DA-DADA-DA-DA-DADA-DA-DA-DADA-DA-DA-DA-DAAHHH!!!
I remember seeing the Fudge on Ed Sullivan performing YKMHO and SHOTGUN and it blew my mind (to a teenaged guy, loud and heavy was reason enough alone). However, these guys were far better than Blue Cheer or Iron Butterfly - more in the range of early Deep Purple (who - inspired by the fudge, began to also perform "slowed down" versions of other people's songs - "Help" comes to mind). I read in the great book "Strange Brew" that when the Fudge played London, everyone, including the Beatles, Beck and Clapton were in the audience. In fact, Bogart and Appice went on to form the great power trio BBA with the Beckster himself!! Sure, Vanilla Fudge was over the top. But, can you honestly say that Sgt. Pepper wasn't? If you like your music heavy, the Fudge are great. Overdriven B3 organ, fuzzed out 335 and a monster drum kit. Tim Bogert, with his vintage precision was one of the best heavy bass players of his generation, right up there with Felix Papallardi and Jack Bruce. This collection...

The Fudge rocked!
I've been a fan of the Fudge for decades now. They were an amazing psychedelic cover band and this album is a good overview of four of their early LPs.My biggest disappointment, however, is that it contains the 45 single edit of "You Keep Me Hanging On", which edits the 1st half of the 2nd verse to the 2nd half of the 3rd verse, screwing up the lyrics terribly. Why this edit was ever made in the first place is a mystery to me, and why it has been perpetuated onto this collection is a mystery as well: the full-length track could have easily fit onto this CD.

We Played Vanilla Fudge
When I was young (gad, I'm 56 already), our band listened to this 33 rpm album over and over to mimick their renditions of previous hits, particularly "You Keep Me Hanging On," "Ticket to Ride," "Bang, Bang, You Shot Me Down"....Vanilla Fudge had a very unique sound, an experience (of course, psychedelic), with a suspenseful beginning in each song, building up to a dramatic climax....It was definitely listening music, whether stoned, tripping, or just fantasizing out to the infinite limits of the galaxy: definitely not dance music. The songs sound as original and different as the first time I heard the album nearly 40 years ago....LOL!

Creative, and innovative
Perhaps Vanilla Fudge is not for everybody because of their unique style and strange vocals, but the truth of the matter is that they were original. This writer sees the album as possibly the first progressive rock release. There are quasi-classical introductions and interludes throughout, predating Yes, Emerson, Lake and Palmer and the like. The originality is remarkable, despite the fact that they only covered well-known pop songs of the day. The Beatles Ticket to Ride, the Zombies She's Not There, and the Supremes You Keep Me Hanging On, are the songs that may interest fans of heavy metal. The Fudge gave them a slowed down, dramatic treatment with the heavy organ, active bass, pounding drums, and fuzzy psychedelic guitar. Their version of the Impressions People Get Ready is quite effective with the band's unique vocals, and church styled organ. The only possible weak spot would have to be Sonny Bono's Bang Bang. It has the feeling of a corny soap opera at times, but there are...

sonic psychedelia
How many bands could produce an album that reached number three on the national charts consisting entirely of covers of classic compositions ranging from The Beatles, to The Zombies, to Sonny Bono, to The Supremes? That's exactly what Vanilla Fudge accomplished in 1967, "the Summer of Love", with their debut album. The organ heavy/heavy organ arrangements remained on the Top 100 for a remarkable 200 weeks.'Vanilla Fudge' consists of Vince Martell on guitar, Mark Stein on organ and vocals, and the rugged rhythm section of Tim Bogert on bass and Carmine Appice on drums, who would in the 1970's team with Jeff Beck to form the minor supergroup (how's that for an oxymoron?) 'Beck, Bogert, and Appice'.This groundbreaking album opens and closes with John Lennon/Paul McCartney compositions. The bombastic 'Ticket To Ride' features organ riffs that sound like a skateboard running over the keys. The band made up for whatever was lacking in their musical expertise...

You can never have too much Fudge!
YES! Fudge is back! I'm not ashamed to admit that I was as excited to learn of the latest installment now as I was at the age of 9, when "Superfudge" was published. :-) And I was not disappointed. Fudge is one of Judy Blume's most endearing characters, a five going on forty year old whose quirky approach to life always ends up causing problems for his older brother Peter. This time around, Fudge's new obsession with money leads to more embarrassing misadventures, and indirectly to an unwanted family reunion with distant relatives. A new twist here is the addition of a younger cousin to the usual cast of characters, a four year old who may just be Fudge's troublemaking match. It's interesting to watch Fudge beginning to experience the same kind of frustration that Peter suffered through in the first three books. We can only hope that he doesn't learn from it TOO quickly! In response to the review complaining about the 21st century pop culture references that don't synch with...

Good Book
I'm 16 years old, but since I was such a big fan of Fudge, I just had to buy this book! Even though it's a children's book, it was really good and didn't fail to make me laugh out loud.

Double Fudge
As a fourth grade teacher, I love reading the Fudge books to my students. They love hearing what Fudge is up to. My students were so excited when Double Fudge was published. I recommend this book to anyone who likes to laugh. Fudge is always funny. In the story, Fudge is five (almost six) and Peter is in 7th grade. As everyone knows Fudge has his own way of seeing things--Fudge has not changed. Fudge is obsessed with MONEY. He is always talking, singing, counting, or trying to acquire money. He even creates his own money "Fudge Bucks". The Hatchers go to Washington D.C. to show Fudge how real money is created. The family meets their long lost cousins. The cousins come home with the Hatchers. Poor Peter, now he has to deal with Fudge, the Natural Beauties, and the new Farley Drexel Hatcher. Another Fudge, OH, NO!

