Excellent look at the Begonia family
I found this text to be very useful. The scientific classifications, including leaf shape, texture, stem placment and flower formation were introduced in an approachable and engaging manner. The section on pests and diseases that are problems for begonias was very useful. Learning the origin and natural habitat of various begonias really helps with their successful cultivation. I did not find the more scientific aspects offputting at all. The text is written in a way that I found very appealing, and the large number of color photographs make it visually rich. This is a very thorough and appealing look at the amazingly diverse begonia family.I would recommend this to anyone who wants to become more familiar with this fascinating plant family. For those of us with an acknowledged interest (ie, member of the American Begonia Society here) this book is a real treasure.

Text Reference on Begonias
I would give this book top rating if I had had a scientific interest in the history of begonias. I bought it thinking it would have a lot of practical cultivation and propogation tips and it disappointed me in that respect. It's a very thoroughly written and documented botanist's book - not really targeting the home gardener.

I'm not a fan of giving out 5-star reviews usually.....but Begonias is a fabulous cd.This is more of a Thad Cockrell album than a Caitlin Cary album. Thad takes the lead on most of the vocals, with Caitlin lending support. They sound wonderful together.The music itself is very engaging. This isn't the usual country-pop music, which is mainly played on the radio nowadays.Begonias sounds like it could have been recorded in the golden age of country, back in the 50's or 60's. It has a vintage feeling to it.Go buy this album and support great music. It's worth the full retail price.Begonias is about as authentic and as American as good music can be. One of my favorite records of the year.

Caitlin Cary + Thad Cockrell + Brad Jones = 5 Stars
I love this cd! It is beautifully written, played, sung and produced. It works as soothing background music, as well as it does in your earphones. Thad's voice is a high pitched world of hurt, Caitlin's is a warm heart. It doesn't seem like it would work, but it does, wonderfully, whether they are singing as a duet, background, harmony, whatever, they sound GREAT together. The production of Brad Jones is perfect-the musicians are excellent, and he doesn't get in their way. The vocals shine bright around the music, and they compliment each other in a way that is often missing on some recordings. There have been a lot of comparisons to the duets sung by George Jones and Tammy Wynette. Thad and Caitlin do not sound like George and Tammy, but their voices blend just as well together as George and Tammy's did, and these songs are exactly the type of songs they used to record. If you like the more traditional country sound of the '60's and '70's, do yourself a favor-buy this now,...

Album of the Decade!
As a rule I do not write product reviews, but this album demands to be the exception to that rule. If you are looking for honest, moving, life changing music, you must own this album.I would buy this album again, even at twice the price. I have listened to it over and over, and have to say that from the first listen on, I have been unable to find a weak track.As my words cannot do justice to this wonderfull album, I will leave my review at that, but please, please do yourself a favor and buy it. You will not regret it!

Very good, but not what I wanted.
This is a very good, concise book covering history, cultivation, propagation and even hybridizing methods of tuberous begonias. When I purchased this book, I didn't know the difference between tuberous and non-tuberous begonias so I was a bit disappointed to discover that begonias of my primary interest, the non-tuberous type, are barely covered. This review is mostly a warning to those who might not know the difference. The focus of the book is tuberous begonias which are primarily grown for their flowers (and are well-represented by the excellent photos). The author includes a brief chapter covering the various types of non-tuberous begonias (which interest me because of their foliage) and short propagation notes. Non-tuberous begonias include varieties which are cane-like (including the "Angel Wing" varieties), thick-stemmed, rhizomatous, trailing-scandents, Rex and semperflorens (wax leaf - common bedding begonia). Year after year, it seems like there’s always someone coming to the shop who wants to buy the antique plant. “I don’t know why we never took cuttings from it until recently, but now we do and we rely on it for all our new potted begonias,” Havey said. “I never said it out loud, but many a time I wondered, `What’s that old plant doing sitting by the door,’ ” Gurney said. For years it was a houseplant, then, when the Havey family opened a greenhouse plant business in 1980, it was moved to a new location in the greenhouse. FRUITLAND, Md. (AP) — Never mind that her limbs are lanky in one place, beefy in others, or that she’s 80-plus years old — there’s still plenty of life in the old girl. Now Havey and Gurney routinely take cuttings from the branch tips of the 80-year-old former houseplant. When slipping by the plant one day, assistant Andrea Gurney broke off the tip of a branch and decided to take cuttings from it. The small sections of leaves and stem were trimmed of excess foliage and dipped in a root producing hormone and potted. “I got this from my late mother-in-law and she originally got it from the Nilsonn’s Flower Shop in Pleasentville, N. Y. She got it from them and it had been around there for some time before she bought it, and they are still in business,” said... Sure enough, from the winter cuttings came lush, healthy, bushy potted begonias within 90 days. I don’t know why, but it has been there for years and years. It would a good-size begonia then, and that was in 1958,” Havey explained.
