Fascinating!
Without the benefit of scuba diving classes and a collection of rented equipment, most children will not grow to see the coral reefs of the world in person. Brought vividly to life in the imaginations of children through the major animated film Finding Nemo and the short, live action segments that make up "Come See the Sea" on children's television programming, the coral reefs of the world serve as a sticky point of interest to delve into the life cycles of the creatures who make this fascinating ecosystem their home.In Coral Reef - part of the One Small Square series for six to nine-year-old children, an in-depth, vividly illustrated journey travels through a small portion of the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Australia. Focusing in on an three-dimensional section of reef measuring four feet to a side and extending down in a rectangular column roughly twice that in length, series author Donald M. Silver guides young readers through the intricacies of reef flora,...

i did not get what this book was about before buying, but now that i do i love it even more
I had a totally different conception of what this book was going to be (don't even ask, im kinda embarrassed now just thinking about it). other reviews are right, this is one of the most beautifully illustrated books ive ever seen! The level of detail is incredible. The names of the "chapters" are cute, and is the whole darn thing. I bought it for a 4th grader who love nature but has some mental challenges and can't read for himself very well, if at all. Hopefully his parents will take the time to read all the factoids included in each "level" of the square. I think he will love knowing about all the different marine life and find it fascinating. The book will definitely intrigue readers of all ages.

Lovely Primer for adults and children about to go reef snorkelling
This is a lovely graphic, as well as informative, little primer on the wonders that wait you if you happen to be going on a family vacation that involves reef snorkelling or just want to explore the underwater in your child's mind's eye. We were lucky enough to go "Snorkelling on the 'Barrie" (the Great Barrier Reef), off Cairns - Michaelmas Cay and Hastings Reef as well as off a platform near Green Island. My almost 10 year old was just about fit to be tied by the time we got our gear on and he just wanted to go meet these beautiful creatures he had been reading about. Real life potato cod "Gertrude" and a lovely "Maori Wrasse" named 'Wally' and other reef life are stunning but also very evident is the damage that so called eco-tourism is actually doing to the Barrie and reefs just like it - lots of dead coral. The book addresses these issues simply too but the Australians seem to have a better understanding of the yin-yang of eco-tourism and sustaining livelihoods of people who care...

Used this book as a textbook for Coral Reefs class
I've taken or served as teaching assistant for a number of classes on coral reef ecology, and we've never had a good, comprehensive textbook that was suitable for undergraduate students. I was excited to see this book this year, particularly since it appeared just before I taught my own undergraduate class on "Ecology of Reefs, Mangroves, and Seagrasses". We've read a number of the chapters on coral reefs, corals, and human impacts. I do wish there was more information on the organisms of the coral reef - algae, invertebrates, mammals & reptiles, as I had to find other sources for that. However, it is well-organized information, clear, and very up-to-date. I would use it as a textbook if/when I teach the class again and recommend the series to others teaching about the biology of habitats. We also used Hogarth's (2007) book in the series on mangroves & seagrasses.

Well written, informative, relevant to current developments
This is a well written introduction to coral reef biology, potentially useful for both a senior-undergraduate course or any diver wishing to learn more about the coral reefs she is hovering above. The book treats many aspects of reefs, from the main reef builders, the abiotic environment, reef microbiology and the world of coral reef fishes. Most figures are black/white, but the book also contains some color plates. It goes into a good amount of detail, and covers some very recent scientific studies, but at the same time is written in a readable style. Often text boxes cover special topics, such as the crown-of-thorns starfish. What I really appreciated is the significant part dedicated to conservation issues and the damage done to reefs by everything from overfishing, the creating of artificial islands, sewage run-off, to global warming and ocean acidification. When treating these subjects, the authors don't fall into the all-is-lost mode, but also outline how...

Fantastic!
I received the book in the mail and it is in great condition for the class that I am taking. There are a few highlighter marks in it, but I plan on adding onto that anyway. The book is great!

Product Description

Coral reefs represent the most spectacular and diverse marine ecosystem on the planet as well as a critical source of income for millions of people. However, the combined effects of human activity have led to a rapid decline in the health of reefs worldwide, with many now facing complete destruction.

This timely book provides an integrated overview of the function, physiology, ecology, and behaviour of coral reef organisms. Each chapter is enriched with a selection of 'boxes' on specific aspects written by internationally recognised experts. As with other books in the Biology of Habitats Series, the emphasis in this book is on the organisms that dominate this marine environment although pollution, conservation, climate change, and experimental aspects are also included. Indeed, particular emphasis is placed on conservation and management due to the habitat's critically endangered status. A global range of examples is employed which gives the book international relevance.

