The Powerful Eroticism of Cecily Brown
This is a particularly rich Rizzoli publication for Gagosian Gallery devoted to the art of the one whose name forms the title of this monograph - CECILY BROWN. Brown is a young painter whose style falls somewhere in the transition zone between abstract expressionism and figurative painting: few artists have succeeded to this level as well, a level that includes Francis Bacon and Lucien Freud, Jean Rustin and Willem de Kooning. She manages to cast thick layers of paint on her canvases that in and of themselves are quasi three dimensional creations of wildly imaginative combinations of color, but she doesn't stop there. Sometimes buried in all of this action painting are stories of erotic encounters, barely discernible until the eye finds the subjects: the cover of the book is the riotously sexual `1000 Thread Count' in which the viewer must invest time to find the core images in this lushly colorful cacophony of brush strokes. Brown’s paintings can feel like listening to an indie rock band of white boy legacied Harvard com/lit majors singing about sadomasichism and buying smack from young Moroccan boys. Brown, even when working with easily identifiable imagery, doesn’t work with a picture/window model of painting. I get a sense that Brown’s intention is to make an object that looms out in to a viewer’s mental space, that doesn’t exist purely as a thing unto itself. It’s also doubtful that I would get excited about Brown’s paintings if they didn’t have that polite, learned-spontaneous quality. and some similarity in facture (though it should be pointed out that Brown uses mostly smallish brushstrokes, there’s not the variety of mark that one sees in a deKooning or Mitchell). I think Brown’s subtle polemics are much more interesting that the sort of formal innovations that she’d be engaged in if the brushwork was less received from earlier loaded-brushers. I feel like I am arguing against them more than I really want to. the work is strong and legit…but something is bugging me, or maybe not bugging me enough. a question she answered with a reference to some sex act or other…all well and good, and a question that would have been answered by really looking at the picture. Like a person, like a relationship, but unlike how I take a lot of AbExers who seemed to search for (however frustratedly) rather than deny absolutes. And she doesn’t really seem to make a painting that exists as ineffable object.
