It paid for itself today!
I bought this to replace an "army-type" foxhole shovel that I bought at an Army surplus store. You know, the kind with the metal blade and wooden handle. That one proved useless, with its wooden handle breaking a few years ago, on its first use.I saw similar folding shovels at camping stores. Cheap ones with plastic handles. I knew better than to buy any of those. Then I saw this shovel here on Amazon, and hesitated because of the price. But I bought it, and am glad I did. I keep it in my pickup truck. Today, a few hours ago, my truck got stuck on an old country road. There wasn't a lot of snow, but there were "ice ruts" from the previous snowfall. If you live in northwest Indiana, near Lake Michigan, you probably know what I am writing about. Anyway, my truck got stuck in these ruts. This shovel was able to chop through the ice, no problem. The metal blade didn't break, and the metal handle didn't break. In fact, you can't even tell the shovel had been used,...

Great Tool
We were issued these E tools in the Marine Corps.. I was infantry and used it during the invasion in 03... beats the old E-Tool hands down... ligher sharper tougher and you can dig a fighting hole with it in no time not to mention actually cut down trees with it without fear of it breaking.. easy to put a new edge on when you dull it out.... I have and would trust my life with this product..

Great Shovel
This is one of the best shovels I have ever used. It is well constructed. Tough materials. Great size for a fold up shovel. Most shovels have a small blade, but this one has a large blade and its serrated, which is very shape and makes cutting through things very easy. It has two positions, shovel and pick. It goes into the ground with ease.I would recommend this shovel to anyone. It is worth the price.

About Gerber: A History of Innovation
Savvy. Moxie. Craftsmanship. Attention to detail. These are just a few of the company traits that have contributed to Gerber's emergence as a world leader in outdoor gear. Joseph Gerber started Portland, Oregon's Gerber Advertising back in 1910, and one Christmas, he hired a local knife-maker to craft 25 sets of kitchen cutlery as client gifts. The knives were so popular Mr. Gerber ultimately left his agency to launch Gerber Legendary Blades in 1939.

It makes sense, really. An idea man gets the idea of a lifetime and turns it into a major outdoor brand--one that commands respect among knife lovers and knife makers alike. And now that same high regard is spreading in new directions, in the form of many outstanding products such as tools, personal L.E.D. lighting, and more.

Top quality
The one I received was the AMES military issue shovel that I wanted. I've been looking for one of these online and was unclear because advertising does not always include the manufacturer. This was a great purchase, glad it was AMES! The shovel and carrier is excellent quality.

Exactly what I wanted
I ordered this item, and being a former service member with experience handling and packing E-tools, this foots the bill perfectly. the shovel extends smoothly from the handle, the locking ring screws down securely, and the case was free of any major wear or damage. My only complaint was that there was still dirt from the last hole that this shovel was used to dig. Otherwise, a fine product.

(5/5) Very well made sheath
So I have had a collapsible shovel sitting in my garage for ages now and it did come with a sheath. The only problem was, the sheath that originally came with the shovel was falling apart so I decided to search for replacement online.Well folks, here it is. I chose Gerber's sheath. Why? Because I know Gerber has been making consistent quality products (at least in my experience with them)So what do you get when you open the box? You get a simple, well designed sheath. It comes with a uni-directional snap on buttons along with ALICE and MOLLE fasteners at the back. Now you might ask, what is a uni-directional snap-on button; it's a button where you only have one way of snapping it on with ease, otherwise you'd have to struggle to get the button on. It took me a while to figure that out. Also, I should mention that this is a good feature since it prevents the straps from snapping off from any other direction other than that one direction to snap it on...

Good Sheath, Difficult Snaps
Good case, light weatherproof and seems durable enough. MOLLE compatible fit is proper however the snaps are murder to get to secure. Once you've attached it say to your backpack, it's very difficult to get counter-pressure on both sides of the snaps and they are extremely difficult to close/snap. The snaps to open and close the pouch are fine, but the MOLLE compatible strap snaps are a real bugger, it's not like they hold tighter being more difficult to snap closed because once you get one side snapped, the other side pops open from the curvature of the shovel inside. Otherwise it'd be just dandy. I'm going to go lift weights with my thumbs and maybe I'll bump it up a star. ;-)UPDATED: Another reviewer explains the snaps are directional and now it makes perfect sense, I added another star as this is better than I thought.