The Fudge at their musical peak!
Whilst this might not be the band's "best overall album" (that honour usually goes to the previous album, "Renaissance"), I would certainly have to argue that this album represents the band's best playing. Obviously, there's not many songs on this disc, because the "Break Song" takes up about 23 minutes of it, but there's a lot revealing about the Fudge's music from what little you do get to hear. This album's release coincided with the release of the first Led Zeppelin album (early '69, and there were plenty of technological advancements taking place in the music world in the months between the release of "Renaissance" in mid-'68, and "Near The Beginning" in early '69. And at the point where better technology met the improved musical proficiency of EVERY member of this band, was no apparent than on this album. The most noticeable improvement throughout this album was definitely the guitar playing and guitar "sound" of Vinnie Martell. The two previous albums, you...

Near the end - or digging into Vanilla Fudge's history
Vanilla Fudge, one of the first 'american garage bands', if you permit me this short description...This band includes two musicians who also played with JEFF BECK (Tim Bogert and Carmine Appice) in 'Beck, Bogert & Appice', and in an hard-rock boogie-blues outfit named 'Cactus'.V.F. was most popular for their remake of the Supremes You Keep Me Hangin' On, taken off their excellent debut LP (1967). Their albums were not all equally satisfying. Instead, this LP from V.F., entitled "Near the beginning", shows the group near the end. At least, the end of their union under the Fudge banner (forget their 1984 reunion, "Mystery", it's not as good as the original). However, the merit of "Near the beginning" was that it captured the feeling of a live and heavy performance with fireworks in the organ and, above all, the guitar, bass and drums solo. At this point, you'll understand why Carmine Appice was considered one the most spectacular...

Over the Top
I bought this one and really liked it. These guys were local legends in the NYC area and unfortunately I was too young to check them out. I think if the Fudge had followed up the first LP with this instead of The Beat Goes On (ridiculous) or Renaissance (mediocre) they might've had a longer career. What made these guys interesting were their bizarre cover versions and this has two of the bizarrest: an over the top version of Junior Walker's Shotgun and their superb take on the Nancy Sinatra - Lee Hazlewood melodrama Some Velvet Morning. Good singing, good playing and a killer rhythm section. Folks that don't "get" the Fudge take rock music a bit too seiously. Testosterone laden fun stuff from the 60's.

Another Great Vanilla Fudge CD!!
I didn't have great expectations for this cd, but since I'm a fan I bought it. I was very pleasantly surprised!! They reworked some of my favorite Fudge classics to give them a more modern sound, and they sound great!! There are some new songs on this one as well. If you love Vanilla Fudge, GET THIS CD, you won't be disappointed. "Take Me For A Little While" and "Shotgun" are INCREDIBLE!!

OH...MY...GOD!
I have been a Fudgeaholic since I first heard the short version of You Keep Me Hangin' On on an AM radio in 1967. I have all their original albums, including Mystery, plus the Cactus albums, both Beck Bogert Appice albums, and even Tim Bogert's solo album, but I wasn't expecting much from this reunion album. I was so wrong. This is even better than the original recordings. Imagine you have only seen a VHS version of Star Wars on an old 13-inch TV, and then see a blu-ray version on a large HD TV with a home theatre sound system. That's what this album is like. Three of the four original members, playing the songs the same way they were originally recorded, but with better instruments, better recording equipment, and better production. The sound is richer, and the new songs are done in the same style that made the Fudge so phenomenal. Disc 1 is studio recordings, and Disc 2 is a live performance backed up by the San Fernando Valley Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra is mostly...

Product Description

Then and Now is an entirely newly recorded album on which the 2004 edition of Vanilla Fudge bassist Tim Bogert, guitarist Vince Martell, drummer Carmine Appice, and organist Bill Pascali (replacing original member Mark Stein) recreates its versions of songs that appeared on its Atco Records albums and singles of the \'60s. (On one track, \"Need Love,\" Martell is replaced by Teddy Rondinelli, as the San Fernando Valley Symphony Orchestra backs the band in a live recording.) The three new songs are the 1979 Rod Stewart hit \"Da Ya Think I\'m Sexy?\" (which Appice co-wrote with Stewart while working as his drummer) and, oddly, versions of two hits by turn-of-the-21st-century boy bands, *NSYNC\'s \"Tearin\' Up My Heart\" and the Backstreet Boys\' \"I Want It That Way.\" The performances are true to the Vanilla Fudge style, with slowed tempos, quotes from classical and traditional themes, and lengthy improvisation (eight of the 12 tracks run over six minutes), and the album certainly demonstrates that, almost 40 years into their career, the bandmembers retain their rock & roll chops admirably. beware
I read these books as a kid, too, and loved them. So, my 3rd grade daughter and I were reading them at night. We are reading "Superfudge" and it has several topics you may not be ready for. While most of the book is very funny and we had a lot of laughs, I was not laughing at the part about how babies are made. I also didn't enjoy the chapter, "Santa, who?" Just a warning to parents, they talk about not believing in Santa Claus. I know not everyone does, but we still do. So, I would wait to read these books until your child is a little older.

Disappointed in Judy Blume
I have been reading Fudge since I was a pre-teen, so I thought I was getting the classics when I purchased this. Was I wrong!! Many of the original words have been changed. For instance: The original book had Peter asking for an airplane and records for Christmas, but the new version has him asking for CD's and an MP3 player. How silly! I wanted the classic and I didn't get it. I am truly upset that these books have been changed to impress the younger crowd. Records and airplanes aren't that foreign of an idea for kids to read about. It's like changing the words to "To Kill a Mockingbird!"
