A humorous light-hearted look at our worst family pictures
I love the website and I had known about that before knowing there was a companion book. So when I saw there was a book too I knew I'd enjoy it.The book takes all the old family photos you remember and displays them with funny and sometimes very apt comments. A very delightful read, and it may bring to mind some of your own less fantastic family portraits. I especially love the ones from teh 1970's. That seems to be the funniest decade to me, and I have some doosies from back then too.Over and above the photos there are humorous anticdoes people have sent in about the funny moments that happened in their families, many I think we can all identify with. The dad who makes an awkward joke, the aunt who always says exactly what is on her mind, or the cheap grandparents who regift presents.I would recommend this book to anyone. The humor is pretty universal and you won't find much offensive. Just poking fun at family photos and our family quirks.

Jennifer Weiner Reviews Awkward Family Photos

Jennifer Weiner was born in 1970 on an army base in Louisiana. She grew up in Connecticut and graduated with a degree in English literature from Princeton University. She is the author of the novels Good In Bed (2001), In Her Shoes (2002), which was turned into a major motion picture starring Cameron Diaz, Toni Collette and Shirley MacLaine; Little Earthquakes (2004), Goodnight Nobody (2005), the short story collection The Guy Not Taken (2006), Certain Girls (2008), the sequel to Good in Bed, and her most recent, Best Friends Forever (2009). Her next book, Fly Away Home, will be published by Atria Books on July 13, 2010. There are more than 11 million copies of her books in print in 36 countries. She can be found on Facebook, on Twitter, and, in real life, in Philadelphia, where she lives with her family. Read her review of Awkward Family Photos:

Samuel Butler once said "Every man’s work, whether it be literature or music or pictures or architecture or anything else, is always a portrait of himself."

If that’s true, than God help Mike Bender and Doug Chernack, who waded into the toxic slurry of bad mullets, spiral perms, skin conditions, leg warmers, wet pants, creepy Moms, funny uncles, and truly disturbing Santas, and came back with this hilarious collection of awkward family photos. Awkward Family Photos reminds anyone with a dusty shoebox full of snapshots of unfortunate fashion choices, band trips, braces, bad bridesmaids’ dresses and that one time you got talked into dressing up and going to the Renaissance Faire, that you are not alone. This isn’t just a book, it’s a public service on the page, a living, breathing, laugh-out-loud reminder that no matter how badly you dressed, how oddly you posed, and how weird Uncle Dave who lived in the basement was, somebody out there had it worse. Particularly the girl on page 77.

What A Hoot!
As you start reading the introduction to this book you'll find yourself chuckling but as you get futher into it you will be laughing out loud to strange looks from your dear hubby or dear children or for that matter anyone within hearing distance. Some of the pictures are just above and beyond hysterical and the captions with them are perfect. I can actually picture myself in some of the circumstances with which the photos had been taken. I'm sure if I went digging through my family photo albums I would find some hilarious moments trapped in motion that will never be forgotten. Oh and I'm sure there will be a few that I wish would be forgotten but good gosh if you can't have a sense of humor and laugh then you're missing out on a major joy in life. This book will give you joy, laughter and a number of looks from those you love or are near to gain there interest. The one thing I suggest is that you have a box of tissues to wipe those tears of laughter and make sure there is a...

Hilarious, but not as funny as the website
It was inevitable that the folks at awkward family photos would convert their popular website into a book. For the most part, it's hilarious. It's more or less just like the website with photo after photo of people of all ages showing off their highly questionable tastes, and then capturing these low moments for eternal posterity. If I had one complaint it would be that the captions seem less creative and biting than those you find on the website. Maybe I'm imagining this, but part of what makes the website so funny is the commentary through the captions, and the book seems to be a little more family friendly.Something new that gets introduced in this print version is the authors letting some of the people in the photos make comments on their own pictures. While this is a good idea in theory, it doesn't really work. The random people make pedestrian comments on their own photos, and the book loses a lot of its humor and charm in the process.Having said that, if...

Even better than Awkward Family Photos, great coffee table book, too
Even the most " humor challenged" people I know can't keep from laughing as they look through this one. We keep a copy on our coffee table and somehow it manages to "migrate" to the night stands in guests' bedrooms or other areas of the house....even if they aren't animal lovers. The book is proof that people CAN be just as smitten with their pets as with any person they know. And the crazy photos attest to that. This is the kind of book that can liven up somber family gatherings or break the ice at parties. The kind of book where you can look at just one page at random - but I dare you to stop after looking at any one page. Impossible. To. Do.Some of the photos (an armful of chihuahuas) are almost too cute for words while others are just too...well...strange.....to seem believable...and also laugh out loud funny. Pity the poor guy whose cat went ballistic during a photo shoot and the picture that documented the whole thing. Or just laugh at him. Maybe he even...

Product Description

The authors of the New York Times bestseller Awkward Family Photos are back with a hilarious tribute to the unbreakable and sometimes uncomfortable bond between people and their pets.

