finally!! exactly what I have been looking for!!!!
I actually was not looking for this book, but instead stumbled upon it, because I had given up on thinking that such a book existed: a book that combined both contemporary design principles and technical skills for contemporary ceramics. As a university teacher I have been surprised at the number of technical books available for ceramics (that remain mainly unchanged over the years) and yet literally no books that address design, while the contemporary world of ceramic design is exploding right now. I love this book and am now going to require it now for beginning ceramics students. Excellent material on brainstorming and sketching too. Oh, and really gorgeous photos and illustrations.Thank you!

Design for Potters
This book is a real eye opener for those working in clay. It provides information about design that any potter should know as they learn to throw or do handbuilding. Many aspects about useful objects are outlined with methods of doing thoughtful designs. It is unlike any books providing instructions in the techniques of assembling objects of clay. And, for that reason belongs on a lot of potter's book shelves.

Featuring practical exercises for each stage in pottery design and construction, this beautifully illustrated book is mainly intended for students planning to develop a career as professional ceramic designers--but ambitious amateur do-it-yourselfers will also find plenty of inspiration and solid instruction. A great book for those interested in ceramic design
This book is a great resource for ceramic artists who are interested in improving their design process. It would also be helpful for beginning industrial design students.I would caution potential purchasers that this is not a 'how to make pottery book'. If you are looking for a book on how to make your own pottery this is not what you are looking for. If you are looking to better understand and design your work including integrating form, shape and color. Than I am sure you will get a lot out of this book.

    Awesome!
I just received this book and it is absolutely one of the best Raku books going! It is well laid out with many high quality pictures showing the technique or concept being presented. Covers much more than raku with many other firing techniques. Has a fantastic picture gallery with fine examples of pieces created with the techniques in the book and a glaze recipe section with references back to the pieces the recipes were used on. A must have for anyone interested in raku or any of the related firing techniques!

    Alternative Firing Techniques
What a wonderful book. As a ceramic sculptor, I appreciate the Raku, Pit, Barrel and Saggar firing methods. It gives one enough of the technical details of the how-to's of each of the firing methods (and how to build a raku kiln, and barrel and pit kilns) to get one started. It also "fires" up one's imagination to expand the contents of the book and to push your work to another level. This book presents beautiful examples of what "Alternative Firing Techniques" can produce.

    Product Description

Ceramicists searching for new ways to fire their creations now have a wealth of options. Authors James Watkins and Paul Wandless, along with a group of distinguished artisans, demonstrate in detail how to build low-cost, low-tech, yet high-quality kilns. The plans range from an easy, affordable, and versatile Raku Kiln to a unique wood-fueled Downdraft Stovepipe Barrel one. These clever devices make it possible to produce rich surface effects from alternative reduction firing techniques. In addition to showing the basic procedures for using each kiln, easy-to-follow directions for many fast-fire methods unfold in color photographs: You’ll see how to achieve terra sigillata surfaces with direct chemical application, and how to do traditional crackle-glaze raku and smoke finishes.

emphasis on firing techniques, not kilns
This is a very worthwhile and contentful book, just not what it seemed from the brief desciption. Hopefully this clarification is helpful to others:This book's editorial description, along with the title, seem to suggest that its focus is in how to create various homemade ad hoc kilns (for those that don't have ready access to a kiln already). It talks about kiln building, and never uses the word raku.Basically, however, this is a raku book, with lots of interesting variations. "Barrel" and "pit" kilns (mentioned in the subtitle) turn out to be just more forms of raku, rather than new kinds of homemade kilns. It contains many creative firing ideas with wonderful results, generously shared by a number of contributors. Along the way, of course, they do tell you how to put together firing chambers for these firing techniques. So it does provide some alternative kiln construction guidance with variations, but not the quantity I was expecting. And the firing...

    Fantastic Pottery Book!
This is a great pottery book that conveys information in a manner that is easy to understand and follow. This is one of the text books utilized by the wheel throwing classes at Coastal Carolina University. For me, it is easily my favorite and I refer to it often. I highly recommend this book for all levels of wheel throwers.

    Great, useful book!
If you're looking for techniques to try as you work in clay, the recently published Surface Design for Ceramics may be just your cup of tea. No how-to book showing how to execute someone else's ideas, New Hampshire Institute of Art Ceramics chair Maureen Millls' book exxposes the reader, with helpful detail, to a wide range of decorative processes. Close-up photographs show her hands at work demonstrating at every stage of making, from freshly-thrown clay, through biscuit to post-firing. Her finished pieces are fine illustrations of process. The layout of pages is balance and attractive. While the tools employed are simple, possibilities for their use are many, as are the examples of pots and details of pots showing how the effects are achieved. I found myself drawn in, wanting to know which tools and techniques were used, and in what sequence. There is plenty of explanation.Mills' own pieces are augmented by photos of other artists' work, both contemporary...

    Inspiring
I found this book full of great ideas and techniques. I have been a "potter" for 12 years, and sometimes find myself in creative ruts. This book came to me at a time I really needed to explore some new ideas. There is nothing "new" in pottery. But there are new ways to present techniques and I think Maureen did this very well. She works in slip-trailing like no one else I've seen. I was really excited by her latex resist techniques as well. Since receiving this book as a gift, I have tried several of the decorating techniques. I've been energized to try new things, and share them with my students as well. This book is a great addition to most potter's libraries, something I look forward to browsing for many years to come.

    Disappointing
I'm a potter. I love Lark books and refer to them often for ideas and techniques. I was looking forward to this book and pre-ordered it several months ago. It arrived today and I have to say I was very disappointed with it. It's not a bad book but I found it uninspiring. There's really nothing new in it and I've seen all of the information presented in other books in a much more dynamic way. I was hoping for more.

    Lots of fuel for thought
Contains many interesting tips and tricks and plenty of ideas to stimulate one's creativity. However I felt some techniques glossed over some of the potential trouble spots and did not fully explain them. No doubt to cram in 250 ideas. Nice addition to a potter's library even though there was a lot of repetitive information that was in Atkins' book, Handbuilt Pottery Techniques Revealed.

    Great ideas and techniques
The techniques represented were unique. There were many examples of other clay artists works. Ms. Pozo presented step by step photo processing for each technique. She started with clay basics and moved forward through firing ranges, shrinking, warping, cracking and glazes. She gave excellent usable information on the installation processes.

    Clay person
This is an essential book for anyone undertaking clay tile making. Many claim to be that essential book, but based on what is available in my local library, this one really is it. Her projects and those of a range of others included in the book are both great illustrations of the many processes involved and useful for stimulating the creative ideas of her readers.I'm sick of renewing my library copy. I'm gonna buy my own.

    Good solid reference book
This book has a little of everything. If you are just starting out in tile-making it would be an excellent choice. There are a LOT of different decorating techniques, and a very wide range of applications. The book is laid out well, with plenty of photos, so you can see finished examples of the techniques being described in the text below on the page. It would be an excellent beginner-to-novice book.Personally, I prefer Frank Giorgini's "Handmade Tiles", because it has more technical information, glaze recipes, firing information, etc., but if I were starting out to make tiles on my own and taking them elsewhere for firing, I think Pozo's book would be a better choice.