This accessible text is intended for students, naturalists and professionals and assumes no previous knowledge of coral reef biology. It is particularly suitable for both senior undergraduate and graduate students (in departments of biology, geography, and environmental science) taking courses in coral reef ecology, marine biology, oceanography and conservation biology, as well as the many professional ecologists and conservation biologists requiring a concise overview of the topic. It is also of relevance and use to reef managers, recreational divers, and amateur naturalists. Top to learn more

Brilliant Photography Illustrates Reef Ecology
A cousin of mine travels around the world to dive on the most beautiful reefs. Encouraged by that, but not being a diver, I've made it a point to snorkel and take glass-bottomed boats to look at reefs whenever they are present. All along, I've wondered why he found the skin diving to be so wonderful. Now, I know. Coral Reefs exposes a world of vivid and bizarre colors and shapes that I had never imagined could exist. Having also listened to more talks about coral than I care to remember, I was also pleasantly surprised to learn a lot more than I knew before about the development of the reefs and the ecological challenges they face. Of the many beautiful books focusing on nature's wonders that I have seen, I would have to rank this one near the top. At its modest price, this book is also a good value. If you only buy one nature book this year, buy this one!!!!!After you finish the book, why not take a moment to plan how you can see one of the reefs close up on a future...

Best photos
I own several books on coral reefs. This one is smaller and a paperback, but it has the absolute best photos of reefs. Stunning colors and an amazing variety of sea life in most photos. Wish it came in hardback. It also shows the sad truth that some reefs are dying. We need to stop that from happening.

Marine biologists believe coral reefs existed 400 million years ago, when dinosaurs roamed the earth. Today this active environment is home to about 20,000 kinds of brilliantly coloured corals, plants, and animals-more sea creatures than are found anywhere else in the world. The Great Barrier Reef in Australia is so large that astronauts can see it from outer space! But what is life like in a coral reef? What do corals eat? Why are corals more colourful at nighttime? Children will enjoy Gibbon's informative text and clear, detailed illustrations on this journey into the unique lives of coral reefs. Top to learn more

A fascinating, beautiful journey.
This book is gorgeous, that pretty much covers it. The illustrations take the reader on a journey over and around a coral reef. Even without the words, I could easily follow the story. I love the idea of a book taking the reader on a journey to somewhere they may never be able to go in real life. This suits my lifestyle of armchair adventuring. The text does add a great deal of information, a little too much for a read-a-loud I discovered, especially when the students kept interrupting to share things they knew. The students definitely found the bright and colorful illustrations appealing, as did I. It took some of the students a little time to figure out why the coral reef was growing in a building, but once they figured it out they really got into it. This is a great book for sharing, there is so much to share and talk about. I highly recommend it for those who have any interest in the natural world. If you haven't read Chin's Redwoods as well, I recommend that one also.

Darling it's better down where it's wetter, take it from me
First things first. Let's just get something out the way here before I go any further. I am not exactly a disinterested party when it comes to this book. No, I don't know the author personally (though we did meet once). No, I never saw an early manuscript or offered helpful criticisms when the text was still young and unformed. No, I am not a coral reef myself. See, the thing about this book is that it takes place at a very specific location. The bulk of the story happens when a kid enters a library. And not just any library. My library. And by "my" I don't mean my local branch. I mean my employer. So you see, I'm not sure I can be trusted to review this with an impassive eye. There's something that makes a gal go all giddy when a book features her place of work. Never mind that Chin has already established himself as a master of the magical realism nonfiction form (see:...

love it
I bought these as a bath toy for our almost 3 year old. No, they don't float, but that doesn't bother us. I was so sick of all our bath toys being used to pour water out of the tub or squirty toys which fill with mold I could scream. Our son had a ton of fun with these in the bath, then brought them downstairs to have rides on his hotwheels, and then brought them to bed to sleep with him. This is our third set of "toobs" and we have been happy with all of them.

Great little play package...
I used this set for a cake topper as well, but I have to say that it is a really great representation of reef life. It would be really fun to teach kids about the different fish and sea life that are on a coral reef. This set would be great for that. It even includes a "nemo" to get their attention!

Boring!!!
My kids usually love to play with small figurines, etc. This toy was a total flop, however, and hasn't really been looked at since the day they received it as a gift...definitely would not recommend.

“I’m seeing shipments of coral in such large quantities that it’s potentially devastating entire reefs. Lifeless starfish and expired crabs still dangled from the skeletons, aquatic detritus indicating the coral had been part of a thriving reef. “This was a substantial part of a reef. The former reef material was bound for the curio trade, an off-the-radar market that spans from low-end, roadside shell shops to posh interior-design companies. Over the next three days, Lunz and a handful of colleagues sorted the coral piece by piece to ensure that the species listed on the boxes matched the species listed on the shipping documents. The shipping containers and the repeated pattern of mislabeled coral are now at the center of a federal investigation being led by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service that could result in criminal charges and stiff financial penalties against the... Lunz was called in to inspect each shipment, and each resulted in the seizure of misidentified coral. For many species, once a year, shortly after sunset on the night of a full moon, masses of coral simultaneously release sacs of reproductive cells, turning the water into a cloudy primordial soup of sperm and eggs. Most people don’t even know coral is an animal. The rubble was actually a giant batch of stony coral — an order scientifically known as Scleractinia — an exceptionally fragile animal that’s vital to the health of the world’s oceans.

In the meanwhile I want to ask your opinions of some logo designs/fonts for this project I'm working on. I'm designing a logo for Expedition Kamchatka. However, it is a rather remote place, so not many people have ventured into Kamchatka since it was opened.
