more on the appropiation of Spirituals in the Civil-Rights era and the controversy concerning Dorsey's Blues-Gospel style in the 1930's-40's) make this book more for the casual reader than a resource for the serious...

Traditional Gospel -- The Way It Should Be Done
This is a highly-listenable "sampler" of the traditional gospel songs many of us sing every Sunday. The standout tunes are the vocals by SAVAE -- just click on #1 "Amazing Grace." It's hard not to get those "good" chills. All of their hymns are acapella -- there's nothing that can match this unique sound. And as these folks are always in tune. There are also a lot of great guitar instrumentals of such standards as "I Love To Tell The Story" and "What A Friend We Have in Jesus." It's clean steel-string guitar -- the sort of tunes you'd like to hear during the offertory. And who can fight with the price on this sampler!

PLEASANTLY SURPRISED
I glanced at the cover of the album in this week's free offerings from Amazon, and almost "blew it off."But since I like a little Gospel here and there, I decided to give the samples a listen. WOW! There's some GOOD STUFF on this one!One of the artists is SAVAE - the San Antonio Vocal Arts Ensemble. 8 of the 15 tracks are theirs, all acapella. VERY nice.Ben Bowen King (5 of the 15) is apparently also a San Antonio "local." It's solo guitar work with a definite "Windham Hill" flavor, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. It's precision guitar work with FEELING, no doubt about it!Finally, there are 2 tunes by Gaelic Strings. "New Age-y", too? Sure... but, again, what's wrong with THAT?! Besides, you don't often hear "new agers" doing traditional gospel very often, do you?!All-in-all this is a very good album. And it's WELL-recorded - at LEAST as good, if not better, than a LOT of the hyper-compressed MP3's out there. It's...

Just what I was looking for.
This book has all the songs I was looking for, including the 'old favorites' and some up tempo songs I really like. You don't have to be the type that goes to church every time they open the doors, to play and enjoy gospel music. The songs in this collection that I like all have a distinctive melody and are fairly easy to read and play. Guitar players be advised that many are in the keys of B flat and E flat, so you'll have to use barre chords or transpose. Any one progressing from 'beginner' to 'intermediate' will find some familiar songs written in C.

Great for the intermediate to advanced pianist.
This is a great video for those who want to learn the playing techniques for gospel. Most gospel online courses teach what chords to play but give you little in the way of playing them for a gospel sound. Many gospel videos give you 1-1/2 hours of how to form chords, from beginning to intermediate, and maybe 15 minutes of advanced demonstration. This doesn't help either the beginner or the advanced player.Though the songs start out simply and a beginner could get a start with them, most of the video is for the fairly proficient player who wants to get some rhythm and licks to gospelize music. This gospel piano is much like boogie woogie piano and is a lot of fun.The written booklets are helpful and clearly written. They just take practice.I do wish that Dr. Ethel Caffie-Austin would put out a CD of her piano music. She's great.

Wish there were more like this!
Ethel Caffie-Austin is a fabulous pianist and she breaks it down easily so that players new to this style can understand the how and the why. A song is presented in its simplest form first, and then in increasingly ornamented versions with alternate harmonies, so in the end, you can figure out which version you would like to make your signature version.This set is for intermediate to advanced players, and the only criticism I have of this set is that it isn't indicated anywhere on the packaging (or in promotion that I've seen), but that doesn't detract from the 5 stars it very richly deserves. A beginning pianist would probably not be ready to play the pieces in this set, but what they hey, if you are a beginner, buy it anyway, watch it and PRACTICE like mad to get up to the level to play this. This set will INSPIRE you to get your chops together! You will need to be able to play in octaves, and to play full chords spanning an octave in each hand. It is also...

Not for Beginners
This DVD is a little advanced for me, but it deserves its 5-star rating. If you can play a bit and are dedicated enough to stick with it, you will learn how to "gospelize" simple melodies into full arrangements. Lead sheet and by-ear players who want to learn to get that funky gospel praise sound need look no further. I don't mind chipping away at this for a few years.Some hand independence and comfort with four-finger chords are pre-requisites to making the most of this, though you can use the DVD to learn these skills if you're patient and not afraid to practise hard. Caffie-Austin is a beautiful player and the video shows well what her talented fingers are up to. She has a wonderful voice and engaging persona too.If you are unsure about your skills, or are just beginning, I recommend you start with something simpler like Bradley Sowash and Scott Houston's "The Next Step" before tackling this.
