Arguably the best Irish album ever
Ever since Dervish hit the scene they have paved new roads, expanding the limits of what Irish/Celtic music can encompass. Their rhythm section, made up of 3 players playing anything from Mandolins to Guitars in any given combination, is easily one of the strongest rhythm sections ever assembled. This serves as the harmonious canvas upon which the fiddle, wind, and accordion soar to roaring hights. These 6 players alone have the sheer talent to conquer. But with the delicate and completely honest voice of Cathy Jordan added to the mix, what we witness is a group of musicians whose power is unstoppable. This album is intense, humane, and honest. Even the fast jigs have an air of love and honesty about them. What distinguishes this album from other outings is the fact that it manages to mix extremely raw energy with incredibly structured compositions. The compositions here match and at times even outdo anything the chieftains could manage. This is the new appex of Irish music, period.

Couldn't wish for a better album
With this CD, Dervish, in my mind, became the top traditional Irish group today. It starts off with the title track, "Midsummer's Night," which serves as an introduction to the band. They begin by all playing a reel, and then each member takes a solo or plays a duet, before ending up all together at the end. High energy, fiery Sligo playing. One of the highlights is the song "Erin Gra Mo Chroi." Cathy Jordan's voice conveys the indescribable sadness of one who's left Ireland and knows he will never return. Tragic. They follow that up with a set of jigs-into-reels, called "Lark on the Strand." The jigs are slow, and start out delicately played upon the string instruments. The other instruments come in slowly and it gradually builds to an incredibly powerful sound, before leaping into a reel. Listening to this after the previous song can make you simply melt. The final song on the album is "Red Haired Mary." A light-hearted song...

freaking awesome
The combination of the stringy sound of the bouzouki/mandola and Cathy Jordan's singing make Dervish my absolute favourite trad band. Album is solid all through. Stellar bouzouki and mandola interplay. Of course, great flute, fiddle, guitar, and accordion playing. Cathy Jordan is indisputably my favorite singer in traditional Irish music, although her voice sounds a bit better on their earlier records. Some great faster songs (Red-Haired Mary, An T-Ull, There Was a Maid). Banks of Sweet Vildee is so beautiful. Just buy it.

There is no better intro to Dervish than this
Any song of Dervish takes me back instantly to my first trip to Ireland in the spring of 2000, when our tour leader played it on her cassette deck in the van. This is a band capable of generating enough power and energy and passon with their sets of jigs and reels to blow the roof off the barn. The very same band in turn can bring a tear to your eye and a lump to your throat with a heartbreaker like "I Courted a Wee Girl," a song that contains one of the most hummable melodies ever put on disc. In Ireland I bought one more CD of theirs, Midsummer's Night, which I enjoy very much, but this live album captures the Dervish vibe perfectly and is in fact also a top-notch recording--the quality of the sound is superb. I don't typically like live albums, but this is a delightful exception. I predict you will love the patter between Cathy and the audience, and you will buy other Dervish CDs, and you will seek them out when they come to your town to soak up a little of the Dervish...

Excellent live album of a top Irish group
This is an excellent live album by one of my favorite Irish traditional music groups, Dervish. All of the musicians are in fine form and playing excellently. Cathy Jordan's voice is of particular note here, as her soaring vocals in both Irish and English are the delight of the album. The tunes are also excellently performed. One really nice feature of this live album is that the talking is separated from the actual songs and tunes. This is useful if you don't want to hear the band talking, but I recommend that you listen to the inter-song banter at least once. Cathy says some really funny things. "Girls, if you have one man in your life, you'd better get another, so if one leaves you, you still have one left."Note: this was recorded shortly before the departure of Shane McAleer (to New Zealand, of all places) and is the last album of Dervish's with his fiddle playing.