Great idea, marginal execution.
This seems to be standard, these days.Take a great idea, send the drawings over to China, find the lowest bidder who is able to make something 'shaped like your idea' for the lowest possible price, then produce it as cheaply as possible and bring it to market in the West with very little consideration for things like durability and quality. This is a good concept. I do some treasure hunting in remote places and the idea of a multi-tool with these functions appeals greatly to what I do. There are times when I need a shovel, need a small hoe, need a saw, need a pick... I sure wish there was a version of this tool made in America or Germany or Britain that I could pay $99 for and have it be solid quality that I could trust. Unfortunately, we have another great idea rendered from the junk workshops of the Orient, hamstrung from the get-go by needlessly low quality.Since there isn't a higher quality alternative to suggest, I have to grudgingly recommend this...

Give the little guy a break!
I love this thing. Yes, it's small- I would not want to fill sand bags with it. The surface of the shovel is about as big as an opened hand. For non-critical missions I would definitely pack this thing. I have used it as a kindling splitter, latrine digger, garden trowel, fire poker, ash scoop, tent stake hammer (axe has a hammer head on other end), and it keeps your hands clean and dry when making sand castles, snow-men... you name it. I keep it in my ever present bug-out bag and it is just a great little tool despite it's appearances. You can even stuff some junk in the handle for extra storage. The tools it has are a shovel(trowel), mini-axe/hammer, pick/spike which can go straight or at 90 degrees to the handle, and a funky little saw. I have not tried the saw... i'd estimate it could probably take down a 3" stump if you were determined... but the other tools are sturdy enough. It is pretty cheaply made, but the beauty of that is you can buy two instead of some other junky chinese...

Small, but excellent
This kit is pretty small. The spade is only about as big as my hand. The axe is also very roughly ground and won't chop anything. But, it fits neatly inside my back-pack and does the job (after grinding down the axe). I've actually grown to appreciate having the extra tools in a smaller kit. It is much more useful than my old combat shovel. It has definitely found a place in my camping gear.

for the price -- this thing is great...
While i'm certainly sensitive and empathehetic to the needs of of any US service personnel serving in the gulf (my thanks to you all)....just because amazon can't ship the shovel somewhere - -it shouldn't get a bad review in my opinion. For the price it absolutely can't be beat. If you want full blown 'survival" shovel like a pro climber would use -- then count on spending $100 or more......I just had to dig my car tires out of the snow the other day (I bought the shovel to leave in my trunk) and it was perfect for the job.

Be aware of what you are purchasing ...
For what it is, this shovel is very good. My only real complaint is that it is very dull; the "digging edge" could stand to be much sharper, as it is, it is not even rounded off. That's nothing that can't be fixed with an angle grinder, though :)As far as construction, it's extremely solid, rugged, and well made, pretty much what you'd expect from Gerber. What you should be aware of before you buy, though, is that it is *very* small. This isn't comparable to the GI "trenching tools", or the Coleman camp shovels you're probably familiar with. It is closer to a garden spade. Folded, it will literally almost fit into your pocket, actually will fit into a larger ski jacket pocket. The blade is smaller than my (adult male) hand, including fingers. I bought this to put in my trunk for digging my car out in an emergency ... it is just barely big enough to be useful for that purpose. So, if the size is appropriate for your needs, this is a great...

Sturdy and Compact
I bought this shovel to carry on my mountain bike and use to build trails. It's light and compact and comes with a handy bag. The quality of shovel is superb. I have used it a few weeks now and the metal has not shown any signs of fatigue. You can set the shovel blade at a right angle to the handle to use as a pick. The handle length is a little short to get great leverage though. The handle extends and locks in place with a spring loaded button. Unfortunately the button and spring were broken on my shovel when I got it. Not sure if that happened during shipping but it wasn't a big enough issue to be worth returning it.I would recommend this shovel for anyone looking for a quality compact shovel.