There are few things more rewarding than having a pet. They love us unconditionally, shower us with attention, and because of them, we actually live longer. So, what can possibly be awkward about our animal BFFs? Well . . . nothing. In fact, we’re the awkward ones. We adore our pets, but let’s face it—sometimes L-O-V-E makes us go a little overboard. Like giving them middle names, throwing them elaborate birthday parties, and making them a Christmas sweater to match with the rest of the family. Truth is, what they cherish most is our companionship. And maybe that’s the reason we care about them so much—because for such simple pleasures, they allow us to be as awkward as we want.

Great conversation Starter!
As an animal lover in need on a good laugh, I was pretty sure this book would fit the bill. I wasn't aware that there was a website devoted to this as well as Awkward Family Photos until I got my hands on this eBook.Unfortunately, the eBook was read on my black/white print Kindle, so for a book which consists mostly of photographs, this is not the ideal way to view this book. I was able to flip through the actual book at my local bookstore as well, so that made the book much more fun for me. The book is a quick read, and does include a few brief stories along the way. Many of the photos are totally ridiculous and it made me wonder about the people submitting the photos for consideration -- some are certainly cringe-worthy.There is a section of Holidays and I think these were may favorite --very funny. In addition there is a section of farm animals which were very fun, vacations with people and their pets. Other sections feature, cats, dogs, exotic pets and...

Fun party game that lets you be creative
Someone brought this game to a game meetup here in New York City. I tried it and liked it a lot. Up to six can play and there's a whole bunch of weird pictures on the board and 20 questions. The board is double sided with different pictures on each side. Here's how you play the game. Each player takes a turn as the judge and takes a picture from the pile. A special 20-sided die determines which question on the board you will answer. Everyone except the judge writes an answer in regard to the picture showing. The person whose answer was chosen best by the judge gets to place one of his/her markers on the board. Get three of your markers in a row, or be the first to place all five of your markers on the board and you win.A fun game that's easy to learn and allows for creativity with answers. This game is from All Things Equal, the same people who put out Loaded Questions, The Joke Game, The New Yorker Caption Game and Words of Wiz Dumb. Get this game and spice up...

Good Times for Adults :)
We bought this game for our monthly game night and it was a big hit. At first the rules seemed a little vague in places and the first round people weren't exactly sure what to do when. We quickly figured it out and had a great time making innapropriate (we're all adults) comments relating to the question and photo at hand. I thought it was also really smart to have the game baord be double-sided. It's like getting two games in one, so if you are bored with or played too much with the photos on one side, you can flip it to the other and make fun of those ones. The game is harder to play with people whom you don't know their sense of humor, but it's a good way to learn! I'd recommend this game for college age or older.

Laugh out loud!
Kerry Miller's book Passive-Aggressive Notes, etc. reads hilariously for all ages. My group consists of women in their 80's and we all laughed hysterically at the notes but were a little taken aback by some of the language. No one wanted to put it down. Each person wanted to read something aloud. Well worth the money for a good laugh--or two or three.

A quick way to improve your mood
I read Passive Aggressive Notes on the train home after a long day and went from tired and stressed out to laughing so hard that I shed a tear or two. It's a collection of real notes and photos of the outrageous things people can't find a way to say directly to their roommates and coworkers. Anyone who works in an office, shares an apartment, or dislikes confrontation will so love that this book exists.

The notes in this book are hilarious!
I'm a big fan of the passive-aggressive notes website, and I'm excited to now share these hilarious notes with friends away from the computer, too! As someone who has lived with lots of different roommates and works in an office that witnesses its fair share of passive-aggressive notes, I can definitely relate to a number of the notes in this book. I also bought a copy for my coworker because I knew she'd appreciate it given all of the notes we've seen around our office.

Part voyeuristic entertainment, part group therapy, Passive Aggressive Notes offers a fascinating look at the all-too-familiar frustrations of embattled office drones, apartment dwellers, parents, and pet owners everywhere.

This curated collection combines dozens of outrageous, never-before-seen notes as well as favorites from Passiveaggressivenotes.com a 2008 Webby Award Winner and the official "Best Blog" of the South by Southwest Interactive festival.

A Note from the Author

It all began with a first date...and not a particularly good date, either. Apparently, things between this guy and his roommate had gotten so bad that they now communicated almost exclusively via Post-it note. Ah, yes, I said, I know those notes well--my current apartment (where I lived with three other roommates) had seen its share, most of them about the presence of unwashed dishes in the sink. They were usually signed with love; they were never addressed directly. I should start collecting them, I joked--put them on the Internet or something. Now that would be passive-aggressive.

Later that night--after it became clear that our relationship wasn't going to progress beyond standard small talk--I decided to do just that. And unlike my roommates' approach to dish-washing, the response to passiveaggressivenotes.com was enthusiastic, immediate, and overwhelming. Within weeks of the site's launch, thousands of notes poured in from shared bathrooms, kitchens, cubicles, and parking lots. (Wrote one reader: "Instead of a single note, can I submit an entire person? Like my mother?") This book represents the funniest and most outrageous of those submissions.

Despite the book's title, some of these notes are really more aggressive in tone, and some of them are more passive--polite, even. What they all share a common sense of frustration that's been channeled into written form rather than a direct confrontation. It's barbed criticism disguised as something else--helpful advice, friendly concern, light-hearted humor. But as Dr. Scott Wetzler, a clinical psychologist and author of Living with the Passive-Aggressive Man, observed: "A joke can be the most skillful passive-aggressive act there is."