Dervish's music was born in countless pub sessions and house parties in County Sligo in Ireland. On Live in Palma, recorded in Spain in 1997, the band members bring the intimacy and electricity of those informal gatherings to CD. Accordionist Shane Mitchell, flautist Liam Kelly, and fiddler Shane McAleer form the melodic heart of the band, and they negotiate the twists and turns of the liveliest reel with aplomb. Mandolin player Brian McDonagh and bouzouki player Michael Holmes provide the driving but still sprightly rhythm, and on selections like "The Trip to Sligo" and "The World's End," they create a complex harmonic framework that is contemporary but still rooted in the old traditions. But as good as the instrumentalists are, the star of the show is vocalist Cathy Jordan, who sings in both Gaelic and English. Her specialty is love songs, and the selections include "Ar Éirinn ní Neosfaiin Cé Hí," a rare ballad that turns out happily; "Edward by Lough Éirn's Shore," a tragic song that gets a lovely a cappella reading; and "Sheila Nee Iyer," a funny tune about a pompous suitor whose high-flown language drives away the girl he is pursuing. Dervish are one of the finest traditional Irish bands to emerge from the 1990s, and Live in Palma shows them at their very best. --Michael Simmons Top to learn more

Outstanding
This set of 2 CDs would appeal to most fans of traditional Irish music. I am not a huge fan of most Irish ballads but Cathy Jordan is awesome, I believe her voice would appeal not only to traditionalists but also to those with more mainstream tastes. Their instrumentals are great and for me were the highlight of this set. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars was I did not care for so much talking between songs. After repeated listenings the banter gets a bit tiresome, after all, who wants to hear them sing Happy Birthday to some guy named Felip again and again? Still, that's what the skip button on CD players is for, if you are looking for great Irish traditonal music done in a very accessible way, then look no further.

Travelling Show
Irish traditional music at its best. If you have an appreciation for outstanding musicianship, Dervish, along with Altan, Capercaillie, and Solas, to name a few, excel Gaelic music to an extremely high standard. I also recommend A Midsummer's Night.

Intriguing and bittersweet
Title explanation: A dervish is a person who gives up everything for Allah. In 1990, Hayat, from a Pakistani family, is in college. The death of his "aunt" Mina causes him to reflect on her story, and on events that occurred as he was growing up. It tells of his parents' less-than-happy marriage, and the different ways in which his parents shaped his views, as well as of Hamad's immersion in the Quran, with the resultant initial rigid set of beliefs that spur him to actions that he is ashamed of later in life.Mina Ali is his mother Irshad's best friend from Pakistan. After an arranged marriage to a husband who allows his mother to abuse her, followed by a divorce when Mina is in the maternity ward, Irshad and Naveed (Hayat's father) persuade Mina's parents to allow her and her 2-year-old-son, Imran, to stay with them in America. How do I describe this one without spoilers? As a reader who is always interested in other cultures, but especially...

An Open Mind
By taking us into a community that most of us don't know, except as stereotype, and seeing it through a child's eyes, this book has the vitality and vibrancy of something entirely new. American Dervish brings us into the heart of a Muslim boy in the Midwest who is trying, like all children, to make sense of the world he lives in. His immigrant parents are caught between assimilation and the pull of their culture of origin. The boy's own journey into emotional and spiritual discovery opens a door on absolutist thinking -- one of the more pressing issues of our time. The joy is that the door to transcendence is also opened, and the characters are so well realized that story feels entirely authentic. While this is an adult book I would recommend it to any parent looking for an excellent read for a teenager. It is a treatise on keeping an open mind.

Islamic Faith, American Culture, & Pubescent Yearning Collide
A Pakistani family--Naveed, the father (a physician); Muneer, his wife; and Hayat, their son--live a seemingly mundane life in Milwaukee. Then Mina, the life-long best friend of Muneer, and her son, Imran, come from Pakistan to live with the family after Mina's divorce. Mina meets Nathan, a colleague of Naveed's; Hayat's insecurities surface when he feels his own relationship with Mina is being threatened; and thus, the collision begins.......This book is exquisitely written! We are treated to glimpses of Islamic history and the Quran, enmeshed with the superlative plot. Strong character development is @ the helm of this terrific tale. Ayed Akhtar is a DIALOG GENIUS. The dialog so aptly evokes the personas of the cast of characters that their personalities are virtually tattooed on their foreheads. I can't remember when I last encountered such incredibly concise, descriptive dialog.POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT: The author leaves adequate possibility for a sequel at...

Product Description

Hayat Shah is a young American in love for the first time. His normal life of school, baseball, and video games had previously been distinguished only by his Pakistani heritage and by the frequent chill between his parents, who fight over things he is too young to understand. Then Mina arrives, and everything changes.

Mina is Hayat's mother's oldest friend from Pakistan. She is independent, beautiful and intelligent, and arrives on the Shah's doorstep when her disastrous marriage in Pakistan disintegrates. Even Hayat's skeptical father can't deny the liveliness and happiness that accompanies Mina into their home. Her deep spirituality brings the family's Muslim faith to life in a way that resonates with Hayat as nothing has before. Studying the Quran by Mina's side and basking in the glow of her attention, he feels an entirely new purpose mingled with a growing infatuation for his teacher.

When Mina meets and begins dating a man, Hayat is confused by his feelings of betrayal. His growing passions, both spiritual and romantic, force him to question all that he has come to believe is true. Just as Mina finds happiness, Hayat is compelled to act -- with devastating consequences for all those he loves most.

American Dervish is a brilliantly written, nuanced, and emotionally forceful look inside the interplay of religion and modern life. Ayad Akhtar was raised in the Midwest himself, and through Hayat Shah he shows readers vividly the powerful forces at work on young men and women growing up Muslim in America. This is an intimate, personal first novel that will stay with readers long after they turn the last page. Top to learn more

It's finally here!
I first heard Dervish at the Cambridge Folk Festival and had to buy this CD, which was out in the UK nearly 2 years before being released here in the US. From then, I have worked backwards through the Dervish catalogue. For fans of Dervish's previous albums, I can tell you that it only gets better. Cathy Jordan's voice shines throughout, but especially on "Fair-Haired Boy" and Bob Dylan's "Boots of Spanish Leather". On the instrumental side, the highlights include "Jig Songs" (a medley of three pieces) and "Swallows Tail". There is also an excellent rendition of "Soldier Laddie". This Irish folk standard has a rather repetitive song structure, but Dervish incorporate wonderful variations in both the vocals and the instrumentation that keep the song lively all the way through. For those readers who are unfamiliar with Dervish, I can only urge you to buy this CD...as well as their previous work. The group has firmly established...

Dervish does it again
Top-flight 7-piece Dervish from Sligo in Ireland have been ultra-consistent in their recorded offerings and this new album, four years in the making, is no different. Rousing dance tunes like The Banks of Lough Gowna, lovely songs like The Fair Haired Boy by Brendan Graham and evocative airs like O'Raghalligh's Grave are arranged, played and sung with the greatest finesse and warmth of feeling. Cathy Jordan's distinctive and expressive voice is backed by fiddle, mandola, flutes, guitars, accordion, harmonica, bouzouki and other instruments. Songs are in both English and Gaelic and include The Lag's Song by Ewan McColl, Boots of Spanish Leather by Bob Dylan, The Soldier Laddie, and a "Tune of the Munster Pipers" from the 1860s. Instrumental medleys drive forward with a sweeping momentum that is totally exhilarating. Dervish are a cut above the ordinary and always work hard to present Irish traditional music with a touch of pizazz, while holding fast to the age-old true Irish...

I still love Dervish, but this is not their best CD
I would hate to think people interested in Dervish due to their reputation for traditional Irish Music would start with this album. To avoid mistakes, I am saying there are great tracks on this album, and all of the musicians are top shelf Irish musicians. I absolutely love this band. However, I would consider their best albums to be "Decade" for people that think in that American way (direct, straight to the point, music only). If you think in that lovely Irish way, Irish music is a part of pub culture to be enjoyed with friends, families, relatives, pets and few strangers soon to be friends. In that case "Live in Palma" two CD set has all of the proper introductions, not to mention an invitation to sing Irish Gaelic Karoake. Don't forget the stout when listening. They followed these CDs with "Midsummer's Night." The CDs previously mentioned can be played straight through without exception to excellencet tradional music. They also have a VHS tape availabe at their website of...
